Title:Functions

Content Knowledge - Objective:The students will be able to

determine the function rule when given a table.

Common Core/ISTE Standard:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.F.B.4
Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities.
Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a
description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these
from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of
a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph
or a table of values

Digital Citizen
2b
Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using
technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices

Pedagogy: modelling, independent work, peer tutoring (according

to the website activity types they will discuss the new topic with
their peers)

Assessment Plan: Check off which apply: Detail How

__X___: Informal ____: Formal

__X___: Formative ____: Summative

Notes:
Students will complete a worksheet to determine the function rule
when given a table.

What 21st Century Skills are Students Using?

Critical Thinking: When determining what the x and y values go up by.

Creating: When plotting points as a class they will make a table from
the graph.

Collaboration: Work as a class to plot points and make a table.

Which Blooms Taxonomy? And Which Bloom Taxonomy for Digital?

Create: Students will take a table from a graph of points that were
plotted as a class
Remember: Students will list the points from the graph in a table
Analyze: Students will examine the table and determine the function
rule

Essential Vocabulary: Function, function rule, slope, y intercept

Materials: iPad, teacher created worksheets, SMART Board

Introduction/Engagement: Students will each plot a point on the
graph from Poll Everywhere and the teacher will pick the ones that
create a good function rule. The students will write the points in a
table.

Lesson: (developmental procedures)

● Students will define y intercept and slope and find both of
these for a given table along with the teacher (What is slope?
How do you find it? What is y intercept?)
● Students will complete a worksheet and determine the function
rule (How do we know what the x and y values go up/down by?
How do you show your work?)
● Students will participate in a plickers activity (What is the
function rule for this table? How did you get that?)

Modification: Students will have a scaffolded worksheet that gives

the steps and definitions for determining the function rule

Enrichment: Students will create their own tables, trade with a

partner, and find the function rule
