General Safety Statement

Your safety and the safety of others is a primary concern to Chief Industries, Inc.
This manual was written to assist in the safe installation of the Tower System.

It is your responsibility as the owner, builder, operator, or supervisor to know

what specific requirements, precautions and hazards exist and to make these
known to all personnel working with equipment or on the jobsite so that they can
take any necessary safety precautions.

All personnel, including the installation crew, must read and understand the
information contained in this manual before starting construction. Chief
Industries, Inc. is not responsible or liable for the misuse of equipment or
operation of personnel or equipment in an unsafe manner.

Chief Industries, Inc. assumes no liability with respect to proper construction and
inspection, assembly, or use of its products established under applicable laws, all
of which is the sole responsibility of the purchaser and those authorized for the
installation.

Follow all local and federal safety laws and regulations. Make certain that all
equipment and personnel conform to any applicable OSHA regulations.

Work Area Safety Statement

To ensure the safety of all individuals in the work area, only authorized and
trained persons shall install, maintain and use the Tower System.

Under no circumstances should unauthorized individuals be allowed to trespass or

be present in the work area.

It shall be the duty of all operators to verify that the work area is clean, organized
and kept free of all debris and tools that might cause an accidental tripping or
falling hazard.

Special care should be taken when working from unsafe heights. Common sense
dictates that when conditions such as rain or wind prohibit the safe use of
equipment, the installation be discontinued.

Chief Industries, Inc. strongly recommends that equipment meeting the current
OSHA / ANSI specifications be used, whether the individual operator is required
by law to do so or not. Properly climbing equipment and secured safety belts
should be used at all times when performing operations work, installation or
maintenance.

Field modifications without the authorization of the manufacturer may present

unknown dangers to the operator and must be avoided.

Before You Begin

 Read the entire installation manual and study the standard detail
drawings supplied with shipment.

Check the packing list for parts received and make sure you have everything listed
before signing off on the packing list or bill of lading. Chief Industries, Inc. must be
contacted within (7) seven days after delivery if there is a shortage of parts.

Unloading: When unloading the truck, layout various components according to the
number identification and accessibility to the construction site. The following
describes the basic order in which the components will be assembled.

1. Stage components for current bay

2. Posts
3. Diagonal Bracing
4. Horizontal Bracing
5. Internal Cross Bracing / Access Bracing
6. Stairs and Platforms
7. Proceed in similar fashion for bay at next elevation

Storage of Materials: All galvanized items should be protected from weather and
moisture condensation to prevent the formation of white rust. Small parts, such
as bolts, nuts, washers, etc., are just as important to an installation as the large
ones. Make certain these are located and checked before disposing of containers
or packing. Ideally, these items should be stored in their shipping containers until
ready for use on the project. They have been packaged to protect against moisture
and each container is identified as to its content. Sheet steel should be stored with
one end low to prevent moisture condensation. Chief Industries, Inc. shall not be
held responsible for materials that are not protected or stored properly after
delivery.

Claims for Shortages or Damaged Parts: All claims for shortages or damaged
parts must be indicated at the time of delivery. An authorized representative of
the contractor must be responsible for checking the material as it is unloaded from
the truck. If material is unloaded at the building site, and the installation is
subcontracted, we recommend that the contractor be informed of his
responsibilities. Signing the packing list is your confirmation of complete
shipment. If delivery is incomplete or damaged you should promptly file a claim
with the delivering carrier. For shortages determined upon receipt of shipment, a
back order will be immediately issued and priority given for earliest possible
delivery. Shortages determined after acceptance of materials will be handled as a
special house order and will be given priority for earliest possible delivery. The
customer will be charged for these materials. If he receives an allowance from
Chief Industries, Inc., his account will be credited. Chief Industries, Inc. liability

in regard to shortages is limited to supplying the missing materials including

freight charges by a commercial carrier. Claims for lost time or completion
penalties will not be honored.
Manpower Requirement Estimate: Please note that the size of crew will vary
depending upon the size and complexity of the project and familiarity with installation
procedures. When appropriate your crew should consist of the following to ensure the
project is completed in the time frame allowed.

1 worker familiar with components and drawings, Ground Level

1 worker to unload and stage parts, Top Level
2 workers installing parts & setting fasteners
1 supervisor

Tool and Equipment Requirement Estimate: Please note that this is a partial list
of the tools and equipment needed for installation. Individual installations may vary.

Appropriately rated crane

Open end wrenches and sockets
Impact wrenches with sockets
Standard drift pins, 9/16” tapered shank

Tips and Shortcuts: The parts are packaged to reduce cost. For the most efficient
construction of the complete project please consider the following:

1. Unbundle and sort all components into stacks of similar parts.

2. Layout all parts as shown in the staging layout and directions in the manual.
3. Chief Industries, Inc. ships a minimal amount of hardware and fasteners.
Collect all dropped fasteners to ensure you have enough to complete the
project.
4. Verify that you use the correct components in each Tower section before
proceeding to the next.

Foundation Considerations
The foundation and anchoring are critical on all tower structures. Variables such
as soil conditions, quality of concrete and reinforcement must be taken into
account when designing and costing your foundation.

Chief Industries Inc. does not design foundations and is not responsible for the
foundation or anchoring of the tower system to a foundation. A qualified and
licensed engineering firm should be consulted to design your foundation to meet
the requirements for your project and the appropriate building codes.

Chief Industries Inc. will provide the design engineer with additional information
related to the structural characteristics of the tower including:

Tower dead load

Compression and uplift per post
Overturning moment at the foundation
Horizontal shear per post

Strength Staging Layout

All tower components such as posts, diagonals and horizontal braces are strength
staged according to six (6) different stages. As a result, each tower component has a
different designation. You must build your tower according to the directions supplied
and stage the components as specified.

