(i) Magnetic flux and (ii) Alternating emf versus time generated by a loop of wire rotating in
a magnetic field.
(b) Why is choke coil needed in the use of fluorescent tubes with ac mains? {4}

7) The instantaneous current and voltage of a.c. circuit are given by i = 10 sin 300 t A
and v = 200 sin 300 t V. What is power dissipation in the circuit? {1}

8) A 100 μ capacitor in series with a 40 ohm resistance is connected to a 100 V, 60 Hz supply


calculate (i) the reactance (ii) the impedance (iii) maximum current in the circuit. {3}

9) A circular coil of radius 10 cm, 500 turns and resistance 2 Ω is placed with its plane
perpendicular to the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field. It is rotated about its
vertical diameter through 180° in 0.25 s. Estimate the magnitudes of the emf and current

induced in the coil. Horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field at the place is
3.0 × 10–5 T. {3}

10) A series LCR circuit is connected to an ac source having voltage ν = Vm sin ωt. Derive the
expression for the instantaneous current I and its phase relationship to the applied voltage.
Obtain the condition for resonance to occur.
Define ‘power factor’.
State the conditions under which it is (i) maximum and (ii) minimum. {4}

11) A power transmission line feeds input power at 2200 V to a step-down transformer with its
primary windings having 300 turns. Find the number of turns in the secondary to get the
power output at 220 V.
State one form of energy loss in transformer {2}

12) A device X is connected across an ac source of voltage V = V0 sin ωt. The current
through X is given as
I = I0 sin (ωt + π /2 ).
(a) Identify the device X and write the expression for its reactance.
(b) Draw graphs showing variation of voltage and current with time over one cycle of
ac, for X.
(c) How does the reactance of the device X vary with frequency of the ac? Show this
variation graphically.
(d) Draw the phasor diagram for the device X. {4}

13) Why should the spring suspension wire in a moving coil galvanometer have low torsional
constant? {1}

14) Two wires of equal lengths are bent in the form of two loops. One of the loops is square
shaped whereas the other loops is circular, These are suspended in a uniform magnetic field
and the same current is passed through them. Which loop will experience greater torque?
Give reasons. {1}

15) Depict the magnetic field lines due to two straight, long, parallel
conductors carrying currents I1 and I2 in the same direction. Hence
deduce an expression for the force acting per unit length on one
conductor due to the other. Is this force attractive or repulsive?
Figure shows a rectangular current – carrying loop placed 2 cm
away from a long, straight, current –carrying conductor. What is
the direction and magnitude of the net force acting on the loop?

16) A circular coil of 20 turns and radius 10 cm is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.10 T
normal to the plane of the coil. If the current in the coil is 5.0 A, what is the (a) total torque
on the coil, (b) total force on the coil, (c) average force on each electron in the coil due to the
magnetic field? (The coil is made of copper wire of cross-sectional area 10–5 m2, and the free
electron density in copper is given to be about 1029 m–3.) {3}

17) State Ampere’s circuital law. Using the Ampere’s circuital law, obtain the expression for the
