Ancillary Postures, Actions, Holds and Fundamental Postures

Forward lunge:
- Staggered stance
- Feet hip width apart
- Look forward
- Weight on back leg
- Arms braced
- Shift weight to front leg

Backward lunge:
- Staggered stance
- Feet hip width apart
- Look forward
- Weight on front leg
- Arms braced
- Shift weight to back leg

Oblique pivoted Lunge:


- Start in bench or side lunge with toes
slightly out
- Shift weight onto one leg
- Pivot on the ball of weight bearing foot and
heel of other
- Quarter turn away from weight bearing
foot (turn as a block)
- Finish with back foot flat and pushing back
on heel of front foot

Side Lunge:
- Feet under elbows (with hands on hips)
- Feet pointing out no more than “10 to 2”
o’clock
- Look forward, trunk upright
- Soft knees
- Start with weight on one leg, then
smoothly shift all weight to other leg
- Head stays relatively level as weight shifts

Counter Balance:
- In bench, equal weight on both feet.
- Move trunk back
- Shoulders are behind hips.

Brace:
- Tightening of upper limbs
- Arms against ribs
- Abdominals braced

Bracket:
- Find support by leaning on elbows on a
stable point – knee, hip or table

Bench:
- Feet hip width and almost parallel
- Feet flat on floor / weight evenly dispersed
on feet
- Thighs almost horizontal
- Maintain neutral spine
- Look forward
- Arms braced on the body or on a surface

Weightlifter’s position:
- Feet flat on floor, wider than Bench
position with weight evenly
dispersed on the feet
- Straight arms braced out against inner
thighs
- Bottom slightly higher than knees
- Maintain neutral spine
- Look forward

Saddle Seat:
- Stand in a stride stance, knees soft.
- Transfer weight to rear foot
- Lift unloaded knee up to raise load

Static Saddle:
- Staggered stance, feet hip width apart
- Look forward
- Support object on front thigh

Bow:
- Start with feet apart, weight on one leg.
- Soft hips and knees
- Bracket hand on opposite knee, palm down
- Movement is in a flexion of the elbow and
diagonal pull upwards and across body
while arm rotates into palm up
- End with elbow in a straight line to
opposite toe.

Crossbrace:
- A hold where the upper limbs are crossed
one in relation to the other:
o One hand supine / palm up
o The other hand prone / palm down
- Emphasis that the arms must be crossed at
the beginning of the move
- Effect is a rotation at the beginning of the
move

Step Pivot:
- Look forward
- Knees bent
- Transfer weight to ball of one foot
- Pivot on ball of foot
- Step around with the other foot
- Turn head in direction of move to move as
block

Two feet Pivot:
- Look forward
- Knees bent
- Transfer weight to balls of both feet
- Pivot on balls of both feet
- Turn head in direction of move to move as
block

Knight’s Position:
- Front foot flat on floor (hip and knee at 90
degrees)
- Back toes tucked under, foot towards
midline
- Back hip over knee, so thigh is vertical
- Look forward

Envelop:
- An encircling movement which draws the
object closer as operator’s trunk moves up
and forward, ending up on tiptoe if
necessary (e.g. a short person)

Fold:
- Stablise hip joint as fold point
- Push / pull forward on shoulders / upper
back
- Push hips towards chair
- Lower self with patient

Spoons:
- Cupped palm, thumbs in, fingers together,
neutral wrist
