ABSTRACT

The main objective of the investigation is to study the effect of inhibitor

addition on durability performance of PPC cement mortar exposed to aggressive
corrosion environment. The variables involved in the study are type of cement (53
grade Portland Pozzolona Cement (PPC)), Type of corrosion inhibitor (Sodium
Nitrite (SN) based and based) and dosage of corrosion inhibitor (2% and 5% by
weight of cement).

The strength properties of water cured specimens were studied by

conducting compressive strength test, flexural strength test and shear strength
test. The durability related tests conducted includes water absorption test. All the
tests were conducted as per BIS/ASTM/guidelines prescribed by research
institutions.

It is found that addition of SN based inhibitor in PPC cement mortar exhibits

increased early strength gain as compared to control mortar. There is a marginal
increase in 28 day compressive strength for SN admixed mortar of the order of 5-
15% and as compared to control PPC mortar.

Flexural and shear strength results revealed a significant increase in

respective strength values of the order of 25 - 30% for SN based inhibitor admixed
mortar as compared to control mortar. Addition of SN inhibitor significantly
reduces the water absorption up to 27% as compared to control cement mortar.
