3. What restrictions or conditions are imposed on stream function 𝛹 so that it exactly satisfies the two-

dimensional imcompressible continuity equation by definition? _______ ___________

4. What is the significant about curves of constant stream function? They represent streamlines of a flow.

5. The u velocity component of a steady, two-dimensional, incompressible flow field is u = ax + by,

1. Consider the steady, two-dimensional, incompressible velocity field

Verify that this flow is incompressible? (10 points)

u v w
+ + = 1.8 − 1.8 + 0 = 0
A: x y z
 YES,This flow is incompressible.

2. The rθ-component of t he viscous stress tensor in the cylindrical coordinates is

Some authors write this component instead as

using the product rule to differentiate Eq(1)

− 1 r u 1 ur 1 u u
A:  r =   r =  (ru 2 + + ) =  ( ( r − u ) +  )
r r r r  r  r
 Eq(1) is the same with Eq(2).

distance h, with the top plate moving and the bottom plate stationary as illustrated in Figu4. The flow
is steady, incompressible, and two-dimensional in the xy-plane. The velocity field is given by ⃗V = (u, v)
= (Vy / h)i + 0 j .

convenience, let  = 0 along the bottom wall of the channel. What is the value of c along the top wall?
(b) Calculate the volume flow rate per unit width into the page of Figure 4 from first principles
(integration of the velocity field). Compare your result to that obtained from the stream function.
(c) For the casr in which V=3m/s and h = 3 cm, plot several streamlines using evenly spaced values of
stream function. Are the streamlines themselves equally spaced?
