Welcome to Mérida
Merida is the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, and the largest city in
southeastern Mexico, the city´s rich culture heritage is a product of the syncretism
of the Maya and Spanish cultures during the colonial era.
It was the first city to be over named American Capital of Culture and is the only
city that has received the title twice.
The cathedral of Merida, was built in the late 16th century with stones from nearby
Maya ruins, and is known to be the old cathedral in the mainland Americas, In
addition, the city has the third largest old district on the continent.
Merida is often considered the safest city of Mexico and one of the safest cities in
the Americas, the city was certified as an International Safe Community by the
Karolinska Institute of Sweden for its high level of public security. Forbes
Magazine has ranked Merida three times as one of the three best cities in Mexico
to live invest and do business.
Merida began to be nicknamed as “la ciudad blanca”, it was believed that this
nickname was given due to the white color of the limestone used to paint the walls
and the city´s colonial building.

What kind of clothes should I wear?

Merida´s climate is hot and its humidity is moderate to high, depending on the time
of year. The average annual high temperature is 35 degrees, However, in may,
temperatures often rise above 39 degrees in the afternoon, it´s most often a few
degrees hotter in Merida, than in coastal aereas due to its inland location and low
elevation.
