1. “Indian National Congress always claimed to be representative of all the
segments of Indian society”
Keeping in view of this statement, critically evaluate the emergence of All India Muslim
League as a counterforce. Justify your answer with five valid points.

2. What socio-political contributions of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan made him a ‘saviour’ of
the Muslims of Sub-continent amid British Raj? Explain your answer with five
relevant points.

Question 1
Solution:
1. All India Muslim League (AIML) was founded in 1906, in Dhaka to protect the rights
of the Muslims of the subcontinent, before the emergence of AIML Indian National
Congress, claimed itself to be the only representative of the people of the
subcontinent.
2. At the emergence of All India Muslim League its purpose was to secure the right of
the Muslims of the subcontinent, but later on changes occurred in the goals of Muslim
League.
 Self government under the British Crown keeping in view the peculiar
conditions in India.
 Good relations with other communities’ cooperation with any party working
for similar goals.
This step brought M.L and congress closer but it proved no fruit.
On address to the Muslim League session in Allahabad, December 1930 Allama Iqbal
addressed:
I would like to see the Punjab, NWFP, Sindh, Balochistan
amalgamated into a single state as a self government
within the British empire or without. This is the final
destiny of the Muslims of N.W. India.
3. Party was only securing the needs of the Hindus only. This was an erroneous idea
since Congress always meant to include every community of the country and had
many Muslim leaders as members, but they protected only the rights of the Hindus.
4. The AIML was essentially a party of educated elite class Muslims, at the beginning.
It’s purpose was to be the legal representative of the muslims of the subcontinent and
demand there basic rights. The party’s chief aim was to promote and secure civil
rights for Muslims. It espoused loyalty to the British government as a means to
achieve more political and civil rights.
5. The struggle for the partition of British India into separate Hindu Muslim majority
states, and after the formation of Pakistan in 1947 the league became Pakistan
dominant political party.

Solution:
1. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan played an important role for the muslims of the subcontinent.
After the war of Independence was over muslims were blamed for this. And on the
other hand muslims were not accepting any other ruling force on them as they were
the ruler. Muslims were thrown in backwardness.
2. After the War of Independence 1857, hindus participated with the british and learnt
there culture and language and were given jobs across the subcontinent and muslims
on the hands were deprived of the jobs due to lack of knowledge. The economic
condition of the muslims of the subcontinent came more worser.
At that time Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, played a remarkable to get muslims of the
subcontinent educated, He established different instutions which served the purpose
of making british british culture available to the people of the subcontinent, he also
wrote urdu version of many english famous.
3. He gathered Muslims when they were broken into pieces and eradicated the
misunderstanding between the muslims and the british and make them to accept the
change in the rule, he was great supporter of hindu muslim unity and server for this
purpose but after the hindu-urdu controversy occurred he acknowledged that only the
solution for the muslims of the subcontinent is to demand other state.
4. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was of the broader perspective and played the role of educating
muslims with the modern education so that they can compete with other.
For this purpose he created many educational institutions in which Aligarh University
is one of the most importance.
5. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan also played a role in defining the purposes of All India Muslim
league in which He declared that the only solution that would be acceptable to the
Muslims of the subcontinent is the partition of India so that Muslim majority areas are
given to Muslims.
