Fields – II, Tutorial – III

$⃗ × 𝐴⃗( 𝑑𝜏 = − ∮ 𝐴⃗ × 𝑑𝑎⃗.
1) Show that ∫𝒱 "∇ 𝒮
[Hint: Replace 𝐴⃗ by (𝐴⃗ × 𝑐⃗), where 𝑐⃗ is a constant, in the divergence theorem]

2) Find the exact magnetic field a distance 𝑧 above the center of a square loop of side 𝑎,
carrying a current 𝐼. Verify that it reduces to the field of a dipole, with the appropriate dipole
moment, when 𝑧 ≫ 𝑎.

3) A phonograph record of radius 𝑅, carrying a uniform surface charge 𝜎, is rotating at

constant angular velocity 𝜔. Find its magnetic dipole moment.

4) Find the magnetic dipole moment of the spinning spherical shell discussed in the class.
Show that for points 𝑟 > 𝑅 the potential is that of a perfect dipole.

5) Show that the magnetic field of a dipole can be written in coordinate-free form:
𝜇 1
$⃗?@A (𝑟⃗) = C
𝐵 [ 3(𝑚
$$⃗ ⋅ 𝑟̂ )𝑟̂ − 𝑚
$$⃗]
4𝜋 𝑟 G

$$⃗ parallel to its axis.

6) An infinitely long circular cylinder carries a uniform magnetization 𝑀
Find the magnetic field (due to 𝑀$$⃗) inside and outside the cylinder.

7) A long circular cylinder of radius 𝑅 carries a magnetization 𝑀 $$⃗ = 𝑘𝑠 Q 𝜙S, where 𝑘 is a

constant, 𝑠 is the distance from the axis, and 𝜙S is the usual azimuthal unit vector. Find the
magnetic field due to 𝑀 $$⃗, for points inside and outside the cylinder.