A components stage designation determines where that specific component will be

positioned. The higher stage numbers indicate higher strength and will be assembled at
the tower base. The lower stage numbers will be assembled at the tower top. The rest
of the components are assembled in stage numerical order in between. Posts, diagonal
bracing and horizontal bracing are staged separately from each other.

Before you start refer to the staging layout drawing attached with shipment and sort the
tower components according to type and stage, in the order they will be used during
construction.

Shown below is an example of a staging layout. This is an example only – you must
follow the staging layout custom supplied with your order.

Tower Sections
Before starting make sure you have a copy of the packing list, this will assist you in
identifying the correct part numbers required for your system.

All local, state and federal safety regulations and requirements must be strictly
observed and enforced.

Installation is largely a matter of individual choice and experience. The following

general outline is provided for reference only.

Note: Leave all hardware (bolts, nuts, washers) loose until all components in a
single bay have been added. This will allow you to square and plumb each bay and
ensure that tolerances do not accumulate.

Note: Bolt heads are to be installed inside of the Tower bay.

Verify the correct tower type / style by looking at the weld dots located near the
end of the Tower posts.

1. Place tower posts into position. These connections will require (8)
3/4” x 2-1/2” Grade 5 bolts with lock washer and nut for stage 0-3
and (8) 1” x 3-1/2” Grade 8 bolts with lock washer and nut for stage
4-6.

2. Place diagonal bracing into position. Note that diagonal bracing is to

be installed back to back with a spacer plate in between the two
angles.

These connections will require (5) 3/4” x 2-1/2” Grade 5 bolts with
lock washer and nut. On section heights 5’ and smaller these
connections will require (3) 3/4” x 2-1/2” Grade 5 bolts with lock
washer and nut. Bolts used inside the adjustable slot require (2) 3/4”
flat washers, installed one each side of the ear plate. Note: Top
section heights 5’ and smaller do not require a bolt inside the post ear
plate adjustable slot.

Tower bay sections may be assembled at ground level and then lifted into
place with an appropriate capacity crane.

Note: If assembling more than one section at ground level, verify that
internal cross braces are installed. Install temporary bracing for construction
purposes if not provided with shipment. Stacking one section at a time is
recommended.

Before assembly always refer to staging layout. Once the entire tower has
been assembled verify that the top bay has end caps on the tower posts or a
top load beam attached to prevent water moisture from leaking into the
tower and causing damage to the tower system.

Internal Cross Bracing

Internal cross bracing must be installed at 20’ intervals before assembling the next
sections of the tower. This internal bracing will provide lateral stabilization and square
the tower, allowing for easier assembly of the additional stages. If there is an elevator
installed cross bracing must be field fabricated or purchased from Chief Industries Inc.

1. Install internal brace mounting lug to the corresponding holes in the

post end plates. These connections will require (2) 3/4” x 2” Grade
5 bolts with lock washer and nut. Note that these plates will mount
on the underside of the post end plates.

Mounting Lug

2. Bolt the first internal cross brace to the underside of the internal
brace mounting lug. These connections will require (2) 3/4” x 2”
Grade 5 bolts with lock washer and nut.

Internal Brace

3. Bolt the second internal cross brace to the first internal cross brace,
with flanges back to back. Make sure to connect the braces together
at all three bolt locations.
4. Torque bolts to required specifications.

Elevator Leg Bracing

It is recommended that you assemble the elevator leg at the same time as you assemble
the tower bays. Rigidly brace the elevator legs to the corresponding tower column post
end plates every 20’ to laterally stabilize and square the elevator in addition to the
tower.

1. Brace the elevator legs at each of the 4 corners, using a minimum of

2 x 2 x ¼” angle iron.
2. Fabricate and install a collar around the elevator legs, using a
minimum of 2 x 2 x ¼” angle iron.
3. If a leg is centered in the tower bay it is sufficient to use (4) braces.
If the leg is offset or with installations requiring two or more elevator
legs (6) braces are required. You must stabilize your elevator leg so
that it does not rotate or swivel.

Note: If you have any construction problems, additional wind loading or

weight loads that will be added to the tower, contact Chief Industries Inc.
for additional information and bracing requirements.

Access Bracing
Access braces are installed in a tower
whenever equipment is installed through the
tower, or when the diagonal bracing may
interfere with the proper placement of
spouting or other equipment. Access bracing
may also be installed for personnel access to
specific areas of the tower.

Note: Caution should be exercised when

installing access bracing. Only remove
existing bracing on one side of a tower bay
when installing access bracing.

1. Bolt both ends of horizontal access brace. These connections will

require (4) 3/4” x 2” Grade 5 bolts with lock washer and nut.
Bolt one end of both the diagonal bracing pieces to the center ear of
the horizontal access brace. These connections will require (4) 3/4” x
2” Grade 5 bolts with lock washer and nut. Bolts used inside the
adjustable slot require (2) 3/4” flat washers, installed one each side of
the ear plate.
Bolt the other end of the diagonal bracing to the standard post ears
on the tower bay. These connections will require (4) 3/4” x 2” Grade
5 bolts with lock washer and nut. Bolts used inside the adjustable
slot require (2) 3/4” flat washers, installed one each side of the ear
plate.
2. Torque bolts to required specifications.

Note: When installing switchback stair landings / platforms verify the position of
the entry stair section before proceeding with installation of additional landings /
platforms.

The entry stair section must be positioned correctly so that the top stair section
will land directly next to the tower and mount correctly with the top platform.

For example: On even height towers the entry stair section must be installed at
the outer connection on the first switchback landing / platform.
