Problems.
1. During a compaction test a soil attains a maximum dry density of 1.86 t/m³ at water
content of 15% and specific gravity of soil is 2.7. Determine the degree of saturation,
air content and percentageof air voids at the maximum dry density corresponding to
zero air voids at optimum water content?

2. An earth embankment is to be compacted to a dry density of 1.84 g/cm³ at a

placement water content of 15%. The in situ bulk density and water content in the
borrow pits are 1.77 g/cm³ and 8% respectively. How much excavation should he
carry out in the borrow pits for each cubic meter of the embankment?

3. A given subgrade soil has been compacted and a test hole of 15 cm diameter, 20 cm
depth is dug in the compacted layer. The material as taken from the hole weights 6.8
kg and has a moisture content of 10%. What is the relative compaction of the soil if
the maximum dry density of this soil is 1.76 g/cm³. According to the saturated Proctor
test?

4. Given soil compaction test results as follows:

W% 8.3 9.6 10.5 11.3 12.2 13.4 13.8

Dry density gm/cm3 2.02 2.11 2.16 2.20 2.182 2.16 2.15

The specific gravity of the soil is 2.65, the test is a saturated test.
Required:

 Plot the moisture-density curve.

 Plot the saturation (zero eur voids) curve.
 Plot the 5 and 10% air voids curves.
 Determine the O.M.C and the achieved max dry density of this soil.
