the nano world!
Easy-care, miniature aquascapes that are a true
delight to behold.
Our Nano Cubes, like all our Nano products, have
been designed especially to provide an ideal habitat
in which invertebrates and plants can co-exist in
very small volumes of water, with a minimum of
care. As long as a few simple basic rules are observed,
things are sure to go "swimmingly". See for your-
self ...

The Nano Cube Complete PLUS set, available in

10 l, 20 l, 30 l and 60 l variants, contains every-
thing you need.

3
Set-up in 7 steps
The right location
Choose a relatively dark spot – in a corner, for example. Direct sunlight
should be avoided – it may lead to algae formation and overheating.
Before you begin, rinse the aquarium out with warm tap water (no deter-
gents). The black decorative foil provided can be stuck onto the back of the
Nano Cube. Now place the aquarium with the safety underlay on a smooth,
horizontal surface of adequate load-bearing capacity.

1 Pour in DeponitMix special

nutrient medium
Nano DeponitMix provides the foundation for lush
plant growth. It supplies aquarium plants with vital
nutrients through the roots.
Nano DeponitMix has been developed specifically
for the sensitive situation regarding nutrients in
mini-aquaria. It forms the bottom bed layer, of
approx. 2 cm in height.

Wash and pour

2 in Shrimps Gravel Bed
Cover the nutrient medium with a roughly 3 cm
layer of thoroughly washed Shrimps Gravel Bed. In
addition to its attractive appearance, this fine gravel
also prevents food residues from disappearing bet-
ween the grains of gravel and contaminating the
water unnecessarily. Available in the natural-look
colours Sulawesi black and Borneo brown.

Position decorative items

3 Stones, roots or special decorative elements
can be used to decorate the aquarium. Ensure
that the stones are suitable for aquaria: They should
be water-neutral and must not release any undesi-
red substances such as lime or dangerous heavy
metals. Use only special aquarium root wood. Fresh
wood is unsuitable, as it will rot.
Crayfish and shrimps require adequate hiding places
and retreats, particularly during moulting.
The ideal solution: Dennerle Crusta Tubes or Cru-
sta Cave.

4
4 Fill aquarium 2/3 full
Fill the aquarium two-thirds full with tap
water at a temperature of around 20 °C. To avoid
swirling up the bed, place a flat plate in the aquarium
and pour the water in slowly over this plate.
Add Nano Water Conditioner to the tap water be-
forehand (2 drops per l of fresh water), in order to
neutralise dangerous constituents such as chlorine
and heavy metals.

Place plants in the

5 aquarium
Now place the well watered aquarium plants in the
aquarium (see also page 21: Watering plants).
Around 80% of the bed should be covered with
plants at the beginning.
Fast-growing stem plants should make up some of
the stock – algae will then have virtually no chance
from the outset.

6 Install filter and top up

water until aquarium is full
Place the compact Nano corner filter in one of the
rear corners of the aquarium. Against the black
background and behind a few stem plants it will
later be almost invisible.
Now fill the aquarium completely full.

7 Fit lighting and cover

panel
Now fit the attachable Nano Light. The aquarium
should be used with the cover panel fitted at all
times. The panel prevents shrimps from jumping
out of the aquarium and reduces water evaporation.

The aquarium is now set up. Now switch on the filter

and lighting. A little patience is now required be-
fore the first creatures are placed in the aquarium.

5
The run-in phase
After setting up the aquarium it should be run for at least 1-2 weeks without
animal life. The bacteria responsible for degrading harmful substances first
need to become established in sufficient number, so as to ensure an ade-
quate biological balance. You can speed up the sensitive running-in phase
and ensure more reliable results by adding specially cultivated bacteria on
the very first day, such as Dennerle FB7 BiActive ClearWater FilterBacteria.

Tip: Adding a small quantity of food each day, such as 1-2

crushed CrustaGran feed pearls per 10 l of water, will promote
multiplication of the filter bacteria.
After 7 days at the earliest, the first shrimps can be introduced into
their new habitat. Recommended initial stock: 5 shrimps/10 l water.
After around 4 weeks, an effective bacterial fauna will have formed –
this ends the running-in phase.

