Problems.
1. A sample of soil obtained from a borrow pit has a wet weight of 16 kg. The
total volume occupied by the sample when in the ground was 8490cm³. A small
portion of the sample is used to determine the water content. The wet sample
weighs 150g. After drying, it weights 125g.
 What is the water content of the sample?
 Determine the wet and the dry unit weights of the soil in the borrow Pit.

2. A 1-ft3 sample of undisturbed soil is found to have a dry weight of 50 kg. If the
specific gravity of soil solids is 2.70, what is the void ratio of the sample? What
is the porosity?

3. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0.008 m³. The dry
weight of the sample is 14 kg. Water is carefully added to the container so as
not to disturb the condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the
combined weight of soil plus water is 17 kg. From these data, compute the void
ratio of the soil in the container, and the specific gravity of the soil particles.

4. Demonstrate that e , A=n(1-S), Se=wGs, γd=Gs (1-n)γw

5. Given the following data for an undisturbed soil sample, W=10 %. Gs = 2.69.
e=0.65, Determine wet unit weight, dry unit weight, and degree of Saturation.

6. A soil has a bulk density of 1.91 g/cm³ and a water content of 9.5 %. The
value of G, is 2.70. Calculate the void ratio and degree of saturation of the soil.
What would be the values of density and water content if the soil were fully
saturated at the same void ratio?

7. Calculate the dry unit weight, the saturated unit weight and the buoyant unit
weight of a soil having a void ratio of 0.70 and a value of G, of 2.72. Calculate
also the ’nit weight and water content at a degree of saturation of 75%.

8. A 50-ml sample of moist soil has a mass of 95 g. Oven-dried, its mass is 75
gm. The specific gravity of soil averages 2.67. Find e, n, w, S,and γ of the moist
soil.

9. A sand with an average specific gravity of solids of 2.66 and a void ratio of 0.6
is initially dry but becomes saturated by a rising water table.
 Compute n.
 Compute and if the sand is dry.
 Compute and if the sand is 40% saturated.
 Compute and when the sand becomes saturated.

10. A soil has a unit weight of 20 kN/m³, and a water content of 14%. Find its new
water content if it dries to a unit weight of 18 kN/m³ without a change of void
ratio.

11. A sample of silt 10 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm thick is compressed to a 2cm

thickness without a change in diameter. Its initial void ratio is 1.35, and its
specific gravity of solids is 2.70. Find the initial weight saturated, its void ratio
after compression, and its unit weight, after compression, and the change in
water content caused by compression. Assume that all of the compression is
produced by a reduction in void Ratio accompanied by a loss of water.

12. A soil has a specific gravity of solids of 2.72, a void ratio of 0.78, and a water
content of 20%.
 Compute its density unit weight and degree of saturation.
 What will its new unit weight and void ratio be if it is compacted (a
reduction in void ratio) without loss of water until it becomes saturated?

13. A natural soil deposit has a bulk density of 1.88 gr/cm³ and water content of
5%, Calculate the amount of water required to be added to one cubic meter of
soil to raise the water content to 15%. Assume the void ratio to remain
constant. What will then be the degree of saturation? Assume G, = 2.67.

14. A cube of dried clay having sides 4 or long weighs 110 gm. The same cube of
soil, when saturated at unchanged volume, weighs 135 gm. Draw the soil
element showing the volumes and weights of the constituents, and then
determine the constituents, and then determine the specific gravity of soil
solids, and the void ratio.
