The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde.

I The Otis family of North America decides to buy Canterville-castle from

the English Canterville family despite the fact that they warned them that
there was a ghost and that they had decided not to inhabit the castle
anymore due to the consequences, sometimes fatal, of the acts of this ghost.
Hiram Otis: The father of the family and Lucrecia Otis, the mother, have
four children: Washington, the oldest, Virginia, the middle one, and two
twin children. When they arrive at Canterville-Castle they are greeted by
Mrs. Umney, the property's housekeeper.

II Touring the castle, the family finds a blood stain in the library, next to
the fireplace. Mrs. Umney tells them that it is impossible to remove the
stain and that in that place Simon Canterville (the ghost) had killed Eleanor
Canterville. However, Washington pulls out a cleaning stick brought in
from North America and cleans the stain without the slightest problem.
That night the ghost appears in the hallway of the rooms, making their
chains collide, so Hiram leaves his room and offers him a knob of oil for
machines: before this reaction the ghost runs out and screams loudly but
the twins throw pillows at him. head, so the ghost decides to disappear.

III Another day he tries to put on an armor to scare the Otis, but it does not
support the weight of it and falls while putting it on, the noise wakes up the
whole family: The twins throw rubber bands at him from the top of the
ladder while the Mrs. Otis offers you an ointment for your knee scrapes.
This angers him a lot and he decides to disappear until a few days later
where he is determined to scare the whole family, except Virginia, with
whom he will be good. While going up to the room he meets a ghost and as
he has never seen one runs away to his hiding place. The next day he
decides to join the ghost to scare the family, but he realizes that it was a lie,
armed with a broom, a pumpkin and a candle and with a hanging sign that
said that the Otis ghost was the only original and that it was not. imitations
are accepted.

IV Despite the fact that the blood stain continues to appear every night, the
family is struck by its constant color changes until one day the emerald
green stain appears and the family likes it. The family is careful in their
walk so as not to be seen or heard by the family. The twins crossed ropes
through the corridors to make him trip and soaped the wood to make him
fall. To take revenge he disguised himself as a headless ghost and decided
to take revenge on the twins, when he goes up to the room he finds the door
half open and decides to kick it to make a more terrible appearance, as soon
as he does it, a bucket of water falls on his head. The ghost flees to his
hiding place and is ill for several days. When he recovers, Duke Stilton
arrives at the castle to visit, a family to whom he
ghost had a grudge against him and wanted to scare him but gave up at the
last minute for fear of the twins.

V
Riding a horse with Duke Stilton Virginia tears her dress; He returns home
and enters through the back door looking for his mother, believing that he
sees her, he enters a room and actually meets the ghost. Virginia is about to
run but decides to approach and talk to him, after a brief discussion
claiming that he had removed all the color tempers to keep his stain
Virginia takes pity on the ghost and asks him why it is that way, to which
the ghost explains that this is what a ghost should do. Simón asks her for
help to be able to die in peace: she had to cry and pray for him because he
no longer had tears or faith. Virginia accepts, the ghost tells her that she
will hear and see terrible things but that hell can do nothing against her
purity and takes her to a hidden cavern somewhere in the mansion.
VI
Noticing Virginia's absence, the family embarks on a fruitless search. After
dinner, at 12 midnight, amid screams and eerie lights, Virginia appears
from a crack in the wall, carrying a small wooden box full of jewels that
the ghost gave her. He told them that the ghost had repented of his sins and
that she had helped to free him, then he took them to where the corpse was
hidden and through the prison window one of the twins saw that the
almond tree in the courtyard was in bloom; Virginia explained that this
meant that the ghost had been forgiven.

Otis asks the seller of the house to accept the jewelry of his relative Simón
in return, but to allow Virginia to keep the wooden box since she wanted it
and had asked for it. The Englishman denies the request and leaves the
jewels to Virginia. The girl never told anyone what happened in the ghost's
prison, not even her husband, Duke Stilton, but she did thank Simon for
having taught her the value of life, having known death and the reasons
why the love is stronger than death.
