MAE 2600 (SP2012) Quiz #18 Solutions

Q18A. The hook moves from rest with an acceleration of 20 ft/s2. If it is attached to a cord
which is wound around the drum, determine the angular velocity and angular acceleration
of the drum when the hook moved 40 ft down.

at =  r  20 = (2)
  = 10 rad/s2 Ans.

s = 40 ft
s =  r   = s/r = 40/2 = 20 rad

2 = o2 + 2 c ( - o)
2 = 0 + 2(10)(20 - 0)
  = 20 rad/s Ans.

Q18B. If gear A starts from rest and has an angular acceleration of A = (2t + 1) rad/s2,
where t is in seconds, determine the angular velocity of gear B when t = 5 s.

 = d/dt  d =  dt

d = (2t + 1)dt
A = t + t
2

At t = 5 s,
A = (5)2 + 5 = 30 rad/s

 A rA =  B rB
(30)(25) = B(100)
 B = 7.5 rad/s Ans.
