Course Synopsis
• This course provides an overview of mechanical non-rotating,
static equipment. The focus is on equipment selection and
integrity of fired pressure vessels and their integration into the
process scheme and control strategy in upstream and midstream
oil and gas facilities. The course addresses code requirements
focusing on ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel code. The material of
the course is applicable to field production facilities, pipelines, gas
plants, and offshore systems.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)
• CLO1 : Identifies and distinguishes the different types of fired vessels,
detailing their components, operation principles, most common
applications and service conditions. [PLO1,C4]
• CLO2 : Construct and organize inspection activities on fired vessels
and generate inspection and maintenance checklist [PLO2,P4]
• CLO3 : Generates workpack and technical close-out report for
operation and maintenance of fired vessel. [PLO3,P4]

Overview….

8
What is Pressure Vessel?
• Pressure vessels are carefully
fabricated, enclosed containers
designed for the purpose of
holding either gases or liquids at a
significantly different pressure than
the surrounding air pressure.
OR
• A container that holds vapours gas
or liquid at a pressure above
ambient. Primarily designed to
internal pressure but also to
external pressure

9
Unfired vs Fired Pressure Vessels
• An unfired pressure vessel is any
type of pressure vessel that is
not fired. This means that they
are not exposed to combustion
or burner.
• A fired pressure vessel is
partially or totally open to
burners and combustion gases.

10
Unfired pressure vessel
• Pressure vessel are container or pipeline
for storing, receiving or carrying the
fluids under a pressure.
• Unfired pressure vessel are storage
vessel, reaction vessel, heat exchanger,
evaporator

11
Unfired pressure vessel
• STANDARD AND REGULATIONS: ASME (American
Society of Mechanical Engineers)
• Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII,
Division 1