Changing the water is like a refreshing rainshower
for your aquarium
In nature, waste and harmful substances are continually transported away
by the flowing water, while rain replenishes the natural habitat with fresh
water. Undesired substances are removed from aquaria by regularly repla-
cing 25-50% of the water on a weekly basis. Changing the water regularly
is the most important pre-requisite for keeping shrimps healthy and ensu-
ring lush plant growth. It also prevents
problems with algae.

Shrimps are highly sensitive to conta-

minants. Nano Water Conditioner
makes tap water safe for mini aquaria
by neutralising
aggressive chlorine and dangerous
heavy metals immediately.

7
The right filtration & lighting
Efficient filtration for clear and healthy water

The movement of water in an aquarium should be slow but steady.

With regard to the filter flow rate, this means that the golden rule is “as
In aquaria containing plenty of plants and only a small number of crea-
tures, the plants will produce enough oxygen for the animals in the
aquarium. The less plants and the more animals there are in an aqua-
rium, the more additional oxygen should be introduced via movement
of the water surface.

The flow rate through the Nano corner filter

is infinitely adjustable. The filter outlet can be
turned by 90°. Despite a maximum pump
delivery rate of 150 l/h, the filter is pleasantly
quiet and energy-saving – with a power consumption of
only 2 W. The close-meshed intake openings ensure that
the Nano corner filter is safe for shrimp and crayfish
larvae.

Easy cleaning of the filterelements:

Remove filter elements and wash out
carefully - ideally in a clean bucket
containing aquarium water, so as to
avoid harming the important filtering
bacteria.

Nano Light lets the sunshine in
The fully adjustable attachable Nano Light supplies the vital energy that en-
ables the plants to develop into a fascinating underwater jungle.

The integrated, energy-saving compact fluorescent lamp Nano Amazon

Day bathes plants and shrimps in fresh, vivid light, just like on a fine sum-
mer’s day. Excellent colour rendition ensures that all life in the aquarium is
revealed in the full glory of its natural colours.
The daily lighting time should be 9-12 hours.

Plants love a midday break – algae don’t

While the lighting is on, the plants’ metabolism is in full swing. Light
means “work” for plants. Consequently, they are grateful for a “midday
break”. This gives them an opportunity to recuperate and to break down
harmful metabolic products.
The following lighting rhythm has proven effective:
• 4-5 hours of light in the morning
• Then a break of 2-4 hours without light
• Followed by 5 to 7 hours of light
A time switch provides the simplest means of controlling lighting times.

The integrated mirror-finish reflector provides

for 100% more light output than conventional
lights without a reflector.

Shrimps & co.
Invertebrates in fresh water aquaria
Over the course of the earth’s evolution, invertebrates have evolved to an
amazing level of diversity. Their fascination stems from their bizarre forms,
fantastic colours or markings and their interesting behaviour. Invertebrates
are thus becoming an increasingly popular choice among aquarium enthu-
siasts. Their often small size makes them ideal for nano aquaria.

Shrimps
The popular fresh water shrimps belong to the fa-
mily of ten-legged crabs (decapods) which also in-
cludes crabs and shrimps in fresh water and sea
water. Many shrimp varieties are excellent algae-
eaters and are thus able to keep many an aqua-
rium free of algae problems on a lasting basis.
Shrimps actually first came to prominence by vir-
tue of this capacity for devouring algae. The fa-
mous Japanese aquarium photographer Takashi
Amano always used large numbers of Caridina
multidentata (formerly japonica) to keep his
renowned aquascapes clean.

Caridina multidentata

10
Required habitat in the aquarium
These lively little invertebrates are highly robust animals which flourish when
kept in the right conditions, much to the delight of the nano aquarium en-
thusiast. The adults measure 3 cm on average.
Most shrimp varieties have a relatively large tolerance range with regard to
water values. A good supply of oxygen is particularly important. If the oxy-
gen level drops too low, this will have an adverse effect on their health.

