I. Problem-Solving: Solve the following problems. Show your solutions in

proper order. (10 points per item)

1. Obtain the 4th order linear homogeneous differential equation whose roots,
solved using differential operators, are the following: −16 ± i108 and
−14 ± i53 .

2. Solve the initial value problem for the differential equation:

II. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. Determine the general solution of the DE y” – y’ – 2y = 0

A. y = C1e^-2x – C2e^x C. y = C1e^-x + C2e^2x
B. y = C1e^x + C2e^-2x D. y = C1e^2x + C2e^-2x
2. Bacteria grow in a nutrient solution at a rate proportional to the amount present.

strands after 7 hours. Find the time needed for the bacteria to grow to 1,600
strands.

remains after 240 years.
A. 76% C. 87%
B. 77% D. 97%
5. Find the partial derivative with respect to x of the function xy^2 – 5y + 6.
A. y^2 – 5 C. xy – 5y
B. y^2 D. 2xy

Incentive Problem:

1. If the temperature of a cake is 300 deg F when it leaves the oven and 200 deg F is
ten minutes later, when will it be practically equal to the room temperature of 60
deg F say, when will it be 61 deg F?

2. Radiocarbon dating. What should be the 146C content (in percent of y 0) of a

fossilized tree that is claimed to be 3000 years old, when the half-life of the
former is 5715 years?

3. Five mice in a stable population of 500 are intentionally infected with a contagious
disease to test a theory of epidemic spread that postulates the rate of change in
the infected population is proportional to the product of the number of mice who
have the disease with the number that are disease free. Assuming the theory is
correct, how long will it take half the population to contract the disease?
