Making a Mural with Teen Central

Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines art as the use of creative
imagination to expresses ideas and feelings; however, not everyone is
afforded an opportunity to tap into their artistic side. It is with this in mind
that Spring Creek Teen Central and muralist May Bukowski have teamed
up to break through that barrier.
In February, Teen Central invited Bukowski to work with members,
allowing them to embrace their passions through art. Over the course of
two months, Bukowski and the teens discussed what the Teen Center
means to them, and in doing so, discovered their favorite recreational
activities. After brainstorming, the group then put pen to paper to create
images that represent Teen Central.
“We do an entire month of classroom sessions where they brainstorm
ideas and then I put them all into one design and then we spend a month
painting it,” Bukowski told the Spring Creek Sun.
“It’s to really brighten up the room and then show all the facets of what
they enjoy doing at Teen Central, showing all of their interests and what
they really come here to have fun doing. They come here to get away from
my school and everything and just enjoy spending time with each other.
So, a large component of this project was making connections between
different people,” Bukowski said.
On March 19th, the first 6ft x 15 ft mural was completed. Located in the

signing and the many nuances that make up the community. The teens will
start designing the next mural on May 1st and will be located in the quiet
room where many of the teen girls gather to talk, create podcasts,
participate in photography assignments and discuss beauty.
“We wanted the teens to have access to art, so we invited a muralist to
come and work with the members so that they can bond and build
memories together while also reinforcing art programming,” Teen Central
Site Coordinator, Gavin Edey said. “Our member Darwin really took to the
mural and probably painted about 60% of it.”
Bukowski states that she was really proud of Darwin and how he
embraced the project and was able to paint as well as talk about his day
with friends.
Bukowski likewise says she herself was driven by the need to spread the
love of art to others and sure ensure that individuals of all ages, especially
those in underserved communities, have access to express themselves
freely.
Bukowski is a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology—where she
graduated with her associates and BFA in illustration—and now uses her
experience to create a safe platform for people to express themselves through
art. Her goal is to create art that has a lasting impact, elevating the voices
and perspectives of those who contribute to these murals.

Meet the
Ginger Shot
Man

Spring Creek Towers’ (SCT) own
entrepreneur Mark Forde Jr. has
been making strides to further his
business and healthy initiative “The
Ginger Shot Man.”
Forde has been working at the
Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) for
approximately four years and has
always been passionate about lead-
ing a healthy lifestyle. However, it
was not until the pandemic oc-
curred that Forde realized the need
for healthier options for those who
live in underserved communities.
The COVID-19 pandemic under-
scored this as it proved to be deadly
for those with underlying illnesses
such as heart and lung diseases as
well as diabetes. It was at that
moment an idea struck Forde, who
is also an avid basketball player:
Why not create an affordable nutri-
tious option for his community?
Forde lives by the basketball
motto, “Take your shot,” which he
firmly embraced when he utilized
his stimulus check in 2020 to invest
in starting “The Ginger Shot Man,”
a cold-pressed juice company.
Ginger became Forde’s center
focus when he got extremely sick in
September 2019, a few months shy
from when everything was shut

down due to COVID-19.
“I very rarely get sick, and in
2019, and everything over the coun-
ter was not working. So, a friend of
mine suggested that I buy ginger
and boil some tea, but I’m not a tea
drinker. I went to a juice bar and
tried a shot of ginger [with water]
and literally within seconds I had to
run to the bathroom because it
brought up a lot of mucus and it
cleared a lot of it from my lungs,”
Forde said.
Forde began to research more
about ginger, which according to
medical experts are said to be a root
vegetable filled with nutrients and
antioxidants that have several
health benefits especially for the
stomach (constipation, bloating,
and intestinal gas).
“When I know something works, I
incorporate it into my everyday life,”
Forde said.
He began using a juicer and
started making small shot bottles
using for himself and others to try
at the BSC. It was then that Forde
realized the magnitude of what he
stumbled upon. In food desert com-
munities that have a plethora of
fast-food options but limited nutri-
tious items, selling small shot of
ginger became a much-needed
oasis.
Since then, Forde has been forti-
fying and legitimatizing his busi-
ness, making sure everything is
trademarked and up to Food and
Drug Administration standards
(FDA).

During his journey, he even
taught students in Teen Central to
“take you shot” and learn how to
start their own business in 2022.
Last month, on March 30th,
Forde became a sponsor at NYC
Mayor Adams’ Women’s Health
Summit where he introduced his
Ginger Shot drinks to the admi-
nistration and explained its bene-
fits. Forde was one of a hundred
experts who spoke at the “Women’s
Health Agenda” which is focused on
dismantling the inequity of female
health options from chronic dis-
ease, birth equity, mental health,
and reproductive health.
Forde believes in empowering
others to lead a healthy lifestyle,
and he hopes that the Ginger Shot
Man can lead them on that journey.
Some people think that Forde
should create a storefront to sell his
ginger shots, but Forde is adamant
on making his drink available for
everyone no matter where they are.
“A part of the reason I don’t want
a storefront is that this was started
when a lot of businesses were
closed, so to help people when they
couldn’t get, I’d get it to them,”
Forde said.
The next step in his journey
however is getting his business FDA
approved so that he can use a
factory to mass produce his cold-
pressed Ginger shots using the
most state-of-the-art environ-
mentally friendly machinery. Forde
must send samples of his ginger
shots to get tested by the FDA;
however, this costs about $16,300.
It hasn’t been an easy journey,
and despite writing over 20 grants
Forde has not been able to garner
the funds needs to pay for the FDA
licensing. He has now created a
GoFundMe to help kick-start the
money needed to start the FDA
approval process.
“Food is meant to be enjoyed, not
kill you. There has to be a balance.
I want to do more to let people
understand more about healthy
eating and making this more
interactive,” Forde said.

