3 Falling and Turning

Prepared By: Teacher Wafeiah Al-Shabani
Introduction

 What causes the objects to fall down?

 Their weights

 What causes their weight?

 Itis caused by the gravitational field of the
earth, pulling downwards on their mass
 Does the Earth’s gravity change on different
places on Earth’s surface?

 The earth’s gravity is equally strong at all points

close to the earth’s surface, So there is a Uniform
gravitational field close to the earth’s surface
Forces affecting on a
falling parachutist

 At the First Stage

 Weight > air resistance

 So, The resultant force has a positive

value downward

 The speed of the parachutist will

increase (accelerate).
Second Stage

 Air resistance was increasing, since the speed was

increasing, until :

 Air resistance = weight

 So, the resultant force = zero.

 Speed becomes constant (terminal velocity)

Third Stage

 When parachute is opened:

 Air resistance > weight

 So, the resultant force will have a negative value downward.

 Therefore, speed decreases (decelerate).

 Terminal Velocity:

 The greatest speed reached by an object when moving through

fluid.
Forth Stage
 As the speed decreases, air resistance decreases also
until:
 Air resistance = weight

 So, the resultant force = zero.

 Speed becomes constant (New terminal velocity).