Many varieties thrive at a room temperature of 20-22 °C. Tropical varieties

prefer slightly warmer temperatures, in some instances up to 28 °C. In this
case an additional heater is necessary, such as the Nano adjustable heater.
Shrimps will become inactive if the water is too cold.

Plenty of hiding places, such as densely planted, shaded areas, foliage, and
above all cave-like retreats, are of great importance to their well-being.
Shrimps are gregarious animals. Many of the most popular shrimp varieties
reproduce regularly in the aquarium – e.g. members of the attractive bee
shrimp family, Caridina cf. cantonensis, and first and foremost the well-
known “Crystal Red” variety.
We thus recommend limiting the initial stock to 5 shrimps per 10 l of water.

The larvae of certain varieties grow up in the sea. These need salt water to
develop. Breeding these varieties in an aquarium is considerably more diffi-
cult, and in some cases impossible. The best known example here is the
“Amano shrimp”, Caridina multidentata.

catching shrimps or

aquaria.
Bee shrimps come in diverse colours.
Habitat & diet
Feeding
Shrimps are generally omnivores, with a
special preference for vegetable-based
foods. In addition to algae, their natural
diet also includes animal plankton, detritus
(dead vegetable matter, rotting foliage,
etc.) and even carrion.
These natural sources of nutrition are usu-
ally lacking in an aquarium. A high-quality
shrimp feed such as Dennerle CrustaGran
provides an effective nutritional basis here. Different types of frozen feed
(midge larvae, artemia), Dennerle Algae Wafers, fresh vegetables (spinach,
courgettes), Dennerle Catappa Leaves or herbs (stinging nettles) should be
added to the diet on a regular basis as supplements and to provide a touch
of variety.
CrustaGran is a sinking special feed tailored to the needs of fresh water
shrimps and dwarf crayfish.
CrustaGran contains high-quality proteins from aquatic animals and a high
percentage (20%) of valuable algae – Chlorella, Dunaliella, Ascophyllum and
10% Spirulina – for balanced growth and problem-free moulting.
Vital vitamins provide for vitality and strengthen resistance to diseases. Na-
tural carotenoids and astaxanthin help to bring out shrimps’ natural colou-
ring in all its glory, particularly in yellow-, orange- and red-coloured varieties.
CrustaGran retains its form in water for up to 24 hours.
This avoids unnecessary contamination and clouding of the water.

Moulting
Like all crustaceans, shrimps continue to grow throughout their lives. They
thus moult at regular intervals, in order to discard their old shells which have
become too small for them. As the body is very soft and extremely vulnerable
during moulting, they withdraw to the safety of a hideout. After a few days
the new shell has hardened and the shrimps return to their normal lives.

Dennerle Crusta-Fit supplies all shrimps, crayfish, etc.

with vital vitamins, trace elements and other vital sub-
stances. Dennerle has developed Crusta Care Complex
to create ideal conditions for radiant colours and optimum
protection during the moulting phase.

providing a valuable supplementary source of nutrition. No
shrimp aquarium should be without them.

13
Well-known and popular shrimp
varieties
“Crystal Red” bee shrimp
Caridina cf. cantonensis „Crystal Red“
The “Crystal Red” is the acknowledged king
of the dwarf shrimps, its brilliant red shell ad-
ding a striking and attractive dash of colour
to any nano aquarium.

Tiger shrimp
Caridina cf. cantonensis „Tiger“
The “Blue Tigers” are among the most popu-
lar members of this highly colourful shrimp
variety. The unusual blue colouring lends
them a particularly bizarre appearance.

Bumble Bee Shrimp

Caridina breviata „Hummel“
The Bumble Bee Shrimp is easily confused
with the Bee Shrimp, but it lacks the latter’s
orange colouring. An extremely gregarious
shrimp variety.

White Pearl Shrimp

Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis „White-Pearl“
The snow-white eggs of this transparent
shrimp variety look like tiny pearls.
While one generation of eggs develops in the
belly, the next generation is already evolving
in the neck area (egg spot).

Red Fire, Red Cherry Shrimp

Neocaridina heteropoda „Red“
The Red Fire Shrimp lacks the white component
of the above-stated Crystal Red Bee Shrimp.
The intensive red colouring of this highly fertile
shrimp can be teased out to even greater effect
with carotenoid-rich feed.

