BROCK® Commercial Grain Bin Roof 48' and 54' [14 630 and 16 459] About This Manual

About This Manual

The intent of this Manual is to help you in two ways. One is to follow step-by-step in
the order of assembly of your Grain Bin Roof. The other way is for easy reference if
you have questions in a particular area.

IMPORTANT! Read ALL instructions carefully, including the Base Manual, before
starting construction. Your Base Manual will be listed on the front cover
of this Manual.
IMPORTANT! Pay particular attention to all SAFETY information in the Base Manual
and on Page 6 of this Manual.
• Metric measurements are shown in millimeters and in square brackets and italic,
unless otherwise specified, and will follow the English measurement. " equals
inches and ’ equals feet in English measurements.
Example: 15' [4 572] 24' [7 315]

• "Horizontal” (—) and “Vertical” (|), “bottom” and “top,” in the instructions refer
to the bin as it is standing.
• Optional equipment contains necessary instructions for assembly or operation.

• Major changes from the last printing will be listed on the back cover of this Manual.

• This Planning Symbol is used in areas where planning needs to take place before
construction continues on your particular installation.

Identification of Parts and Hardware

• Parts and basic components are identifed in Figures and their accompanying
Tables as “Items” with a black number in white circle.
• Hardware (and hardware connections between Parts) are identified with a white
number in a shaded circle. See Figure 2. The Hardware Item number is listed
after the Parts in the Figure Table.
• Dimensions and lengths are noted with a white circle on an arrow or line, then
identified with numeric values in the Figure Table.
• Specific holes, positions, or locations mentioned in the text are noted in the Fig-
ure with an asterisk.
• Very small numbers near an illustration (i.e., 1257-48) are identification of the
graphic, not a Part Number.

Planning Before Your Bin Arrives BROCK® Commercial Grain Bin Roof 48' and 54' [14 630 and 16 459]

Planning Before Your Bin Arrives

Choose The Bin Site

The concrete pad will be the working surface. Keep it clear of material except Sub-
Structure parts.

The Roof Sub-Structure is assembled on the concrete pad. The Compression Ring is
lifted onto the Center Support. Rafters are then lifted and attached to the
Compression Ring and top Body Sheet Ring.

Check Delivery
Your Grain Bin Roof is made up of many parts and checked carefully at the time of shipment.
However, use the packing slip and check your shipment on arrival to be sure it is complete.
IMPORTANT! How to control “Wet Storage Stain” (RUST!) on galvanized Body
Sheets... Do not permit moisture from weather, condensation, or other
sources to remain between Body Sheets. If moisture is present,
separate Body Sheets IMMEDIATELY for good air circulation. Where
possible, store sheets in a warm, dry place. If this is not done, white/red
rust will appear.
Tools and Equipment Needed
7/16 - 1'' [11.1 - 25.5] Box End Wrenches
Adjustable Wrenches up to 1 1/2'' [38] - for use on adjustable expanders
Drill with a 3/8'' [9.5] bit

Impact Wrench and Sockets
Lifting Jacks
Lifting Brackets
Protective gloves and eyewear
Nail aprons are useful for holding a supply of bolts and nuts during assembly.
IMPORTANT! Hard hats must be worn during construction.
IMPORTANT! No Hardware substitutions are permitted unless noted.
IMPORTANT! The number of lifting jacks and brackets required is determined by factors
such as bin size, soil compaction, wind velocity, design of jacks, etc.
A 3/8'' Grade 8.2 Bin Seal Bolt has an approximate safe load of 2,650 lbs. [1 202 kg].
Keep this in mind for the number of Bolts you use to lift Grain Bins during assembly.
A 5/16'' Grade 8.2 Bin Seal Bolt has an approximate safe load of 1,840 lbs. [835 kg].
Keep this in mind for the number of Bolts you use to lift the Grain Bin during assembly.

Bolt Installation
CAUTION! All Hardware should be tightened from the NUT side. Bin Seal Bolts
MUST be tightened from the Nut side. Failure to do so can damage the
sealing Washer and cause leaks.
Tighten 5/16'' Nuts to 15-20 ft-lb of torque.
Tighten 3/8'' Nuts to 25-30 ft-lb of torque..
Tighten 1/2'' Nuts to 45-50 ft-lb of torque.

The Approximate Working Height is essential in planning the support of the Roof
by center support. Be sure your lifting equipment is adequate for the height and
weight of your particular Roof. Refer to jacking instructions in your Base
Construction Manual.
The weight of the 48' [14 630] Roof Sub-Structure is 1914 lbs [868 kg].
The weight of the 54' [16 459] Roof Sub-Structure is 2148 lbs [974 kg].

Venting

Figure 5. Mushroom Vent Figure 6. Elbow Vent

A BROCK® “Mushroom” Roof Vent provides 1.25 sq. ft. [.116 m ] of opening. 2

See Figure 5.
A BROCK® “Elbow” Vent provides 1.33 sq. ft. [.124 m ] of opening. See Figure 6.
2

CAUTION! For a Vacuum System, venting must be added at the rate of 1 sq. ft [.093
m ] of vent per 1000 cfm of air.
2

For a Pressure System, venting must be added at the rate of 1 sq. ft.
[093 m ] of vent per 2000 cfm of air.
2

Roof Vents should be installed as high up on the Panels as possible for best venting
results. Vents should be installed before assembling Roof Sheets. Vents require
field-cutting a hole in the Roof Sheet before installation.

IMPORTANT! Avoid cutting vent holes in the Stiffener Ring placement area of the
Roof Panel.
See the charts on Pages 24 and 25 for Stiffener Ring placement and avoid this area.
Installation instructions are also packed with the Vents in the BROCK® Vent
Instruction MGB1359.

