Discussion Guide

Research Objectives

• Validate designs for a touchscreen system that can be used to control devices and appliances in
campervans and motorhomes.
• Understand what information and settings customers would like to see on the “Dashboard” screen.
• Get feedback on the user interface of individual sections within the system.

Your appliances and devices
• Does the campervan have an infotainment system?

Prototype Evaluation (45 min)

Moderator: If available, show an image of the touchscreen control panel with the location of the display inside the
vehicle.

I’d like you to imagine that you just bought a new campervan and that it came equipped with a dedicated
touchscreen display to control devices and appliances. You are now seeing this for the first time and would like to
understand how it works. To guide the discussion, I’ve created a list of short scenarios for you.

Moderator:

• Launch the Figma prototype and give control to the participant.

• Ask participants to complete as many of the following tasks as possible, without assistance.
• After each Scenario, go back to the selection screen before starting the next one.

Scenario Success Criteria Follow-up questions

1. Understand the information on the
Dashboard
You are about to leave for a weekend
trip on your new campervan and you
want to check that you have everything
Participants should spot that:
• Fresh Water tank is at
25%
• Grey Water tank is full
• Battery is below 20%
• What are your initial thoughts about
this screen?
• Is there anything that requires your
attention?
• If this was the first screen you saw
every time you used the system,
what would you like to see on it?
you need to stay off-grid for a couple of
days.
Please have a look at the screen and
talk me through what you think it’s telling
you about the state of the campervan.
2. Control the lights
You are sitting in the campervan in the
evening and you would like to:
• Turn off the Cabin light
• Reduce the brightness of the Kitchen
and Living lights under 50%
• Change the colour off all lights to a
warmer shade of yellow.
3. Understand the navigation model
Now that you have changed the settings
for the lights, you want to go back to the
initial “Dashboard” screen.
4. Change water settings
You are about to take a shower in the
campervan but you don’t have much
water left, so you want to:
• Turn on the water pump
• There are notifications or
alerts associated with
some of the sub-sections
Participants can access the
Lights section and change
the settings for the lights as
described.

forth from the Dashboard
screen to the different sub-
sections.

5. Change the temperature
It’s getting cold outside. You would like
to turn on the heating and set the
temperature to 21.5 degrees.
6. Schedule the heating
It’s 7:00 am on Saturday and you are
going out for a walk. You would like the
heating to get to 21 degrees at 9:00 am
just before you come back.
7. Understand the battery settings
You arrived at a camp site with an electric the additional information.

Power modes & Lock screen
You just finished adjusting all your
settings and you would like to turn off the to sleep or to power off the
display to save battery.
Participants should realise
that clicking on the Power
button activates the Lock
screen, and that they need to
long press in order to turn off
the screen. (Either to send it
system entirely)
