IV. PROCEDURES

A. Preparatory activities 1. Opening prayer

2. Energizer
3. Checking of attendance
4. A demonstration on the bent pencil (materials; a glass of water and a pencil)

B. Motivation 1. How does bending of light rays happen? Ans. The change in direction of
light .
2. What do you call the bending of light at the boundary between two
different media? Ans. Refraction
3. Why do light rays bend as it passes from one medium to another? Ans.
Due to the change in the velocity of light as it travels from one medium
to another.
Light has a dual nature. It behaves like a wave and as particle. Light being a wave exhibits
the characteristics and properties of a wave.

The bending of light rays is dependent upon the optical density of a medium. Let us
perform an activity.

C. Activity Take figure 5 (Refraction of light) page 95 and figure 6 (Refraction of light in water)
page 96 in the learners’ module.. Study and analyse.

D. Analysis 1. What happens to the light ray at the boundary between air and water?Ans. (The light
ray are refracted)
2. Why does refraction of light happens? Ans.(Because light travels in two media
with different optical density)
3. What is the known indicator of optical density? Ans.(Index of refraction)
4. What is index of refraction? Ans. (Index of refraction is the ratio of the speed of light
in vacuum to the speed of light in material. In symbols n=c/v).It tells about the optical
density of a material.
E. Abstraction How do you find the index of refraction in a material? (using n=c/v ) where n=index of
refraction, c= 3x108 m/s, speed of light in a vacuum, v=speed of light in a material
Here is table 1showing index of refraction of some materials.\\\

Table 1

Materials Index of Refraction

Diamond 2.147
Zircon 1.923
Light flint glass 1.580
Crown glass 1.520
Ethyl Alcohol 1.510
Water 1.360
Ice air 1.310
Vacuum 1.000
When light travels from a less dense to a denser medium, the bending of light ray is toward
the normal line. However, when light travels from a denser medium to a less dense
material, the bending is away from the normal line.

F. Application Sample Problem 1: Light travels from air into an optical fiber with an index of refraction of
1.44. (a) In which direction does the light bend? (b)If the angle of incidence on the end of
the fiber is 22o, Sketch the path of light as it changes media.
Ans.
(a) Since the light is traveling from a rarer region (lower n) to a denser region (higher n), it
will bend toward the normal.

(b) The path of the light is shown in the figure below.

G. Practical Applications https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-uses-of-refraction-in-our-daily-life
of Concepts and Skills Give 5 examples of uses of refraction in daily life. Ans.
in Daily Living 1. A stick held obliquely and partly immersed in water appears to be bend at the water
surface.
2. An object placed under water appears to be raised.
3. A pool of water appears to be less deep than it actually is.
4. The stars appear to twinkle on a clear sky.
5. A lemon kept in water in a glass tumbler appears to be bigger than its actual size, when
viewed from the sides.

H. Generalization Refraction is the bending of light at the boundary between two different media. The
bending of light depends upon the index of refraction in which light travels.
When light travels from less dense to denser medium, the bending is toward the normal
line. When it travels from denser to less dense, then the bending is away from the normal
line.
