4.2 SAFETY FEATURES

4.2.1 Heated Roller Safety Cover

The Heated Roller Safety cover has a mirco-switch on the front left side. Opening the Safety cover, stops the
motor (rollers) rotation and halts any feeding or system operation. Ensure the cover is closed to operate the
CF350.

4.2.2 Front Feed Table Safety Latch

The Front Feed Table is removable to

help remove jams, or clean the rollers.
However, the rollers for safety reasons will
not turn when it is removed.

Upon installation of the machine please

check to ensure the Safety Catch is
engaged, or else the machine will not
operate.

Dis-engage the catch to remove the

front feed table for cleaning or to aid the
removal of a misfeed. After cleaning the
machine or removing a paper jam, replace
the front feed table and ensure you re-
engage the safety catch.

4.3 MAIN CONTROLS
4.3.1 Power Switch

Mains Power Switch

The mains power, is controlled by the Power Switch in the rear of the machine, next
to power cord inlet and the exit tray.
Press the Switch to the “I” position, the Power is ON and to the “O” direction to
Power OFF.

Circuit Breaker
The circuit breaker will stop the power supply when the machine suffers from an
overload/over current situation. If this is activated, allow the machine to cool down for
2 hrs then press the protruding part of it.
If this has activated more than 2 times, please contact your supplier..2.2

4.3.2 Paper Guide

The paper guide is used to feed the media straight and should be adjusted to
match your media width.

After the position has been adjusted, secure the guides by tightening the fixing
knobs on the paper guide.

For accurate feeding and to ensure the Auto-Stop sensor works correctly,
central media alignment is an important factor.
If the guide is not straight, your sheets may twist in the machine, and not laminate correctly, or foil
well.

4.3.3 Auto-Stop Sensor

The Auto-Stop sensor is in the centre of the feed table just before the
heated rollers.
The Sensor prevents the machine from continuing to operate without
any media in it. When laminating this prevents glue from the laminate
from contaminating your rollers. When foiling, it ensures you don’t
waste foil.

NOTE: WHEN YOU FINISH LAMINATING, SIMPLY PLACE A

‘WASTE’ SHEET IN THE MACHINE AND ALLOW IT TO ADVANCE
THROUGH, SO THAT THE MACHINE DOES NOT AUTO-STOP ON
YOUR LAST SHEET.

4.3.4 Pressure Adjustment Control

This controls the pressure on main Laminating Roller.
Pressure The pressure can be adjusted by turning the Pressure Control lever. The
Adjustment pressure delivered should be set to the highest, or second highest pressure
Control levels for laminating and foiling.
To adjust the pressure, pull the Pressure Control lever out. Turn it clockwise to
increase its pressure and turn it anti-clockwise to decrease the pressure. After
laminating or foiling, release the pressure on the rollers to prevent them getting
a flat-spot from being left standing under pressure.

Page No: 19
4.3.5 Decurling Adjustment Control

It is normal to have curled laminated results after applying lamination.

This is not caused by a fault in the machine.
The decurling feature is provided to reduce or where possible eliminate curling
on the laminated sheets after single side lamination.
Adjust the decurling bar by using the decurl control as shown in the following
Pictures.
Rotate the decuring control to the right to increase the decurling value and
rotate it to the left to decrease it.

DECURL
BAR

THE AMOUNT OF DECURL CAN VARY DEPENDING UPON MEDIA THICKNESS AND
TYPE. YOU WILL NEED TO ADJUST THIS CONTROL TO MAINTAIN THE FLATTEST
SHEETS POSSIBLE.

IF the tension on the Laminate Film roller (4.2.6) is too high, then as the laminate cools
the sheet will also curl. Too high tension cannot be compensated for, by decurl. So
ensure you have not set too much tension on the film before setting the decurl.

4.3.6 Film Tension Adjustment Knob

The Film Tension Adjustment Knob, is used to adjust film tension on the Input Film
Roller. You may need to adjust the lamination or flaring film tension to remove
wrinkle from the film at the rollers.
Turn the knob to the right to increase its tension and turn FILM TENSION
it left to decrease its tension. ADJUSTMENT KNOB
Note: Be-careful not to apply too much tension, as it is
possible that excessive tension on laminating film will
cause your media to curl up at the ends, beyond the
natural effect that the decurl feature can compensate for.

