English Bond
Features
1. The alternate courses consists of headers & stretchers
2. The queen closer is put next to the quoin header to
develop face lap
3. Each alternate header is centrally supported over a
stretcher
4. If the wall thickness is an even multiple of ½ brick ,
the same course shows headers or stretchers in both
front & back elevations. But if the wall thickness is an
uneven multiple of ½ brick , a course shows header
on the face shows stretcher on the back & vice versa

5. The bricks in the same course do not break joints
each other.
6. In this bond continuous vertical joints are not
formed.
7. The no. of mortar joints in the header course is
nearly double than in the stretcher course.
8. A header course should never start with a queen
closer.
9. The queen closers are not required in the
stretcher courses.

10. In the stretcher course, the stretchers have a
minimum lap of ¼ of their length over the
headers.
11. For walls having thickness of 2 bricks or
more, the bricks are laid as stretchers or
headers only on the face courses of the wall.
The interior filling is done with headers.
Flemish bond
Features
1. In every course, the
headers and
stretchers are placed
alternatively.
2. The queen closer is
put next to the quoin
header in alternate
courses to develop
face lap.
3. Every header is
centrally supported
over a stretcher.
4. The bricks in the same
course do not break
the joints
5. In this bond, the short continuous vertical
joints are formed
6. The brick bats are to be used for walls having
thickness equal to uneven no. of half brick.
The Flemish may be divided into two groups

• Double Flemish bond


• Single Flemish bond
Double Flemish bond
1. In this bond , the headers
& stretchers are placed
alternatively in front &
back elevation.
2. For this type of bond,
the ½ bats & ¾ bats are used
for walls having
thickness equal to odd
no. of half bricks
for walls having thickness
equal to even no. of half
bricks, bats are not
required & a stretcher or
a header will come out
as a stretcher or a header
in same course in front
& back elevations.
Single Flemish bond

In this type , the


arrangements are
made like English
bond with the
appearance of the
Flemish bond
Garden wall bond
• This type of bond is used for the construction
of garden wall, boundary wall, and compound
walls.
• This is a one brick wall and its height does not
exceed two meters.
This wall is constructed either in English
bond or Flemish bond