Figure 7.
Avoid Vent Placement at Stiffener Ring:
(This example resulted in both dent damage to the Vent and installation
difficulty at a Ring/Expander location.)

CAUTION! Operation of aeration fans without safety shutoff devices during

periods of high humidity and low temperatures can cause the Air Vents
to frost over and create a vacuum or pressure strong enough to
seriously damage your Roof and Bin.

IMPORTANT! Your Roof will attach to either a standard BROCK® Grain Bin with
2.67'' [68] corrugation or a BROCK® “Next Generation” Bin with 4'' [102]
corrugation.
Mark the Body Sheet Radius on the stemwall. Keep it centered. Remember this is
not the Anchor Bolt Radius. Measurement should be exactly the same from center
to any point around the marked circle.

The Body Sheet Radius of the 48' bin is 23' - 10 1/2'' [7 277].
The Body Sheet Radius of the 54' bin is 26' - 10 1/4'' [8 816].

Assemble the Top Body Sheet ring/tier and Top Stiffeners according to instructions
in your Base Construction Manual.
Then return to this Manual.

Assembly Overview

END VIEW

Figure 26. Roof Sheet and Rib Overlap

There are 64 Roof Panels on the 48' [13 630] Roof.

There are 72 Roof Panels on the 54' [16 459] Roof.
There is only one Manhole Panel. Selecting the Manhole location is critical because
it also determines the Roof Ladder/Handrail location—the Panel to its left. The
Ladder/Handrail will be on a standard Roof Panel just to the left of a Rafter.

Begin Roof sheeting by choosing the Manhole Panel and Ladder/Handrail location.
Start left of the Manhole and go clockwise or left. Continue this process around the
grain bin, aligning holes with a drift punch and tightening the Bolts (from
underneath) in the ribs as you go, finishing with the Manhole Panel, both ribs on top.

Roof Ribs directly over a Rafter attach to the Bolt already installed, with a 5/16''
Weatherseal Washer and 5/16'' Hex Nut outside.

It may work better to install the two (2) Roof Panels that attach to each Rafter first,
then go around again, filling in the other two.

Adding Roof Ladder Rungs now will make Roof access easier.

At the lower end of the Roof Panel, use 5/16 x 1'' Bin Seal Bolts and Flange Nuts to
bolt the Roof Panel to the Roof Anchor Brackets.

22 MCB1484i
BROCK® Commercial Grain Bin Roof 48' and 54' [14 630 and 16 459] Roof Sheeting

The top two holes in the Rib do not get Bolts at this time. Transitions will bolt over
this hole later.

Continue adding Roof Panels, using 5/16'' x 1'' Hex Head Gr. 8 Bin Seal Bolts
outside and a 5/16'' Hex Nut on the inside.
IMPORTANT! Remember to install Vents in the Roof Panels before bolting Roof
Panels to the Roof Sub-Structure.
Install the Walk Ring and Stiffener Ring at this time as well. Refer to the
Planning notes on Page 9, and assembly instructions on Pages 24-25 in
this Manual.
Be sure to attach the Wind Ring Bracket to the Rib between Rafters.

IMPORTANT! If at any time the Compression Ring should not be LEVEL during the
installation of Roof Panels in one area, STOP.
Adjust the structure with a jack and/or a 2'' x 6'' [51 x 152] lift support until
readjustment of the Compression Ring to level can be made.

MCB1484i 23
Walk Ring and Stiffener Rings BROCK® Commercial Grain Bin Roof 48' and 54' [14 630 and 16 459]

Walk Ring and Stiffener Rings

Brackets
Brackets (9-23987) are used for both the Walk Rings and Stiffener Rings which are
installed on top of the Roof Ribs as Panels are added. Attach using the same Bolt that
connects the Roof Ribs, placing a Neoprene Washer (39-20079) between the Bracket
and Roof Rib.
Brackets are installed on the fourth hole down on every other Rib for the Walk Ring.
For the Stiffener Ring:
On the 48' Roof, install this Bracket in the eleventh hole down, one every rib.
On the 54' Roof, install this same Bracket in the twelfth hole down, one every rib.

Tubing
Tubing to assemble the Rings can be inserted into the Brackets as the Roof Panels are
being assembled, or the Tubing can be inserted later. See Figure 28.

Walk Ring Tubing (9-19993) comes 60'' [1 524] long.

Ten pieces are required to complete the 54' [16 459] Walk Ring.
Stiffener Ring Tubing (9-24822) is 60'' [1 524] long.
23 pieces are required to complete the 48' Stiffener Ring.
25 pieces are required to complete the 54' Stiffener Ring.
Field-cut the last piece of Tubing to fit and complete the Rings.

Connections
Assemble Rings by slipping Tubing ends over Expanders and Joiners. Expanders and
Tube Splices are alternated between Tube connections.
Expanders are 6'' [152] long for Walk Rings and 8'' [203] for Stiffener Rings.
The Walk Ring uses five 6'' Expanders (9-14576) and five Tube Splices (9-12797).
The 48' Stiffener Ring uses eleven 8'' Expanders (9-12796) and twelve Tube (13)
Splices (9-12797).
The 54' Stiffener Ring uses twelve 8'' Expanders (9-12796) and thirteen Tube (13)
Splices (9-12797).
CAUTION! Never try to adjust the Expander Nuts beyond the staked area of 2" [51]
maximum between Nuts.
Nuts on Expanders MUST be together in the center of the Expander
during assembly of the Stiffener Ring.
When the roof assembly is complete, turn Nuts on the Expanders to tighten the
Stiffener Ring slightly.
