Asian nations like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc.

, have achieved the status of belonging to

the North Divide (rich and prosperous nations)
If you were the head of this country,
1. What are the things you should do for our country to achieve the goal of belonging to the
Global North?

To be part of global north, we must not only rely to traditional inexpensive labor to increase our
economy, this means we have to prioritize the people in the labor force by:

 Diminishing the high Unemployment rate by lowering tax rates which can lead to at least,
if not higher, then decent flow of income from multinational companies to local
markets. This can only be achieved by having proper government and responsible
leaders in the executive departments of the country. By having non-corrupt individuals
in the system of leading, the people in labor force would not be subjected to
inexpensive labor.
 The Philippines is a country having a full capability to stand independently and at the
same time part of North divide, only if we focus more on agricultural capabilities of the
country as we are capable of producing high qualities products only if we are giving
full support to this sector. In accordance to this, full support means empowering
Filipino farmers by giving them foundations to prosper in agricultural assets, this can
be achieved by giving:
 Educational background to pest infestation and diseases
 Proper Irrigation system
 Lowering the high costs inputs for the farmers.
 Increase the price of Palay so that the farmers have their capital returned, which
also pertains to lowering the price of local rice so that the Filipino Farmers can
compete with the imported rice.
These are some of the suggestions we are supposed to provide to our Filipino farmers,
but at the same time as well, we can also provide attention to other sectors, rather than
just the agricultural sector but also the Dairy, Meat, Oil and Gas, Manufacturing
recyclable materials to which can also decrease stress on the environment.
 Free quality educational attainment to students of middle to lower class families. This
would pave way to lowering unemployment rate and inexpensive labor which can boost
our economic status and might achieve our goal to join the Global North.
2. Discuss the elements that could hinder our people to become Global North citizens

There are some factors that hinder the Philippines to be part of Global North and these are:
 First and foremost, the unfaltering and on-going corruption in the national and local
government and executive departments of the Philippines. Until we elect non-corrupt
officials and leaders to run the government, then we cannot be part of the Global North
as the government plays a major role on supporting the Filipino people and their
livelihood.
 Overpopulation due to higher rate of failed family planning and teenage pregnancy.
Overpopulation results to higher demands to products and deficit to food distribution to
lower class families, usually this happens when the unemployment rate surges higher
than usual, and because we are currently under pandemic, the unemployment rate is
goes from 7.4 to 6.5.
 The Philippines once again are under Economic Recession, and according to Steven
Scalia economic recession have the “Factors that cause a recession include high interest
rates, reduced consumer confidence, and reduced real wages. Effects of a recession
include a slump in the stock market, an increase in unemployment, and increases in the
national debt.” With economic recession, we are far from entering the Global North and
until we resolved the factors contributing to this, we are mired to the Global South.

3. Discuss the traits needed by our citizens to become Global North citizens.
In my perception, the traits that our citizens needed to have for us to be part of Global North are
by having:

 The attitude of being cynical when it comes to the government and also the attitude of
looking for the truth and accepting them. Part of being cynical to the government is by
questioning the said system, and also electing responsible and benevolent individuals as
our leaders.
 Just like the leaders we elect, us as well should responsible and cooperative citizens to the
laws and choices they have created. We should know that working together not just to
make our country be part of the Global North but for the sake of the Filipino people to be
relieved from the suffering of unjustified inexpensive labors and poverty.
