1. State Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic Induction.


2. Define electromagnetic induction.
3. State lenz’s law.

4. Name and define the unit used for measuring the coefficient of mutual
inductance. State the relation of this unit with the units of magnetic flux and
electric current.
5. Define mutual inductance. A pair of adjacent coils has a mutual inductance of
1.5 H. If the current in one coil changes from 0 to 20 A in 0.5 s, what is the
change of flux linkage with the other coil?
6. A current is induced in coil C1, due to the motion of current-carrying coil C2.
(i) Write any two ways by which a large deflection can be obtained in the
galvanometer G.
(ii) Suggest an alternative device to demonstrate the induced current in place
of a galvanometer.

7. A horizontal straight wire of length L extending from east to west is falling with
speed v at right angles to the horizontal component of Earth’s magnetic field B.
a) Write the expression for the instantaneous value of the emf induced in the
wire.
b) What is the direction of the emf?
c) Which end of the wire is at the higher potential?
8. Predict the directions of induced currents in metal rings 1 and 2 lying in the
same place where current I in the wire is increasing steadily.

9. What is induced emf? Write Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction.


Express it mathematically. A conducting rod of length ‘L’ with one end pivoted is
rotated with a uniform angular velocity ‘ω’ in a vertical plane, normal to a
uniform magnetic field ‘B’. Deduce an expression for the emf induced in this rod.
10. How is the mutual inductance of a pair of coils affected when:
(a) the separation between the coils is increased?.
(b) The number of turns of each coil is increased?
(c) A thin iron sheet is placed between the two coils, other factors remaining
the same? Explain your answer in each case.
11. Current in a circuit falls from 5.0 A to 0. 0 A in 0.1 s. If an average emf of 200

V induced, give an estimate of the self-inductance of the circuit


12. Predict the polarity of plate A of the capacitor, when a magnet is moved

towards it, as shown.

13. A square loop of side 10 cm and resistance 0.5 Ω is placed vertically in the
east-west plane. A uniform magnetic field of 0.10 T is set up across the plane
in the north-east direction. The magnetic field is decreased to zero in 0.70 s at
a steady rate. Determine the magnitudes of induced emf and current during
this time-interval.
14. A circular coil of radius 10 cm, 500 turns and resistance 2 Ω is placed with
itsplane perpendicular to the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic
field. It is rotated about its vertical diameter through 180° in 0.25 s. Estimate
the magnitudes of the emf and current induced in the coil. Horizontal
component of the earth’s magnetic field at the place is 3.0 × 10–5 T
15. Figure shows planar loops of different shapes moving out of or into a region of

a magnetic field which is directed normal to the plane of the loop away from
the reader. Determine the direction of induced current in each loop using
Lenz’s law.
16. (a) A closed loop is held stationary in the magnetic field between the north
andsouth poles of two permanent magnets held fixed. Can we hope to
generatecurrent in the loop by using very strong magnets?
(b) A closed loop moves normal to the constant electric field between the plates
of a large capacitor. Is a current induced in the loop (i) when it is wholly
inside the region between the capacitor plates (ii) when it is partially outside
the plates of the capacitor? The electric field is normal to the plane of the
loop.
(c) A rectangular loop and a circular loop are moving out of a uniform magnetic
field region (fig) to a field-free region with a constant velocity v. In which loop
do you expect the induced emf to be constant during the passage out of the
field region? The field is normal to the loops.

(d) Predict the polarity of the capacitor in the situation described by Fig

18. A rectangular coil of area A, having a number of turns N, is rotated at f
revolutions per second in a uniform magnetic field B, the field being
perpendicular to the coil. Prove that the maximum emf induced in the coil is
2π f N B A.
19. State Lenz’s law. Explain by giving examples that Lenz’s law is a consequence

of the law of conservation of energy.


20. Define the term ‘mutual-inductance’ and write its SI unit.
Obtain the expression for the mutual inductance of two long co-axial
solenoids S1 and S2 wound one over the other, each of length L and radii r 1
and r2 and n1 and n2 number of turns per unit length when a current I is set
up in the outer solenoid S2.
21. Derive an expression for the emf induced across the ends of a straight
conductor of length I moving at right angles to a uniform magnetic field B with
a uniform speedy.

1. The peak value of e.m.f. in a.c. is E0. Write its (i) rms(ii) average value over a
complete cycle.
2. An alternating current from a source is given by i=10sin314t. What is the
effective value of current and frequency of source?
3. Define the term inductive reactance. Write its SI unit.
4. Explain the term capacitive reactance. Write its SI unit.

5. What is meant by impedance? Write an expression for impedance of LCR circuit.


Write its SI unit.
6. Define the term power factor. State the condition under which it is i) maximum
ii) minimum.
7. Define the term ‘watt less current’.
8. Draw a graph between inductive reactance and capacitive reactance with
frequency of a.c source.
9. A capacitor blocks DC but allows AC. Explain.
10. A 100 Ω resistor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz ac supply.

a) What is the rms value of current in the circuit?

b) What is the net power consumed over a full cycle?


11. a) The peak voltage of an ac supply is 300 V. What is the rms voltage?

b) The rms value of current in an ac circuit is 10 A. What is the peak current?


12. A 44 mH inductor is connected to 220 V, 50 Hz ac supply. Determine the rms
value of the current in the circuit.
13. A 60 μF capacitor is connected to a 110 V, 60 Hz ac supply. Determine the rms
value of the current in the circuit.
 14. A power transmission line feeds input power at 2300 V to a step-down
transformer with its primary windings having 4000 turns. What should be the
number of turns in the secondary in order to get output power at 230 V?

15. Write the principle of which transformer works.


16. An ac voltage V=V0sinωtis applied across a pure inductor of inductance L. Show
mathematically that the current flowing through it lags behind the applied voltage by a
phase angle of π/2.
17. For a given a.c., i = imsinωt, show that the average power dissipated in a
resistor R over a complete cycle is ½ im2 R. 
18. Describe briefly any two energy losses, giving the reason of their occurrence in
actual transformer. How are these reduced?

19. Draw a schematic diagram of a step-up transformer. Explain its working
principle. Deduce the expression for the secondary to primary voltage in terms of
the number of turns in the two coils. In an ideal transformer, how is this ratio
related to the currents in the two coils? How is the transformer used in large scale
transmission and distribution of electrical energy over long distances?
20. A device 'X' is connected to an ac source V = Vosinωt. The variation of voltage,
current and power in one cycle is shown in the following graph :

(a) Identify the device 'X'.


(b) Which of the curves A, B and C represent the voltage, current and the power
consumed in the circuit? Justify your answer.
(c) How does its impedance vary with frequency of the ac source? Show graphically.
(d) Obtain an expression for the current in the circuit and its phase relation with ac

voltage.
21.Derive the expression for current when AC voltage applied to a capacitor.
