HISTORICAL
The house was built in 1788. It is the oldest recorded example of a 4
residential structure in Vigan.
This is also part of the ancestral house and birthplace of priest patriot 4
Fr. Jose Burgos. Known as Padre Burgos House.
Since it is part of Burgos Museum it is also one of the notable historic 4
structures of Vigan, the capital of the province of Ilocos Sur.
They said that the ground floor of the Burgos Museum is where the 4
bodega located long time ago.

Architectural and Contextual
The house stands as a prime example of the Filipino bahay-na-bato, a 4
two – story structure and is one of the historic buildings in the city. The
lower ground serve as the bodega and the upper floor serve as the
residential or the sleeping area

It is a symmetrical with fine proportions but much smaller and lower in 4

height than those built at a later time.
It is built of brick and wood 4
The main area, rectangular on plan 4
Sliding windows of capiz and wood protect the generous windows, 4
evenly distributed around the house. The openings above the window
transom are secured with diamond-shaped wood slats. The ventanillas
below the windows are protected with wood barandillas of
straightforward design.
The upper floor of the house, accessed by the full-hardwood stairs or the 4
escalera, is a scene of the layers of colonial periods through time.
The thick walls are constructed of bricks plastered with lime mortar and 4
punctuated at regular intervals with windows, protected with awnings
and grill works.

The area features the traditional learning spaces of an Ilocano 4

This historic structure functioned as a storage of the farmers where they 4
can store they farm harvested up until it became part of the Museum
This is also hosted or conducted historical activities exhibitions in line 4
with the mandate of the National Museum of the Philippines to be at the
forefront of promoting the Filipino's heritage history.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Since it is also part of the Padre Burgos house and they’re located in same roof they
have the same architectural structure and features, built in 1786, is the oldest recorded
example of a brick and wood type residential structure built in Vigan. It features simple
architectural ornamentations, and details. It has the characteristic storing area with original
clay roof. It is part also the ancestral house and birthplace of priest patriot Fr. Jose Burgos.
Known as Padre Burgos House. Today, it is maintained by the National Museum and exhibits
ethnic and Ilocano Artifacts.
