Cir. Memo. No. 2348/AE2/DEE1/Designs/Bridges/2023, Dt: 07-11-2023
Sub: - PR Designs — Bridges — Certain instructions to be followed during
execution of bridge works — issued — Reg
It is learnt by the undersigned that certain shortfalls are noticed
during the execution of bridges in the state. Hence, the following
instructions are issued to all the Regional Officers, District Panchayat Raj
Engineers & Executive Engineers, PR & V&QC in the state to be followed
during execution of bridge works:
. Confirmation of Foundation strata:
It is essential to reconfirm the properties of soil strata (considered for
designing the bridge foundations) before commencement of the work.
Where ever the foundation is designed to rest on Rock, confirmatory
bores shall invariably be taken at exact Pier & Abutment locations to
ensure the level & type of rock
If there is any change in rock level or its properties considered in the
design, the same shall be brought to the notice of the approval authority for
appropriate revision of foundations before grounding the work.
. Protective works for Raft foundation:
In case where Raft foundation is proposed by restricting the scour,
bed (floor) protection to the structure shall be provided to safe-guard
against scour action and undermining (washing away or disturbance by
piping action etc.). The following precautions shall be taken during
execution of Protective works
+ Longitudinal cut-off walls shall be provided on U/S and D/S side and
their ends shall be connected by cross cut off walls. Longitudinal
cut-off walls safeguard the bridge from scour whereas the cross-cut-
off walls keep the longitudinal cut-off walls in position and also protect
the bridge from scouring
* Cut off walls shall not have structural Continuity or moment
connection with Raft slab, but the joint shall be leak tight.* The work of bed protection shall be executed simultaneously along
with the foundations of the structure to prevent any damage due to
unexpected floods even during the construction stage.
* The performance of rigid flooring and flexible apron shall be kept
under watch, especially on the downstream side, for first few floods
after construction and also after every unprecedented flood. If any
damage/disturbance is noticed, remedial measures shall be taken
immediately duly intimating to the concerned higher authorities.
3. Filling behind Abutments, Wing walls & Return walls:
Back filling:
The extent of backfill to be provided behind the abutment shalll be as
per IRC — 78:2017, Appendix — 6; illustrated in the following figure:

top ofthe Footing
The back fill material shall be granular type having plasticity index &
liquid limit not exceeding 20 & 40 respectively, angle of repose () value
not less than 30°. The filling behind abutment before placing the
superstructure is not desirable.
ii, Filter media:
The material for filter media shall consist of well graded gravel,
coarse sand or stone as per MORTH Specifications. The filter material shall be well packed to a thickness of not less than
600 mm in which, 50% is with stone of size not less than 150mm dia & the
remaining 50% shall be with Class - Ill Well Graded Coarse aggregates as
‘specified in Table 300-3 of MORTH Specification. The smaller size material
shall be towards the soil and bigger size towards the wall and provided
over the entire surface behind abutment, wings or return walls to the full
height for providing drainage.
Weep holes:
‘Adequate number of weep holes of 100mm dia not exceeding 1.0m
spacing staggered in both vertical & horizontal directions shall be provided
to prevent any accumulation of water and building up of hydrostatic
pressure behind the walls. The weep holes shall be provided above the low
water level.
4, Approach slabs:
The approach slabs have to be provided on either side of bridge
portion beyond abutments. One end of the approach slab shall be rested
on the backing wall of abutment. The slab shall cover the full width of
carriage way and shall extend for a length not less than 3.50m into the
approach.
* To avoid settling of approach slab, it shall be laid over PCC bed
on well compacted back filled soil
«Earth retaining structures in approaches shall be finalized before
execution of Abutments invariably.
All the Regional Officers, PR are requested to ensure proper
implementation of the above said instructions in order to maintain standards in
construction of bridges.
