EMD 2103 – Fluid Mechanics

Assignment 1

Question # 1

A homogenous gate consists of a Quarter Circle Cylinder and is used to maintain water depth of 4
meters. When the water level exceeds 4 meters the pressure increases and starts to open the gate.
The gate is unit length. Find the weight of the gate. (20 marks)

Question # 2

(a) A simple manometer is used to measure pressure of oil (sp. gravity =0.8) flowing in a pipeline.
Its right limb is open to the atmosphere and the left limb is connected to the pipe. The center of
the pipe is 90mm below the level of mercury (sp. gravity =13.6) in the right limb. If the
difference of mercury levels in the two limbs is 150mm. Find the pressure of oil in the pipe.

(b) With the manometer as shown in fig. calculate the difference of pressure in the two tubes A
and B containing water

Question # 3

(a) A circular plate of diameter 2 m which is placed is placed vertically in water in such a way that
the center of the plate is 4 m below the surface of the water. Find total pressure and the
position of the center of pressure.

(b) A circular plate 3 m diameter is immersed in water in such a way that the greatest and least
depths below free surface are 4m and 1.5 m respectively. Determine the total pressure and the
position of the center of pressure.

Question # 4

(a) Explain hydrostatic pressure and head. (10 marks)

(b) A u-tube Manometer measures the pressure difference between two points A and B in a liquid
of density ρ1. the u-tube contains mercury of density ρ2. Calculate the difference of pressure if
a = 1.5 and b = .75m and h = 0.5 m if the liquid at A and B is water and ρ2 = 13.6 ρ1. (10 marks)
