TITLE: DETERMINING SUGAR CONTENTS OF BEVERAGES

RATIONAL: As students attending secondary school, investigating this subject matter is done
as a way to gain knowledge into substances we consume on a day to day basis. Researching these
findings is done to justify the reasons on why most beverages such as juices and soft drinks are
banned in school systems due to their large quantities of sugar. Providing and promoting these
substances to young people can give them early stages of sugar related disease such as weight
gain, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. By knowing these things, minimising the risk is greater
longer term to live happier and healthier lives.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Mary and Marina are sisters and have been arguing about which
drink has the most sugar, juices or soft-drinks. Plan and design an experiment to compare the
sugar content of juices with the sugar content of carbonated drinks to end this argument!

HYPOTHESIS: It is expected that soft drinks had a higher sugar concentration than juice due to
the higher sugar content present in soft drinks than juice.

AIM: To determine the sugar content of juices with the sugar content of carbonated drinks.

APPARATUS: Tripod Stand, scale, gauze, evaporating dish, bunsen burner, measuring cylinder,
ggggggggggggg glass rod.

MATERIALS: Soft drink and Juice.

METHOD:

1. Weight the evaporating dish using the scale and record results.
2. Measure 1 ml of two juices using the measuring cylinder and pour into the evaporating
dish.
3. Weight the juices on the scale, then, turn on bunsen burner and place on the tripod stand
to heat up and constantly stir for 10 minutes with the glass rod.
4. Remove the evaporating dish and place and record the new weight.
5. Repeat step 1-4 and place all results in a table using the two types of soft drink.
6. Calculate all values collected from the experiment.

Variables:

Controlled - Volume of juices and soft drinks, Temperature

Manipulated - Various of materials used (soft drinks and juices)

Responding - Change in weight, texture of substance.

Treatment of Results:

Final Weight - Initial Weight = Difference between values

Expected Results:

Soft Drinks Juices

Soft Drink 1 Soft Drink 2 Juices 1 Juices 2

Initial Weight Final Weight Initial Weight Final Weight

Expected Statement Results: The soft drink will have a higher concentration than juices because
of the higher sugar concentration as well the higher weight content compared to the juices.

Precautions:

1. The volume must be measured at eye-level at the meniscus level.

2. The substance must be constantly stirred to distribute the temperature equally.

Limitation:

1. The petri dish will not be left for 10 minutes due to human error.
2. Concentration of soft drinks and juices cannot be controlled due to different brands

Reflection:

From this experiment, it has been understood the reasons why soft drinks and juices have been
banned from school due to the unhealthy levels of sugar content present to the school population.
Sugar as you can see provides unhealthy diseases such as diabetes and cancer and as a results we
can make better choices as students to better our health