4.3.6 Rewinder Tension Adjustment Knob

This is used to adjust the tension of foil on the

rewinder.
REWINDER TENSION
Use this handle when foil tension is too loose or ADJUSTMENT KNOB
too tight.
When turning the Foil Tension Control handle to
the right (Clockwise), foil tension increases and
turning to the left, it reduces.

4.4.2 Using the express change rings when changing between rolls

Your ColorFlare CF350 Roll Holder is supplied with some express change rings to aid changing between rolls
of the same size, Use these so you don’t need to move or remove the Core Holder Adapters C.

1. After removing the film shaft from the ColorFlare’s Film

Shaft Holder and Cradle, simply remove the Express
Change rubber ring in one end of the shaft.

Slide the roll of film off over the Shaft Core Adaptor
(whihc you removed the rubber express change ring
from).

2.
Check your new film roll is the same size, then slide
it back OVER the Film Shaft Core Adaptor that your
removed the express change rubber ring from.

3.
Simply re-attach the express change rubber ring to pre-
vent the roll of film from moving on the film shaft (adjust
the position of the Film Shaft Core Adapters if the roll of
film is a different width.)

4.
Re-insert the Film Shaft back upon your ColorFlare
CF350.

4.5 COOLING ZONE FOR FOILING

4.5.1 Cooling Fan overview

To foil the widest range of materials, it may be necessary to apply some additional heat, but if the foil is ‘pulled’
from the sheet (by the pull rollers or rewinder) prior to the toner cooling, then the image may also be pulled
from the sheet and remain on the foil carrier. Therefore, the Intec ColorFlare CF3500 includes a new feature
enabling users to cool the sheet using the Cooling Zone, prior to the foil being pulled from the image.

Cooling Fans

1. You can activate the Cooling Zone, by pressing the FAN

button on the Control Panel. (Note this is only required for
foiling and is not required for Laminating.

4.6 REWINDER SYSTEM FOR FOILS AND HOLOGRAPHIC FILMS

4.6.1 Rewinder System

Most laminating systems only laminate, however the ColorFlare is a dual purpose machine that can both
laminate AND apply decorative metallic foil effects or holographic effects, even spot gloss films.
Foils are complex materials with a number of layers. In principle though there is a CARRIER layer (also known
as the release layer), a low level bonding agent and then a coloured metallic material with a metallic base.
When foiling the toner acts like a glue, adhering to and removing the metallic coloured material and metallic
base from the CARRIER (release layer), once this has happened you need to rewind the CARRIER layer (release
layer) along with any unused foil.

your line of laminated prints from the laminator).

Push the lever at the top of the trimming knife

assembly, and then slide the blade left (or right)
across your media to cut it.

On thicker laminated media, it is

sometimes best to start in the middle,
then cut in one direction, and come
back in the other.

will be changed, and the CF350 speed will be changed the next time you start the CF350 by pressing the
operation button (RUN).

L. "JOB" (JOB Mode selection button)

The purpose of the JOB function is to enable users to save and then recall their commonly used settings.
Each JOB condition stores current roller temperature and speed.

Pressing the JOB [ ▲ ] or [ ▼ ] Recalls the saved JOB conditions (from 1 to 9) of your Intec ColorFlare
CF350.

Current Temperature and Speed can be saved to the current JOB number at any time by pressing the MEM
P button for 2 secs. Saving the current speed and temperature settings to a job number, saves you from
needing to set the job conditions every time you operate your Intec CF350.

For added convenience, When the JOB number is changed. The temp and speed values change and
these values and the JOB number flashes for 2 second. This is notify to you that you need to check if the
changed values are correct, in presently displayed JOB.

P. "MEM" (JOB setting Save button)

When pressing the [MEM] button for 2 secs, the values for temp and speed that are currently displayed are
automatically saved to the currently displayed job number.

M. "STOP" (CF350 Operation STOP button)
When pressing the [STOP] button the Intec CF350, will stop operation. Any rollers turning or feed
occurring will stop, and the the laminate or foil will also stop being pulled through the machine.

Use the [STOP] button when you have finished laminating or foiling your jobs.

N. "RUN" (CF350 START Operation button)

When pressing the [RUN] button, the Intec CF350 will start to operate, it will feed media and laminate/foil
at the speed set on the control panel.

