Audience Analysis:

This advertisement promotes notions of what we assumed women were supposed to do.
Mr. Clean advertisement challenges society’s traditional gender expectations through the text
employed, the message was intended for women, especially mothers. This advertisement shows
a mother and her toddler cleaning together. This demonstrates that all women, young and old,
must learn and know how to clean. It then goes on to say, 'This Mother's Day, get back to the
job that really matters,' wants to imply that even on a day when mothers are supposed to be
celebrated, and even have a day off, it is still considered mandatory that they look after the
family and their needs. When viewing this advertisement, viewers may experience humiliation,
embarrassment, or contempt. First and foremost, this advertising is insulting because it
implies that women do not deserve a day off and that resting and enjoying life is meaningless
when you have a house to clean. Second, this commercial is humiliating for men since it
implies that the men in that household are lethargic and incapable of performing household
chores so that their wives or mother can rest. For example, in this advertising, even the
daughter steps up to assist her mother, yet there is no mention of a male arriving to lend a
hand or perform the chore himself. We were horrified by this advertisement since it is
disrespectful to women and their roles at home. In other words, it implies that the role of
women in cleaning is so absolute that they can never delegate it or take a break; the advertiser
even goes so far as to claim that this is happening on Mother's Day. Overall, we dislike this
advertisement since it is sexist and demeaning for guys. This advertisement mostly gives a
negative message to both men and women. First and foremost, this sends a negative message
to females by implying that even on Mother's Day, a day set aside each year to honor moms,
women are not permitted to take a break and must continue to labor for their family.
Furthermore., it appears to convey that even on the most special of every mother, they are still
responsible to clean. This advertisement is also offending to men not only on women because
this tells us that men do not know how to clean and do simple tasks. Overall, cleaning is a basic
life skill and not a gender role.
