ODU Student Observation Form

Lesson Topic: Fitness Teacher: Emma Welte Date: 10/17/23

Grade: 7 (2B) # of students in class: 60
Observer: Stacey Mata

Answer the following questions/descriptions for each section:

ACTIVITIES:
Provide a brief description of activities in lesson and the approximate time for each
activity

4 Corner Fitness Run: Students were to perform a specific number of repetitions of an

exercise at each corner. When done, they ran or performed karaoke to the next corner.

STRATEGIES:
Describe the teaching style(s) used

Direct Style/Command

How does the teacher help students internalize essential knowledge? (ask questions,
have student re-state information, give examples)

Emma explained the activity and had a visual aid/diagram drawing of what students need
to do, where they needed to perform activity and pointed out in the gym where these
specific areas were.

How does the teacher encourage critical thinking through emphasizing accuracy and
clarity? (Link information to prior knowledge)
This was not observed.

MANAGEMENT:
Describe how the teacher organized and prepared the classroom prior to class.

Emma had the diagram/visual aid ready before introducing the activity.

What stop/start signals are used?

Whistle to start and stop.

How are transitions between activities organized and implemented?

Transition was fair. Emma needs to project voice more and blow whistle louder so
students can hear her in the gym.

EQUIPMENT:
How is equipment distributed and collected?

N/A for activity but Emma used a whiteboard and dry erase marker for the diagram.

STUDENTS’ BEHAVIOR:
How does the teacher help students develop a sense of comfort and order?
Students were chatty. Students could not hear directions but could see the diagram.

To what extent do students demonstrate that they feel positive about themselves, their
peers, their instructor, and the tasks they are assigned?

Students successfully completed the workout. Many of them performed exercises

incorrectly because they wanted to “stay with their friends.”

A demonstration of each exercise (with modifications for diverse learners) should be

incorporated so students know expectations at each corner.

What characteristics does the teacher possess that makes the entire lesson an enjoyable,
productive experience for the students?

Emma plans creative activities that students can successfully complete.

Additional Feedback: Students need a full physical demonstration of the workout to help visual
learners. Perform each exercise in each zone along with skills to get to the next zone to show
students the exercise expectations. Also show possible modifications for struggling students.

Tell students how long their workout round will be/duration of workout.

Tell students how many repetitions per exercise.

Signs of exercise or skill taped to the wall may be helpful.
