Mr. Otis, an American Minister, bought a large house called Canterville Chase. The Lord
Canterville told him that the house was haunted by ghosts. He said that everyone who has
lived in this house became ill and very scared. But Mr. Otis wasn’t scared and did not
believed him. A few weeks later he moved into the house with his family ona lovely July
evening. Mr.Otis’ wife, Lucretia was a beautiful woman; Their oldest son, Washington was a
good-looking young man; Their daughter, Virginia was slime, beautiful and with blue eyes;
Their twins son were very lovely and very playful. As they got near to Canterville Chase, Mrs.
Umney stood in front of the house. She was the housekeeper. She directed them to the
library because she had prepared tea. In the library, there was a dark red stain on the floor.
Mrs. Umney said to them that this was blood, the blood of Lady Eleanore de Canterville after
her husband killed her. She said that no one can clean the blood but Washington did that. He
used a stain cleaner. Mrs. Umney fell to the floor. Mr. Otis was very angry and said that he
would take money from her wages every time she fains. The storm continued all night long
but the family slept quite well. The next morning when they came downstairs for breakfast
they saw the blood again, again and again. In the evening thay go out for a drive. They came
at nine o’clock, ate diner and at eleven o’clock they go to sleep. A strange noise that came
from the hall outside the bedroom, woke Mr.Otis. He opened his bedroom door and saw a
terrible sight. An old man with red eyes and long grey hair was in the hall. His clothes were
old and dirty. There were chains around his wrists and ankles and they caused the noise. Mr.
Otis gave him a bottle of oil and told him that he must oil the chains. Then he went back to
his bedroom and fell asleep again. The ghost became very angry so he picked up the bottle
and threw it onto the floor. He could not believe his eyes or his ears because every person
that see him will be ill or very scared. But the Otis family were not scared. However, as he got
near the top of the stairs, twins came out from their room. The twins threw a large pillow at
the ghost’s head. He disappeard from the hall in a flash of green light. The ghost had to take
revenge. He was planning all the night. The next morning, when the Otis family met at
breakfast they talked about the ghost. He said to the boys that it wasn’t polite to threw a
pillow in people face. For the rest of the week, the ghost disappeard but they know he was
there because of the blood stain. They noticed that the blood stain was changing colour. The
ghost finally appeared again on Sunday night. He tried to put on a suit of armour which stood
in the hall. But the armour was very heavy and it fell to the floor. The ghost rubbed his knees
and looked very unhappy. The twins started to shoot pellets at the ghost and he became very
angry and made a terrible noise. He disappeared again. Every Saturday, he walked in the hall
from midnight until three o’clock, but he tried not to let the family see or hear him so he took
off his shoes and oiled his chains. The twins tied a piece of string to the furniture on each side
of the hall. The ghost tripped over the string in the dark and fell over. Throughout the weeks
the twins tricked the ghost into annoying him even more. The ghost disappeard so the family
decided that the ghost was gone forever. Next morning, the Duke of Cheshire had come to
stay with the Otis family for a while and he was in love with Virginia. One day they went horse
riding. She tore her dress and went home to change clothes. When she ran to her bedroom,
she went past the ghost’s room. He looked very sad and annoyed. Virginia told him that
tomorrow her brothers would go to school and than he would be quiet. He told her that it
was his job to walk in the hall, to make noises and to frighten people. He also told her that he
never eaten or slept after death. Virginia started crying. He told her that he wanted to sleep
but he can’t. But Virginia can help him. The ghost took Virginia with him to the "Garden of
Death" as it was the only place where ghosts could sleep forever but only if she could politely
ask the Angel of Death. Virginia went with the ghost. Suddenly, the wall opened up into a big
black hole. When Virginia didn’t come down for tea, Mrs.Otis sent one of the servants to look
for her but he couldn’t find her. The whole family started looking for her but no one found
her. Lately, Virginia stepped out of the hole. She told them that these jewels were given to
her by the ghost. Virginia told others to follow her toward the hole in the walls. There she
told everyone the story of Sir Simon. Sir Simon was a bad man. When she was speaking, she
began to cry. The Duke of Cheshire kissed her hand and told her that she was an angel. They
all felt sorry for what they had done to the poor ghost. Everyone was going to say goodbye
forever to the poor ghost who wanted nothing more than to scare people. After a while,
Virginia and the Duke of Cheshire married andshe wore the jewels from the ghost. They loved
each other very much. After their honeymoon, they travelled to visit Virginia’s parents.
Virginia put fresh flowers on Sir Simon’s grave. The Duke asked her about what happened
when she were with the ghost but she kept it a secret.
