1)

Figure 1
D1 and D4 diodes are reverse biased. ∴ They act as open switches. Only D2 and D4 are forward
biased, and they act as closed switches. ∴ The circuit can be redrawn as shown in the below
Figure 2.

Figure 2
The current 𝐼 is flowing through the path shown path above.
By applying Kirchoff’s Voltage Law around the loop ABCDEFA,

20 𝑉 − 0.7 𝑉 − 0.7 𝑉 = (100000Ω + 10 Ω + 10 Ω) × 𝐼

18.6 = 10020 𝐼
𝐼 = 0.00018596 𝐴
𝐼 = 185.96 𝜇𝐴
𝑇
2) From 𝑡 = 0 to 𝑡 = 2;

Figure 3

The diode is in its reverse biased mode.

∴ The diode acts as an open switch as shown in the Figure 4.

100 Ω + 1 𝑘Ω
1000 Ω
∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (max) = ( ) . 10 𝑉
1100 Ω
∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 (max) = 9.09 𝑉
𝑇
From 𝑡 = 2 to 𝑡 = 𝑇;

For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 > −0.7 𝑉, The diode is in its reverse biased mode.
1000
∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉
1100 𝑖𝑛
For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 < −0.7 𝑉, The diode is in its forward biased mode. ∴ The diode acts as a closed switch as
shown in the Figure 5.

Figure 5

∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = −0.7 𝑉
The output wave form is shown in the below Figure 6

Assuming that the diodes are ideal,
For the positive half cycle;

For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 < 5 𝑉 For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 > 5 𝑉

D1 is reverse biased and act as a open D2 is reverse biased and act as a open
circuit. circuit.
D2 is forward biased and act as a closed D1 is forward biased and act as a closed
circuit. circuit.
∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 5 𝑉 ∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 5 𝑉

For the negative half cycle;

D1 is reverse biased and act as a open circuit.

D2 is forward biased and act as a closed circuit.
∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 5 𝑉
The output wave form is shown in the Figure 7

4) During the negative half cycle, diode is in its reverse biased mode and act as an open switch as
shown in the Figure 9.

𝑉𝑖𝑛
𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡

Figure 9

∴ 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝑖𝑛
For the positive half cycle, first we need to find the voltage at node A.
By using potential divider method,

Voltage across 100 Ω resistor = ( 100 Ω ) × 12 𝑉

100 Ω+220 Ω

= 3.75 𝑉
Voltage at node 𝐴 = 12 𝑉 − 3.75 𝑉
= 8.25 𝑉
When the voltage at node B = 8.25 𝑉 + 0.7 𝑉 = 8.95 𝑉,
the diode enters its forward biased mode and act as a closed switch as shown in the Figure 10.

𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡

Figure 10
∴For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 > 8.95 𝑉, 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝐵 = 8.95 𝑉
∴For 𝑉𝑖𝑛 < 8.95 𝑉, 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝑖𝑛
The output wave form is indicated in the Figure 11.
