0 rhythms in everyday life __
___ / 4
It’s natural, isn’t it? Music’s playing somewhere and there’s your foot or your
fingers tapping out the rhythm. Rhythm’s all around us and within us.
The beat of our hearts, the mechanical chug-chug of a printer, rhythm is
everywhere and is at the very heart of music. In almost every culture in
the world there’s some form of drumming tradition – it’s universal, primeval;
from the Vanuatu Women’s Water Music, where percussion sounds are
created by slapping water, to the ancient tradition of Chinese drumming.
And, of course, the drummer’s the very heart of many modern bands,
his steady beat guiding the music, melodies rising, building and developing
around him. It’s the drummer who begins and usually calls the ending.
For me, drummers have always held a special fascination; their ability to
have all four limbs doing different things at the same time is baffling.
And what also never fails to astound me is the amount of energy used and
the total involvement of the drummer in the rhythms he’s creating;
surrounded by the noise that he produces, the drummer often appears lost
in his own internal world.