Use the [RUN] button to operate the Intec CF350 and when you are ready to start your jobs and the
control panel displays the READY icon

O. "FAN" (CF350 Cooling FAN Operation button)

The FAN button activates the dual fans in the cooling zone. (See section 4.5.1). When pressing the [FAN]
button the fans will start, and you should be able to hear them operating. Pressing the [FAN] button again
will turn them off.

Use the [FAN] button for Foiling your jobs, this allows you to run the Intec CF350 at a slightly higher
temperature and will better activate your toner, to make foil adhesion improved. The cooling zone,
which uses the fans will then bring the temperature back down to prevent the toner from being
removed from your media as the waste foil is removed.

Q. "REV" (CF350 Feeding reverse button)

Pressing and holding down the [REV] button, will reverse the direction of the feed and pull rollers. While
[REV] is being pressed, the rollers will reverse at the speed of 1, and the CF350 will emit a warning tone
(‘beep’) along with the SPEED display on the control panel flashing. The warning tone (beep) is made only
while you hold down the [REV] button and while the rollers are reversing. The rollers will stop reversing and
the warning tone will stop as soon as you release the [REV] button..

Use the [REV] button to help when removing a misfeed or jam within your Intec CF350.

R. "MEAS" (Check and Measure current Roller temperature button)

Pressing the [MEAS] button will measure and display the current REALTIME temperature of the upper and
lower rollers. Typically the Control Panel display will show the ‘set’ temperature for the rollers. This is the
temperature you are aiming to achieve. When switching the machine on, or removing the machine from
Standby (or changing a job program) it will take some time for the machine to stabilise at the set tempera-
ture.
The Current REALTIME Temperature is only displayed while you hold down the [MEAS] button. In addition,
the values displayed in the TOP TEMP and the BOTTOM TEMP display windows will flash to indicate these
are the actual values, not the set values. As soon as you release the [MEAS] button the display will revert
back to show to the SET temperature.

S. "ST BY" (CF350 Stand By - Power Saving mode button)

Pressing the [ST BY] button will place the machine in power save mode. If your job settings have a job
temperature of above 80oC then, when you press the [ST BY] button, the AUTO-OFF icon is displayed and
the Intec CF350 will reduce the temperature of the heated rollers to 80oC, the machine is now in power
save mode and will not respond to the [RUN] command, until you take it out of power saving mode, by
pressing the [ST BY] button again.

If the machine is not used for a further 30 mins after it has entered ST BY mode, then the roller
temperature will be set to 0, and the AUTO-OFF icon will start to flash on the control panel. To remove
the ColorFlare CF350, at any time from power save mode, press the ST BY button again.

5.3 NORMAL OPERATION - ERROR MESSAGES

5.3.1 "COVER OPEN!!" OR "FEED TABLE LATCH OPEN"

This message is displayed when either the Roller Safety Cover is
open or when the Feed Table’s Safety Latch is open.
The message will appear for approximately 2 secs, flashing on
and off, whenever the [RUN] button is pressed.
To display the message again, simply press the [RUN] button
B again, and the message will re-appear.

The Roller Safety Cover B is designed to avoid users from

burns caused from touching the high temperature heated rollers.
The safety cover should remain closed and the catch engaged
at all times, except when loading films or foils.
If you open the cover, then once the cover has been closed
please make sure the switch/catch is re-engaged.

The Feed Table is designed to be removable to help clean the

rollers or for removing paper jams and feed errors. However, in
operation if the table is removed there is a risk of harm due to
the NIP point in the heated rollers. Therefore the Front Feed
table is fitted with a safety latch, which must be engaged to
operate the ColorFlare CF350.
C If you see the above error message, first check the Roller Cover
Safety Catch B and ensure it is engaged. Then check the
Paper Feed Table Safety Catch C situated under the feed table,
and ensure this is engaged.

During this error state the Intec ColorFlare CF350 can

not be operated. You must take steps to remove the
error before continuing to use the machine.

5.3.2 "PAPER SENSOR ERROR!" - ( Auto-Stop )

The Auto-Stop sensor is designed to prevent the Intec CF350

from operating when there is no media/paper in the ColorFlare.
It will stop the heated rollers and pull rollers from rotating, which
stops laminate or foil being pulled through the rollers when no
media has been inserted into the feed area of the paper tray.

Initially when the paper has run out, the machine will simply
stop. However if you try to operate the machine by pressing
[RUN] with no paper in feed area on the Feeding Table, then this
message will flash on the Control Panel Display for 2 secs. The
machine can not be operated until media has been inserted in to
D the feed area.

