Environmental Justice (EJ) is a concept which is primarily

interested in the fair dissemination of environmental quality and

burdens among distinct communities and social classes. It

2

acknowledges that communities which are disadvantaged, such as

communities of different race and color as well as poverty

stricken communities, are inordinately affected by environmental

threats, furthermore, are frequently precluded from the decision-

making processes that causes an impact in their healthiness and

well-being (Mitchell, 2018). EJ advocates argue that all

populations in general regardless of ethnicity, race, and socio-

economic status (SES) have the right to have and live in a

healthy and safe environment. However, certain researches have

shown that EJ issues are rampantly continuing to persist,

particularly in marginalized communities.

According to Smollin and Lubitow (Environmental Justice and

Interventions to Prevent Environmental Injustice in the United

States, 2019) people of different color, native ethnicity

experiences, and low-income minorities experience a different

level of injurious consequences relevant to their exposure toward

environmental toxins (p.433-440). These environmental hazards can

have a significant impact on the healthiness and well-being of

the people in the community, it may be especially true to those

who lack the political power or resources in order to resist or

reduce their effect.

3

The study notes that there may be an underlying political and

socio-economic barrier that may impede the progress of addressing

environmental inequalities, such may be the resistance of the big

corporations that highly contribute toward the pollution in our

environment and those who lack the political will to advocate or

contribute in addressing the environmental issues.

The researchers are focused on this topic to fill the gaps of the

preceding research and studies made, to provide useful and

insightful knowledge as well as reliable justification of facts

and credible data to future researchers. Furthermore, the

researchers aim to ascertain the moderating effect of Political

Ideology and Socio-economic Status on the relationship between

Awareness of Environmental Issues and Attitudes Toward

Environmental Justice among residents in Angeles City; whether

the political or economic status of a person has a corresponding

effect on relation to an individual’s belief system; an influence

in their perception towards the role of perceived environmental

justice; and what are the factors that may cause the influence.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the moderating effect of

Political Ideology and Socio-economic Status on the relationship

between Awareness of Environmental Issues and Attitudes Toward

Environmental Justice among residents in Angeles City.
