IV. PROCEDURES

A.
ELICIT How do we calculate the candle-power ?

During brownout, what alternative source of light do you use at
home? There are different sources of light that we can use. If no
rechargeable lamps are available we may use lampara. And the
following activity will describe and differentiate the brightness of
different sources of light. Let us explore.
Activity 1: Light Sources: Langis Kandila or Diwali Lights
B. ENGAGE
Procedure

Part 2: Langis Kandila or Lampara

1. Make 5 langis kandila or lampara using aluminium pie
containersor small clay pots as shown.Label your langis
kandila as DLKL1,DL-KL2 and so on.
2. Pour different variety of vegetable oil in each of the pot.
3. Use the improvised photometer to determine the brightness
of each of the candle.
4. Replace the candle you used in the 1st part with the langis
kandila.
5. Compute the candle power of the lamp with respect to the
langis kandila. You may refer to step 4 for the step by
step process of determining the candle power using
the improvised photometer. Recordyour data on the
provided table:

EXPLORE
  2. Which among the variety of vegetable oils for
langis kandila or lampara has the greatest
intensity?
  3. Relate intensity with the brightness of the source
of light.
D. 1. Identify substances that could be sources of light?
2. How do we calculate the brightness of the source of light?
EXPLAIN
  3. Describe the relationship between intensity and brightness
of the lamp.
There are several sources of light available around us. You
can choose from dim to bright to brighter to brightest. Give
examples of sources of light that you are familiar with.

Sources of Light

ELABORATE There are two general sources of light: the natural source
and artificial source.

(I) Natural Sources : Our most important natural source of

light is the sun. Nearly all the natural light we receive
E. comes from the sun; moonlight is sunlight reflected
from the surface of the moon. Distant stars provide an
  extremely small amount of light.

(II) Artificial Sources : There are several ways of
producing artificial light. In general, artificial light
source can be divided into three categories viz.

(i) Thermal Sources : Example of thermal source are

incandescent lamp, burning candle, etc. When object
is heated until it glows or becomes incandescent, it
emits all visible wavelengths along with large quantity
of infrared radiation. Hence, as producers of visible
radiation (i.e. luminous energy), they have a low
efficiency. Generally, the efficiency of such light
sources improves as the operating temperature is
increased.

(ii) Gas Discharge Sources : Example of gas discharge

source are neon lamp, sodium lamps, etc. In this case,
light is obtained by maintaining electric current in a gas
at low pressure. Such a source emits only a few
wavelength. The color and intensity of light of light
depends upon the nature of gas or vapor only. It may
be noted that in case of light emitted by a thermal
source, the spectrum is continuous. However, when
light is obtained from a gaseous discharge, the
