Answer these questions.

1. Define matter?

Anything that occupies space and has weight is called matter.

2. How is solid different from a liquid?

Solids have a fixed shape and definite volume. Their molecules are tightly packed.
On the other hand, though liquids have a definite volume but they do not have a
fixed shape. They take the shape of the container in which they are kept. Their
molecules are loosely packed.

3. Water can exist in all three states. Explain.

Water is the liquid state. When water freezes, it becomes ice. Ice is the solid state of
water. When water is boiled, it changes into water vapour. Water vapour is the
gaseous form of water. Thus, water can exist in all three states.

4. What is a solution?
The liquid we get when a solute dissolves in a solvent is called solution.
5. What is evaporation?

The process in which a liquid changes to gas on heating is called evaporation.

HOTS

1. Why are liquids able to flow, whereas solids are not?

In liquids molecules are not tightly packed whereas in solids molecules are very tightly
packed. So, liquids can flow whereas solids cannot flow.

2. When we burn an incense stick in a room, how does the fragrance fill the entire room?

Incense stick produces smoke which is majority made up of gases. Molecules in a gas are
loosely packed. Molecules in a gas can move around freely and spread out to fill the
available space.
