Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Peter Szep

Date: October 3rd 2023
Teacher: Ms. Lcroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is Product Creation Focus
Proposed title for my project: Affordable Housing

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

What are someaffordable housing materials that can help the community?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

Especiallyin the lowermainland, the cost of housing is at an all time high. Even renting an
apartment is difficult to do. My passion is architeccture and hopefully this can help me connect
with the materialistic side of architecture more.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

Other than knowing a little about the housing cost in my area, i know nothing about affordable
materials for housing.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

Currently i am aiming to study architecture in university. By the end of my capstonei wantto

create a 3D model ofa house with affordable materials which connects to the models you
make in univerity.

0
Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

One strength that connecte to a lot of the strengths from the core competencies reflection was
being able to ask for help when i need it. However i always do as much as i can on my own
and only ask for help when needed. I feel like my strongest subject area is creative thinking. I
am able to use the environment around me for ideas and trust my mind to do the work it
needs to. I also can persevere and know that failure is a good thing and something to learn
from.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio

Model House

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

I will start by researching about low cost housing materials and the affect of location on
houses. Especially right now in the vancouver the housing costs are crazy. Then i will study
on construction methods. I will try my best to get in touch with architecture firms in langley and
ask questions about affordable housing to help my perspective. My dad is in the construction
business so i could ask to visit sites and document my obseravtions and take photos. By that
point i have all of the information gathering down and know all i need to know about
architecture, low cost materials, and offordable housing, After that i will focus on my model
house. I need to find out the estimated cost for everything. I will examine the sustainability,
energy efficiency, and how it aligns with the sustainable housing protocols.i will study the
difficulties with low cost housing. I will finally finish my final product of the model house and
cite all of my fererences. If i can i will get my project peer-reviewed to make sure it makes
sense and is credible.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and
skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

I need to be able to know which research papers are credible and relevant for my project. I
plan to use EBSCO, JSTOR, and Google Scholar for collecting information onnected to my
inquiry question. I will need the resources to make the model house. I plan to use glue to keep
the model house from falling apart.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

I will try to connect with architecture firms in the area and ask questions relevalnt to my
project. My dad is also in the constructino business and knows some architects who i can
connect with too. I plan to also take my final product back to them and see if they agree with
what I created.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

It can be difficult to find sources on sites such as JSTOR that has exactly what you are looking
for. Sometimes it can be outdated or from another country and not apply to you.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I hope that researching about thsi topic could help my studies in university and could
eventualy help pther architects too.
