 This chapter helps us to understand the basic directions i.e., right and left.

 Basic directions help us to move in a place and know our surroundings, where
places are situated exactly.
 There are four main directions i.e., East, West, North, and South.

 Map- A map is a symbolic representation of a location's specific
characteristics, usually drawn on a flat surface.
 The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west direction.
 North and South are the two opposite directions.
 Directions help us to understand and read a map.
 Ruchira a school girl made a map let’s study it.

 So, let’s locate the handpump, it’s to the right of the Ruchira’s house.
 If we locate her school for that she has to take the first right, then left, then
again, a right, and finally the last right turn to reach the school.
 So, by this, we can locate different places nearby Ruchira’s house and reach
there without getting lost with the help of the directions.

Q 3. What is a compass?
Ans: A compass is a device used to determine direction. A magnetic needle is
mounted on a pivot, or short pin, in a simple compass. The needle, which is free to
spin, is always pointing north. A compass card serves as the pivot.

Q 4. What is a landmark?
Ans: Landmarks are notable or unique features of the land or structures. Human-
made landmarks are magnificent structures created by humans.

Tips to remember
 We can remember the 4 directions using one word, NEWS.
 Here, N - North, E- East, W-West and S- South.
