Space Mission Analysis and Design
SMAD:
 this processes / procedures which begins with one or more objective and
constraints to define space system by lowest possible cost.

 Broad objective and constraints are the key to this process.

 We must get the most performance for the moony spent and must require of
system only what it can reasonably achieve.

 We must be understanding mission to achieve this objectives like

communication, navigation, Observation and remote sensing, etc.

 Evaluate the mission :
 In the Case of fireSat, key mission evaluation questions are:

o Which FireSat requirement dominates the system design or is the

most difficult or expensive to meet ?

o How well can FireSat detect and monitor forest fires, and at what
cost?

o What is the mission evaluation processes and which alternatives

should we follow it ?
Space Mission Process
 Evaluate the mission :
 Identify Critical requirements:
o Critical requirements dominate the mission’s overall design, and
therefore most strongly affect performance and cost.

 Common Critical Requirements are:

 Coverage

 Resolution

 Sensitivity

 On-orbit Lifetime
Space Mission Process
 Evaluate the mission :
 Evaluate mission Utility :

o Mission Utility Analysis quantifies (determine) mission performance

as a function of design, cost, risk, and schedule.

o two types of quantities are involved:

 Performance Parameters. (How well the system works)

 Measures of Effectiveness (MoE). (How well the system meets the mission
objective)
Space Mission Process
 Examples of FireSat Performance Parameters are

 Instantaneous maximum area coverage rate.

 Orbit average area coverage rate.

 Mean time between observations.

 Ground position knowledge.

 System response time.

 Examples of FireSat Measures of Effectiveness.

 Fire Detection

 Prompt Knowledge

 Save Reduce Costs

Space Mission Process
 Evaluate the mission :
 Define Mission Concepts (base line):
o The selection of a baseline concept for the mission involves top-
level trade-offs.

 Technical issues of importance to concept selection are:

 Does the proposed system meet the overall mission objectives?

 Is it technically feasible?

 Is the level of risk acceptable?

 Are the schedule and budget within the established constraints?

Space Mission Process
 Evaluate the mission :

 Define Mission Concepts (base line):

 Non-Technical issues of importance to concept selection are:

 Does the proposed system meet the political objectives?

 Does the mission support the infrastructure in place?