14
All the stated shrimp varieties require roughly the same habitat conditions:
• Temperature: 18-26 °C, ideally 20-23 °C
• pH: 6.5-8
• KH: 3-12 °d
• Aquarium size: At least 10 l

Fire Shrimp,
Caridina spec.
The fire shrimp is considered one of the most attractive fresh water shrimps be-
longing to the Caridina genus. The fire shrimp has only recently been discovered.
It lives in Lake Matano on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. As a rock dweller it
spends most of its life between and under the rocks.
The lake has a high water quality, clear and with low nutrient content. The water
values do not fluctuate to any substantial degree.

Required habitat conditions:

• Temperature: 27-29 °C
• pH: 7,4-8
• KH: 7-9 °d
• Aquarium size: At least 10

Acclimatising shrimps
Shrimps react very sensitively to extreme or sudden changes in water values,
Dennerle thus recommends the following procedure in order to acclimatise
shrimps gently to their new habitat:
• Transfer the shrimps together with the water from the transport bag to a
large, clean bucket. Caution: Some shrimp varieties are good jumpers –
for safety’s sake, cover the bucket with a cloth.
• Add ¼ litre of the aquarium water every 10-15 minutes over approx.
2 hours or allow the water to drip into the aquarium via an air hose.
• The ratio of old water to aquarium water should be around 1:3.
• After acclimatising the shrimps in this way, carefully transfer them to the
aquarium with a net.

15
Crayfish
Dwarf crayfish
Crayfish are also fascinating creatures in an aquarium. Most varieties grow
to a considerable size, however, and require an appropriately large habitat.
Dwarf crayfish of the Cambarellus genus are ideal for nano aquaria. Mea-
suring 3-5 cm, they are also suitable for keeping in mini aquaria of 20 l or
larger.
Important: Crayfish are great “escape artists”. They are able to survive in
air for some time and are excellent climbers. An aquarium containing crabs
or crayfish thus needs to be “escape-proof”.
In order to establish a habitat tailored to the needs of these crayfish, the
aquarium needs to be well structured with roots, stones, a couple of Nano
Catappa Leaves and plenty of hideaways.
As dwarf crayfish are not interested in destroying plants, any aquarium
greenery of your choice is appropriate.
Similarly to dwarf shrimps, dwarf crayfish are quite tolerant with regard to
water values. Severe and sudden fluctuations should be avoided, however.
In contrast to most varieties belonging to this group of animals, dwarf cray-
fish are active during the daytime. This provides plenty of opportunity to
observe their interesting behaviour.
A varied, high-quality diet and regular feeding with Crusta-Fit will provide
for healthy crayfish full of vitality whose active behaviour brings plenty of
life to the nano waterworld.

Popular varieties
Orange dwarf crayfish (CPO)
Cambarellus patzcuarensis „orange“
The brown-coloured original of this
colourful breed originates from the
highlands of Mexico. Legend has it
that the orange variety was first bred
by a Dutchman to immortalise his
country’s national colour.

Cajun dwarf crayfish

Cambarellus shufeldtii
Cambarellus shufeldtii is a small, reddish-brown
to grey crayfish with dark stripes running along
its body or an irregular pattern of spots.
While it may be less striking than its colourful re-
lative, it is certainly no less interesting.

Required habitat conditions:

• Temperature: 18-24 °C
• pH: 7-8,5
• KH: 6-12 °d
• Aquarium size: min. 20 l

Crayfish also need to rid themselves of their shells as they outgrow them.
Dennerle Crusta Tubes offer useful retreats here.
17
Nano fish
Keeping fish in a Nano Cube requires special care and is thus recommen-
ded first and foremost for experienced aquarium enthusiasts.

The most important rules

• Do not keep fish in aquaria with a volume of less than 30 litres.
• Never crowd too many fish into an aquarium.
• Restrict yourself to several specimens of just one or two varieties.
• Changing part of the water on a weekly basis is crucial here.
• Never give the fish more feed than they are able to eat immediately.