6.3 Adjusting for CURL on the substrate
It is perfectly normal that laminating can result in the
substrate being curled after lamination. A large (full) roll of laminate is heavier and creates more
inertia, therefore more tension may be required, compared
This is not caused by a fault in the machine.
to a smaller roll.
The ColorFlare includes a Decurling Feature to help
minimise or eliminate any curling on your laminated results Check the tension on the laminating roller, in the image
after single side lamination. below you can see wrinkles (B) on the laminate over the
Heated Laminating Roller. This tension is too low.
6.3.1 The Cause of Curl
B
When the laminate is stretched over the substrate and
bonded to the substrate (the laminating process), the
laminate will contract when cooling, resulting in a curl. In
addition certain substrates/papers will naturally curl when
heated.
IF the tension on the laminate is very high (the
laminate is over stretched), then the effect of the
curl will be increased.

If the paper is particularly susceptible to curling
with heat, then the effect is increased.
Curl tends to affect SINGLE SIDED lamination C The tension should be adjusted during operation or
only. Typically speaking, any curl is reversed by running of the machine to slowly increase tension so that
double sided lamination (where you manually put the laminate over the Heated Laminating Roller is smooth,

the sheet). So if you plan to Laminate both sides
of the sheet, then you don’t need to worry about
adjusting the Decurl.

6.3.2 Setting the Laminate Tension

The tension applied on the Input Film Shaft will need
to be altered/be different when changing between foil
or laminate and in addition will also be different, when
changing between large or small rolls of laminate or foil.
A little tension is required on the input roll shaft, to prevent

the laminate roll from gathering momentum as it turns, and
getting loose. A loose laminate passing over the heated

7.0 DIGITAL DECORATIVE EFFECTS - FLARING
7.1 Introduction to the decorative effects available by flaring.
7.1.1 Range of effects available
The Intec ColorFlare CF350 is a dual purpose / hybrid product that combines advanced laminating technology with
ground-breaking decorative effect capabilities, all from one machine. Various decorative effects including foiling can be
delivered using a process we call ‘Flaring’.
FILM FLARING techniques, are translucent, that is to say, you can see the image through them. Any image or color is shown
through which is ideal for clear spot gloss to enhance images or holographic effects to grab attention to the original image.
FOIL FLARING techniques are opaque, that is to say, you cannot see the original toner under the foil. i.e. A black toner/
digital image will become solid Gold or the White pigment foil can be used on dark stocks, including black.
In both cases, addition ‘FLARE’ can be achieved as background images and full color elements can be combined with Foil
fusing when the image is protected by Intec’s special overprintable laminate.

7.1.4 GLOSS PIGMENT FOIL Flaring.

FOIL

Similar to Metallic Foil Flaring, GLOSS PIGMENT Flaring,

is an opaque foil with PIGMENTED Particles. These
adhere to your toner image, and replace the toner image
with a GLOSS PIGMENTED FOIL of your choice.

A choice of GLOSS PIGMENT FOIL effects are available,

including:-
GLOSS BLACK (320mm / 12.6”)
SOLID WHITE (320mm / 12.6”)
Foil only sticks to ‘available’ toner. So,
you can actually combine these principles.
i.e. Laminating ‘hides’ the toner so it is not
available to foil. But so does foiling, as it
covers the available toner. This means you
can apply multiple foils to a sheet by using
multiple passes through a printer to add
additional toner image areas to foil.

The below guide assumes you have no media or laminate loaded in your machine. Alternatively, if you have just
finished laminating then changing from Laminating to Flaring is quicker and easier as you do not need to web a
paper leader to the ColorFlare (shown below), instead simply cut the laminate, and attach the foil to the end of the
laminate over the heated roller and simply start foiling.

7.2.1 Setting the Control Panel 7.2.2 Turn on the Cooling Zone Fan

F Foiling is about heat and pressure. You can achieve a

better finish, on a wider media range, if you have a higher
1 temperature. However you risk the toner still being soft
when the foil is removed, therefore using the cooling zone
2 will help cool the toner and avoid this.

B Use TOP TEMP [ ▲ ] or [ ▼ ] (Buttons)

Use the TOP TEMP buttons and set the temperature to

bond to the image then your temp may be
too low, conversely if the toner seems to
come off with the foil, then your temperature
is too high, or your speed too low..

