Lecture #1- (MMW)- Patterns and Numbers in nature

Patterns are regular, repeated or recurring forms of design.

Example:

What is the next face/square in the sequence?

Number: 1. What number comes next in: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, ___,____.
2. “ “ “ “ in: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ___, ___
3. “ letter “ ‘ in: A, C, E, G, I, ____, ___
4. “ number “ “ in: 15, 10, 14, 10, 13, 10, ___,__

Different kinds of Sequences:

Sequence function can be finite or infinite depending on whether the
domain is finite or infinite. A finite sequence function is a function whose
domain is a set in the form {1,2,3,4,....n} while an infinite sequence function
has a set of all positive integers as its domain.
Example:
1. f(n) = 2n- 5 , where n = +Z ( +Z -means positive integers)
n= {1,2,3,4} f(n) ={______}
2. f(n) = n/ (n+1); where n= +Z such that n= {1,2,3,4,5}

Arithmetic Sequence
A sequence a1 is the first term of the sequence a n is the last term
and d is the common difference S is the sum of all terms in the given
sequence.
Example: In the given arithmetic sequences determine the indicated
value/s
