1. A cooler pressure of 10 bar and refrigerator pressure of 1.1 bar are used in an air
refrigeration system with temperature of air leaving the cooler is 280C and air leaving
the room is 70C. Calculate the capacity of the system in terms of TR, power required
pa
per TR, Expander displacement if compressor displacement is 40 m3 / min. [15]

2. A R-12 refrigeration machines has saturated suction temperature of 40C and saturated
pe
discharge temperature of 390C. Determine: (a) the theoretical piston displacement per
ton of refrigeration (TR) (b) The theoretical power per ton of refrigeration (TR) and
(c) C.O.P. of the system when the compression is wet. [5+5+5]

3. Draw the actual vapour compression refrigeration system and discuss the salient points
about the actual cycle. [15]

4. With the help of a neat diagram, explain the working details of thermostatic expansion
valve and give its working temperature and pressure ranges. [15]

5. In a vapour absorption type refrigerator, the heat supplied to NH3 generator by
condensing steam at 1.9 bar and 95% dry, the temperature in the refrigerator is to be
maintained at -40 C. Find the maximum C.O.P possible. If the refrigeration load is 34
b-
tonnes and actual C.O.P is 75% of the maximum C.O.P., find the mass of steam
required per hour. Take the temperature of the atmosphere as 280 C. [15]

6.a) What is the role ejector system in steam refrigeration system? Explain with a suitable
diagram.
b) Differentiate between pulsejet refrigeration and vortex tube refrigeration system and
21
discuss the salient features of each one. [7+8]

7. With an outdoor air at 120C and 36 % RH is to supply an air conditioning system at

50 m3 / min to condition it to 280C and 65% RH. The outdoor air is first heated to 200C
in the heating section and then humidified by hot steam injection. The entire process is
to take place at 0.1 MPa and calculate the rate of heat supplied in the heating section
and mass flow rate of steam required in the humidifying section. Represent this on the
psychometric chart. [15]

8. What do you understand the concept of effective temperature for the human comfort?
Discuss the method to achieve it in summer. [15]