E Check display, for READY

As you power up the machine, the temperature will
be low. The WAIT icon will be displayed during this
time. You can click the [MEAS] button to see what the
temperature is. However, the WAIT icon will disappear
and the READY icon to the left will illuminate when the
unit is ready for Foiling.

9 MAINTENANCE

9.1.1 Cleaning the Rollers

If rollers are not clean:

- laminating films or foils can be stuck to the rollers
- laminated material could be contaminated by a foreign object
- laminated or foiled prints may show a mark, from the dirty rollers.

To prevent these phenomenon, cleaning the rollers is strongly recommend.

Cleaning the rollers

Please wait until the heated rollers have been cooled off below 80C. Then use isopropyl alcohol with
a cotton cloth and to clean the rollers.
You may find removing the front feed table helps.

10.2 LAMINATING MATERIALS

Good lamination is where the adhesive of the laminating film has penetrated the paper. So, that the paper,
image and film have become one. Therefore if you attempt to peel the laminated film from the paper, you
can see the paper is also torn out with the film. (This is known as high bonding strength). Laminating has 3
influencing factors.
1) Paper surface
2) Adhesive
3) Anything that may block the adhesive from penetrating the paper (such as the Image)
Due to factor 3 (the type of Image being laminated) there are 3 main types of Laminate; Litho, Digital Toner or
Digital Indigo.

With Litho Prints, there is no wax or oil in the ink, and the ink has in many cases partially penetrated the paper.
Therefore a standard laminating film, requires very little adhesive.
Basic Litho Laminates: Typically the adhesive is 8% - 12%, and no additives are required. This adhesive
is quite cheap, therefore Litho (OPP) basic laminates are quite cheap. But note, low cost OPP Laminates or
laminates with low adhesive are unlikely to bond well to digital prints.

Digital Laminate for Toner based prints: A toner based digital printer creates an image with an oily surface or
other ingredients (waxes) to achieve their higher print quality. When laminating these digital toner prints, the
normal amount of 8 - 12% of EVA found in regular laminates for litho applications cannot penetrate through
the image and bond in to the paper. So often on cheap laminates you can see the image area ‘silvering’ or
the laminate lifting on high toner coverage image areas. The MegaBond DIGITAL version of Intec’s laminates
contain a massive 28% EVA, (with 18% of Vinyl Acetate ) Plus Intec Digital Laminates also include an additional
“special additive” in the MEGABOND adhesive that penetrates the waxes and oils in toner, enabling the
adhesive to reach deeper into the paper.
Digital Laminate for Indigo Ink: Indigo Ink also requires a 3rd and different adhesive again, Indigo images
are neither a Litho print NOR a Waxy silicon based toner print. This is a kind of “Digital Liquid Ink”. With
heat the ink melts and binds to the laminate rather than allowing the laminate to become one with the media/
substrate. Therefore with Indigo prints, you require higher adhesive levels than the standard Adhesives, plus

Page No: 54
due to the liquid effect of the Indigo Ink, laminates used on Indigo prints require the adhesive to melt at a lower
temperature, enabling binding to the image and substrate prior to the liquid image lifting.
Always make sure you select the right type of laminate for the print you will be laminating.

10.4 FLARING FOIL & SPOT FILM or HOLOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

A good foil is a complex material, with multiple layers. In principle, the colored aluminum particles are
suspended on a carrier film. As toner is heated, it becomes tacky (glue like) and as the foil comes into contact
with the toner, the toner adheres to the foil.
On a good foil, the release layer will let go of the foil very easily and it will adhere to the toner as the toner cools
again.
But foils are very complex and there are many different brands and types.
Please be aware that changing your supplier of foil
can create significant foil quality issues. Polyester Carrier Film
Intec foils have microfine crushed aluminum particles, Release Coating Layer (Often Wax)
But for Intec Foils, it is an

construction foils and use an adhesion multiplier Aluminium (Metallic)
coated to the base of the foil to significantly improve Layer

the toner’s bonding power with the foil. Finally

Adhesive Coating
cheaper foils often use a wax to hold the Colored
Aluminum particles onto the release layer/carrier film. However, the wax is left on top of the foil and can
contaminate high end digital print devices, so Intec premium foils use a light Acrylic co-polymer, that releases
very easily but then leaves a printable surface so the foils can be over-printed.

Always make sure you select the right type of Foil for the print you will be Foiling.
