A. THE CHANGING GLOBAL LANDSCAPE AND THE
21 ST CENTURY SKILLS FOR TEACHERS

We are in an era of borderless “flat”


world. Barriers have been broken by new
information and communication
technologies.

THE DIFFERENT CHANGES AND
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
To understand the categories, we will attempt to:

• Describe the new learning environment,


• Identify the new learning contents,
• Explain the new processes of learning and how
these will be facilitated,
• Describe the new type of learners, and
• Describe the new type of teachers.
THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

LE has broadened form the confines of the room to


places and spaces that support learning.
Characterized by:
• Learner centered,
• New specs and borderless,
• Enhanced opportunity for creativity and innovations,
and
• Use of ICT.
THE NEW LEARNING CONTENTS

• Integrated/Interdisciplinary;
• Demand driven;
• Emphasis on learning tools on how
to retrieve knowledge; and
• Balance of scientific, technological,
cultural, global and local concepts.
THE NEW PROCESSES OF LEARNING AND
HOW THESE ARE FACILITATED
• Face-to-Face
- learners and teachers are confined in the same
learning space at the same time.
• Distance Learning
- when teaching and learning is mediated by
traditional (modules in print) or modern technology
(online/offline) without the physical of the teacher. It
could be synchronous or asynchronous.
• Blended Modalities
- teaching and learning is facilitated
through face to face and distance learning.

• Experential and Lifelong


- when learners are immersed into
real life situations, learning becomes more
authentic and meaningful.
THE NEW TYPES OF LEARNERS

• Persons who think confidently and critically


and who communicates effectively.
• Self-directed and who questions, reflects and
takes responsibilites for his/her actions.
• Concerned citizen, concerned local affairs.
• Member of the new generation: pop-culture,
different ways of thinking and responding.
LIFE AND CAREER SKILLS
• Flexibility and Adaptability
- learners adapt to various roles, responsibilities
and schedules. Despite the complex condition, they
are able to do the different task at one time.
Recognition is essential to improving the adaptable
and adaptive ability.
• Initiative and Self-direction
- a self-directed learner demonstrate life and
career skills. Goals are set and managed by
themselves.
• Social and Cross-cultural Skills
- require learners to respect cultural differences and
work effectively with others, to be open-minded to
different ideas in order to innovate and improve quality
of work.
• Productivity and Accountability
- learners who possess skills are able to produce
good results. They admire cooperation and teamwork,
collaboration to participate however is to produce
successful performance.
• Leadership and Responsibility
- good leaders are interpersonal and Problem-
solving skills with integrity and ethical behavior to
influence and guide others.
THE NEW TYPE OF TEACHERS

Teachers for the 21st century learners teach


within the context of new environment, new context
of knowledge, and new processes of teaching and
learning.

NEW TYPE OF TEACHERS MUST POSSESS THE FF. CHARACTERISTICS:


• Clear Standards and Accountability
• Use broad pedagogies
• Skillful in the integration of ICT in pedagogy
• Skillful in the use of assessment
• Great understanding of local
and global cultures
• Skillful in action research
• Practice the core values of
inspiring teachers; and
• Develop life career skills for
the 21st century and beyond.
UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and
Cultural Organization)
- is a specified agency of the United Nations.

UNESCO’S Four Pillars of Learning


The Four Pillars of education all started with the two
reports entitled “Learning the Treasure Within” also
known as the Delors Reports (1996) of the International
Commission of Education for the 21st century. It was
published by the UNESCO and learning to be otherwise
known as the Faure report (1972).
Learning To Know

This implies thirst for knowledge and


acquisition of such knowledge.
- an individual who is knowledgeable
is literate.
WHAT IS LITERACY?
- is the ability to identify, understand,
interpret, create, communicate, and compute
using printed and written materials associated
with varying contexts. It involves a continuum
of learning enabling individuals to achieve
their goals and to develop their knowledge.

Putting knowledge and learning into
practice.
Learning to be
Implies developing the potentials of each
individual.
To live Together
Refers to the relationships among
people – Interpersonal skills that will enable
people to live side by side with others.
THE 21 ST CENTURY LITERACIES

The Arts and Creativity


- is the ability to make original ideas that have value
and the ability to see the world in new ways.
Ecological Literacy
- is understanding the principles of ecosystems towards
sustainability.
Cyber Literacy/Digital Literacy
- is the ability to effectively use digital devices for
purposes of communications, expression, collaboration,
and advocacy in knowledge-based society.
Financial Literacy
- is the ability to make informed
judgements and make effective
decisions regarding the use and
management of money.

Media Literacy
- is the ability to access, analyze,
evaluate and create media.
Social/Emotional Literacy
- is the development of social skills,
knowledge and positive values in human
beings to act positively and responsibly
in sophisticated complex social settings.

Globalization and Multi-Cultural Literacy


- is about understanding ethnic groups
that comprise the population and focuses
in complex issues of identity, diversity
and citizenship.
