Electromagnetic induction
Class: 12 Subject: Physics
1. Distinguish the magnetic properties of a dia-, para and ferromagnetic
substances in terms of (i) susceptibility, (ii) magnetic permeability. Give one
example of each of these materials. Draw the field lines due to an external
magnetic field near a (i) diamagnetic, (ii) paramagnetic substance.

2. a) State Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction.

(b) A rod of length ‘l’ is moved horizontally with a uniform velocity 'v' in a
direction perpendicular to its length through a region in which a uniform
magnetic field is acting vertically downward. Derive the expression for the emf
induced across the ends of the rod
c) A rectangular coil of N turns, area A is held in a uniform magnetic field B. If
the coil is rotated at a steady angular speed ꞷ, deduce an expression for the
induced emf in the coil at any instant of time.

3. Define the term 'self-inductance'. Give its unit. Deduce an expression for the
self-inductance of a long solenoid of N turns, having a core of relative
permeability µr. Write an expression for the energy stored in an inductor when
a steady current 'I' is passed through it. Is this energy electric or magnetic?

4. (a) Define the coefficient of mutual induction.

(b) Deduce an expression for the mutual inductance of two long coaxial
solenoids having different radii and different number of turns
(c) In an experiment, two coils C1 and C2 are placed close to each other. Find
out the expression for the emf induced in the coil C1 due to a change in the
current through the coil C2.

5. A rectangular wire loop of sides 8 cm and 2 cm with a small cut is moving out
of a region of uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.3 T directed normal to the
loop. What is the emf developed across the cut if the velocity of the loop is
1cms -1 in a direction normal to the (i) longer side (ii) shorter side of the loop?
For how long does the induced voltage last in each case

6. A metallic rod of length L is rotated at an angular speed ꞷ normal to a uniform

magnetic field B. Derive expressions for the (i) emf induced in the rod (ii)
current induced and (iii) heat dissipation, if the resistance of the rod is R

7. A 0.5 m long metal rod PQ completes the circuit as shown in Fig. The area of
the circuit is perpendicular to the magnetic field of flux density 0.15 T. If the
resistance of the total circuit is 3 Q, calculate the force needed to move the
rod in the direction as indicated with a constant speed of 2 rns- 1.

8. A metallic rod of length L is rotated at an angular speed ro normal to a uniform

magnetic field R Derive expressions for the (i) emf induced in the rod (ii)
current induced and (iii) heat dissipation, if the resistance of the rod is R

9. A solenoid of length 50 cm with 20 turns per cm and area of cross-section

40cm2 completely surrounds another co-axial solenoid of the same length,
area of cross-section 25 cm2 with 25 turns per cm. Calculate the mutual-
inductance of the system
10. Predict the direction of induced current in metal rings 1 and 2 when current 1
in the wire is steadily decreasing as shown in fig.