An important selection criterion for the stock of fish is their size and
dimensions. Their length when fully grown should not exceed 4 cm,
whereby slender varieties are to be preferred.
A chubby platy is not suitable, for example. The following stocking rule
applies:
30 l Cube - Stock with fish of a combined length of no more than
25 cm (approx. 5-10 fish)
60 l Cube - Stock with fish of a combined length of no more than
50 cm (approx. 10-20 fish)

Snails
Fresh water snails make their appearance in every aquarium sooner or
later, sometimes becoming a real nuisance.
Recently, however, these former “undesirables” have found their own
place in some aquarium enthusiasts’ hearts. Some varieties are highly
interesting and also useful helpers in our aquaria.

Popular varieties
Assassin snail
Anentome helena
Anentome helena is an undemanding
fresh water snail with a strange taste in
food – it likes nothing better than to de-
vour other snails! A highly effective and at-
tractive helper in the aquarium when small
snails make a nuisance of themselves.

Zebra nerite snail

Vittina coromandeliana
The zebra nerite snail displays a great va-
riety of different markings on its shell. It
feeds primarily on food residues and
algae, but is not interested in plants. This
aversion to plants makes it a welcome
guest in the aquarium.

20
Plants – the key to maintaining
a biological balance
Plants provide much more than just decoration. They act as an ecolo-
gical counterbalance to the animals. Only with plants does an aqua-
rium become a living eco-system. Because of feeding, nutrients are
constantly being introduced into the aquarium – and it is the plants
that remove them again afterwards. As such, plants are the crucial key
to a perfectly functioning aquarium.
And plants can do even more than this:
• They produce vital oxygen
• The provide a safe hiding place and reduce stress
• They remove contaminants from the water
• They even repel germs
• They remove algae nutrients from the water

Preparing plants for nano aquaria

Shrimps are highly sensitive to certain contaminants. As the possibility of
newly purchased aquarium plants releasing substances that may be harm-
ful to shrimps (pesticides, fertilizer residues) cannot be ruled out, plants
should always be watered for at least three days before placing them in the
aquarium:
• Potted plants: Remove the growing medium, cut back the roots to ap-
prox. 2 cm
• Put the plants in a bucket with tap water at a temperature of 15-20 °C at
room temperature in a position offering plenty of light (near a window)
• Change the water daily

Valuable grazing ground
for shrimps: mosses
Mosses are a must in every shrimp aquarium. Numerous microorganisms
and algae settle on their fine pinnate leaves, providing vital supplementary
nutrition.
Shrimps love scouring the surfaces of the leaves for anything edible.
All types of moss thrive in a temperature range from 20 to 28 °C. 22 – 24
°C is the ideal range. Their minimal light requirements also make them par-
ticularly suitable for nano aquaria.

Plant care
Aquarium plants want to be fed
Plants are crucial to maintaining the biological balance in the aquarium. It
is thus important to ensure good plant growth at all times, so that they are
able to perform their important functions.
For healthy growth, every plant requires a defined amount of different nu-
trients. The absence of only one element will result in poor plant growth
and pale, yellow or glassy leaves.

Dennerle Nano Daily Fertilizer is tailored specifically to the sensitive nu-

trient situation in mini aquaria. It supplies all plants with the nutrients they
need on a daily basis. Valuable trace elements such as iron and manganese
provide for rich green leaves. Red and reddish-brown leaf colours are in-
tensified, while attractive leaf markings are enhanced.

Magnificent nano aquascapes with CO2
Plants consist of almost 50% carbon. Thus CO2 – carbon dioxide – is the
most important plant nutrient there is.
Aquarium water is nearly always deficient in CO2. Slow-growing, unde-
manding plants get by without an additional supply of CO2. Fast-growing
and more demanding plants require additional CO2 fertilization for strong
and healthy growth, however.

Dennerle is able to provide the right CO2 system for mini-aquaria, too, in
the guise of the
Nano CO2
complete set.
For particularly lush
aquascapes.

Even the most minimal CO2 quantities of just a

few bubbles per minute can be set with preci-
sion with the Nano pressure reducer.
