Jeepney
The iconic jeepney is a true testament to Filipino ingenuity. In fact, it’s one of those
images that the country is identified with. The jeepney as public transport is unique to
the Philippines. It is a proudly Pinoy creation. Considering its history, it has also become
a reflection of the Filipino spirit — resilient, innovative, and optimistic.
I believe that this is one of the useful inventions of the country because it provides
affordable transportation options for the public. Whenever students go to school,
workers go to their offices and family on a vacation. It has been part of the life of many
Filipinos every day. With just a little fare, people come and go from places to places.
Liter of Light Project
In a country where 40% of the population lives off less than $2 a day, the rising cost of
power leaves many unable to afford electricity. Some use candles as a light source, but
when generations of family members share a small, dark space in shanty towns,
accidental and destructive fires are often the result.
For that reason, I believe that the Liter of Light project is one of the useful inventions in
the Philippines. The Liter of Light project was launched by My Shelter Foundation, a
Philippines-based NGO which aims to provide light to 1 million of the roughly 12 million
homes who are either still without light or live on the threshold of having their
electricity shut down.

REFLECTION
After reading this module, I learned that science and technology embarks on
change in our society. It changes our lives from being nothing into becoming
something. Imagine how life is different from having no light into having these lamps
and bulbs we have at home. It really paves the way for the development of more
advanced technology for all the sectors in our economy. Even in education, science and
technology programs are one of the priorities of our country. A lot of institutions and
organizations within the country support, fund and provide a good opportunity for those
in the field of science. I am so happy and grateful because this module brings me back
to one of my favorite memories. I was one of those who experienced how great the
program of science and technology was.
When I was in Junior High School, I was a Special Science Student. Through this
program, I was able to enhance my skills and be empowered to make changes in our
economy. I can still remember how we spend our lunch breaks memorizing the
scientists, their inventions and how their inventions were innovated by the innovators.
When we were in grade seven or the first year of being an SSC student, we learned the
importance of alternatives that are environmentally friendly but can make a big
difference in the community. I remember making a tomato sauce ketchup for our
science subject because I and my classmates were tasked to make a product with a
touch of biotechnology. The program provides an experience for every individual to
become greater. Later on, we conducted our individual research and this gives me the
chance to really appreciate and apply the things that I have learned for the past years
in the program. I conducted my research about the effectiveness of carbonized banana
peelings as an alternative control for termites. One of the best things that this program
taught me is writing a research paper. I was able to know how to compute the statistics
results of my study, discuss the results and make recommendations that will benefit
future researchers and leaners of the program. When I reached Senior High School, I
still chose to enroll in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics which gives
me more opportunity as a student, researcher and individual. It taught me to become a
competitive learner in a good way who is confident to help make change in the society
even just in sharing the things that I have learned. Now, I enrolled in another field but I
am so grateful because the things that I have learned in the program really changed
not just my perceptions but also my whole life. I am now helping my mother in her
research editing and I was able to help other people since the research paper became
mandatory to everyone. That is why I agree with what the module has said that science
and technology lead us to a more comfortable and advanced life. Lastly, an article once
said “Science and Technology prepare the whole country and its people to meet the
demands of a technologically driven world and capacitate the people to live in a world
driven by science.”
