A. Introduction What I need to know?

Matter commonly exists on earth in three forms: solid, liquid, or gas- which are called as three states
of matter.
The main difference of the three is based on how the molecules move. Solid molecules are tightly
packed and cannot move much, liquid molecules have more space and can move freely, while gas
molecules are farther and move very fast.

FREEZING MELTING OF CONDENSATION EVAPORATION

B. Development

Matter can change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition. This
physical change is called Phase Change.
Melting happens
when solid turns to
liquid.
When solid is heated, it
absorbs energy
enough to overcome the force that holds
the particles together. The
attraction
between
particles
becomes less
allowing them to move
freely. When this happens, the melting point of the solid is reached and the solid melts. Melting
point is the temperature at which solid turns into a liquid.

If more heat is added, liquid particles move rapidly and farther apart. At this point, boiling point is
reached. Boiling point is the temperature at which vapor
pressure becomes high that causes bubbles to form inside the body of the liquid and evaporation
happens. Evaporation is the change from
liquid to gas. As liquid absorbs energy when heated,
the closer particles of liquid
become
separated.
There will be less
attraction
between
particles which allows them to move
freely.
The reverse process can also happen. A gas can be cooled to become liquid. This process is
called condensation. Condensation happens when a gas turns into a liquid. When a gas loses
heat, the particles become closer and roll over as it turns into liquid.
Further cooling of the liquid causes freezing or

solidification. This
process allows the particles to get closer and
have rigid position. The particles can no longer
move freely instead, they will just vibrate. The
temperature
wherein a liquid solidifies is called freezing point.

Solids also have a vapor pressure, though it is generally

much less than that of a liquid.  A snow bank will gradually
disappear even if the temperature stays below 0°C.  The
snow does not melt, but instead passes directly from the
solid state to the vapor state.  Sublimation is the change of
state from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid
state.
• Ex. Dry ice, frozen foods, snow
Gas to solid phase transitions are known as
"deposition."
Under certain circumstances, gas can transform directly
into a solid. This process is called deposition.
Water vapor to ice - water vapor transforms directly into ice
without becoming a liquid, a process that often occurs on
windows during the winter months.
Physical vapor to film - thin layers of material known as
"film" are deposited onto a surface using a vaporized form of the film.

Answer the following questions

1. Aaron told by his mother to boil two cups of water for coffee, after a while he observed some
smoke like coming from boiling water and float in the air. What do you think is the Physical
change occur?
2. Jessica went to play volleyball, after she get tired, she get the bottle of water that she put in
their freezer but she observes that the water become ice. What physical change occur with the
water? What if she put the water bottle in the hot water?
3. When the sun rises, William and Jenny hang their wet clothes outside and in the afternoon
they went to collect their clothes but they noticed that it is already dry. How does that wet
clothes dried up?

C. Engagement What’s more?

Match column A with column B
and send your answers through the teacher’s messenger account.
Column A
_____ 1. Phase Change
_____ 2. Freezing
_____ 3. Condensation
_____ 4. Melting
_____ 5. Evaporation
_____ 6. Freezing point
_____ 7. Boiling point
_____ 8. Melting point
_____ 9. 100°C
_____ 10. 0°C

Column B
a. temperature wherein a liquid solidifies
b. change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition
c. the temperature at which solid turns into a liquid
d. the temperature at which vapor pressure becomes high that causes bubbles to form inside
the body of the liquid
e. the change from liquid to gas
f. happens when solid turns to liquid
g. freezing and melting point of water
h. boiling point of water
i. happens when a gas turns into a liquid

What I can do?

Group yourself into 2 or 3 persons. Pick 1 example of
phase change and draw how its molecules and atoms
are arrange. Draw it a one whole sheet of paper. Take a
picture and present the picture in google meet/ online
class. You have 10 minutes to work on the activity.

MELTING FREEZING

EVAPORATION CONDENSATION
D. Assimilation What I have learned?
Below is a water cycle diagram. Label the arrows with the correct word that corresponds to
the process involved.
• When warmed by the sun, water on the surface of oceans and
freshwater bodies evaporates, forming a vapor. Water vapor
rises into the atmosphere, where it condenses, and forming
clouds. It then falls back to the ground as precipitation.
Moisture can also enter the atmosphere directly from ice or
snow. In a process called sublimation, solid water, such as
ice or snow, can transform directly into water vapor without first
becoming a liquid.
