Young Adults Program Soars

Day Parade together, taken field trips to watch foreign films, played a few
games at the bowling alley, and more all thanks to the Young Adults
Program—many of which are experiences that they would have never had
before.
Over the summer, Director of Teen Central and Young Adults Program,
Eileen Level created AniTomo, which became the Brooklyn Public Library’s
very first comic convention and was developed by the minds of the Black,
Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community. Through this event,
members of the Young Adults Program were able to learn how their passion
for Anime and Manga could become viable career opportunities.
“Having new found access to expose our members to hot ticketed events
within their interest has elevated DPS’ Young Adults Program from the best
chill spot for ages 18+ to the best place to enjoy and be involved in Japa-
nese Pop Culture,” Level said. “Furthermore, witnessing their reactions,
growth and the impact it has had on them due to their direct involvement
has been a privilege! I’m there experiencing all this alongside them making
this feels like a dream come true as well as a testament to the impact DPS’
Young Adults Program has had on young adults in and around our
community.”

SCSP Members Create Beautiful Holiday Decorations

BY: PAMELA STERN

Fourteen clients
attended the Spring Creek
Senior Partners (SCSP)
Arts and Crafts Holiday
Creativity class. This was
held on Thursday,
December 7th from 11am
to 12:30pm. SCSP’s
volunteer, Rafael Viera
was the instructor for this
class.
In this one-and-a-half-hour class, SCSP’s volunteer, Rafael Viera
instructed the clients with making Christmas Ornaments, and felt
Christmas shoes. The participants used several materials for their
wonderful creations such as: ribbons, plastic figurines, paint and
paintbrushes, glitter, glue and felt materials.
“The clients enjoyed making and decorating their own Christmas
ornaments. Many of them enjoyed singing along to the Christmas
Carols while painting and decorating. The clients were happy to
create Christmas memories at Senior Partners,” said Trichna Parris,
Spring Creek Senior Partners Coordinator of Volunteers and Special
Events.

Education Matters
America Rallies for Afterschool
Programs

(StatePoint) Afterschool programs keep children safe, inspire them to

learn, and give working parents the peace of mind that comes with
knowing their kids are supervised and learning after the school day
ends. There is an urgent need for greater investments in these
programs, as U.S. children and youth try to recover academically and
socially from the pandemic.
Studies show there aren’t nearly enough afterschool and summer
learning programs. For every child in an afterschool program, four more
are waiting to get in. Some 24.7 million U.S. children not in an
afterschool program would be enrolled if a program were available to
them. Additionally, there are significant inequities, with an unmet
demand for afterschool programs significantly higher among Latino and
Black children than children overall.
Each year, “Lights On Afterschool” celebrates the achievements of
afterschool students and draws attention to the need for more
afterschool programs. A million people are participating in more than Starrett Early Learning Center
8,000 “Lights On Afterschool” events around the country this fall. 125 Schroeders Avenue - Brooklyn, New York 11239

academic contests, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)
demonstrations, community service events, debates and discussions,
student art shows and performances, family fun nights, runs and

well-being, the arts, civic engagement, STEM learning, fitness and
healthy eating, cyberbullying prevention and more. Great News!

Have a holly jolly holiday season at Spring Creek Towers (SCT) this
year!

All around the community there are a wide variety of activities to