Each Earth Day, there is a theme to call attention to an
environmental issue or goal, to bring people together to inspire
change when we all think of the planet. For 2024, the Earth Day
theme is “Planet vs. Plastic”.
What does Earth Day celebrate?
Earth Day is about celebrating the progress of the environmental
movement and its efforts to help the planet.
How to celebrate Earth Day 2024?
You can help clean a beach, pick up litter in cities and
neighborhoods, or help restore natural habitats by planting trees,
bushes and pulling weeds.
If you need to see one of our NORC Nurses or Social Worker, please

The Bright Colors of Holi during the 36th Annual Phagwah Parade

Holi burst into New York City with an explosion of colors

during the 36th Annual Phagwah Parade in Richmond Hill,
Queens on April 7th.
The festivities began on 133rd Street and Liberty Avenue
where revelers gathered to watch a dance performance and
purchase their color powder packets. Members of the NYPD
were present to not only keep a watchful eye over the celebra-
tion, but also participated in the fun.
Hundreds of attendees lined Liberty Avenue with multi-
colored powder in hand, ready to toss it (or gently rub it) onto
family, friends, and even passersby. This act symbolizes rever-
ence, love, and respect toward each other as well as marking
the start of a happier, brighter spring.
The parade route culminated at Phil Rizzuto Park for a
cultural festival, featuring speeches from elected officials,
religious leaders, and traditional Hindu performances.

See New Yorkers Watch the Solar Eclipse

On April 8th, millions of New Yorkers halted the usual hustle

and bustle of city life to watch a total solar eclipse that was visible
in North America, Mexico, and Canada.
A solar eclipse is when the Moon blocks the sun and earth as it
passes through, appearing as if it is dawn or dusk. While New York
was not exactly in the path of totality—the city was not covered in
complete darkness like in Mexico—it was still a sight to behold.
Iconic locations throughout the five boroughs, such as Times
Square, Radio City Music Hall, Bryant Park, Union Square, the
Brooklyn Bridge, LIC boardwalk, the Top of the Rock, and other
areas were jam packed with spectators peering through their solar
eclipse glasses.
In Spring Creek Towers, residents donned their solar eclipse
glasses and watched the sun from their balconies, windows, the
school playground and the numerous winding pathways in Spring
Creek Towers.
The event began at around 2:10 p.m. where the edge of the moon
began to cover the sun. The maximum view where the sun was
halfway hidden occurred around 3:25 p.m.

Did you know: The next solar eclipse won’t be visible in the United
States until August 23rd, 2044. According to NASA, the Sun’s
outer atmosphere is not visible for the naked eye; however, during
a solar eclipse this area becomes visible. Additionally, once the
moon completely blocks the sun during totality, it is okay to
momentarily remove solar eclipse glasses. The total solar eclipse
lasted for about 4 minutes.

the “Father of Earth Day”, initiated
and promoted environmental ac-
tions and activities beginning in
1962. He convinced then President
John F. Kennedy to tour the
nation in support of environmental
concerns. This initial effort did not
spark national concern at a
political level to effect change.
But Senator Nelson continued
his pursuit of increased environ-
mental concern and action. He
proposed a National Earth Day in
1970. It was to be the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up
the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda”.
On April 22, 1970, the timing was right and the first Earth Day protest
received astounding support.
On that first Earth Day, an estimated 20 million Americans took to the
street in support of the environment and in protest harmful environmental
practices. Never mind that “protests” were in vogue at the time. This effort
produced a lasting impact on the environment and brought about greater
awareness that our planet had limited resources, and that our eco-system
was self contained and finite. The things we are putting in the air, water
and earth were impacting us.

Did you know? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was formed
as a direct result of this first Earth Day in 1970.

greenest toilet varieties?

When thinking of ways to live a
greener lifestyle, toilet paper isn’t
usually the first thing people think
of, but the average American uses
more than 50 pounds of tissue pa-
per per year. Like other paper pro-
ducts, toilet paper is typically made
from trees. As consumer demand
grows, trees continue to be cut
down at alarming rates. Between
1996 and 2015, loggers cut down
around 28 million acres of wood-
land, an area roughly the size of the
state of Ohio. Finding alternatives,
or ways to cut down on paper use, is
a great way to limit your impact on
the environment.
As new companies emerge and
come out with new toilet paper op-
tions, the Natural Resources De-
fense Council (NRDC) has come up
with a system to grade how sus-
tainable certain toilet and tissue
paper brands are. The grades rank
from A+ to F and account for a
variety of factors like the percentage
of recycled material used in the
toilet paper. A grade of A+ means
that the toilet paper was made
entirely of recycled materials, used a
chlorine-free bleaching process, and
had the highest percentage of post-
consumer recycled paper. Post-
consumer recycled means that the
recycled materials came from
products that had reached the end
of their life cycle and would have
otherwise ended up in landfills.
When going green it’s also smart to
look for “processed chlorine free”
papers over bleached and “elemen-
tal chlorine free” papers, because
the latter can emit cancer causing
dioxins into the air and water when
they are processed. Toilet paper
brands that were awarded an A+
grade by the NRDC include 365 by
Whole Foods Market, Green Forest,
Natural Value and Trader Joe’s.
A grade of A means that the paper
brands contain 100% recycled ma-
terial, but a lower percentage of
post-consumer recycled paper.
Some good A rated toilet papers
include Seventh Generation Extra
Soft & Strong, Who Gives a Crap,
and Everspring. The B and B+ grade
is typically reserved for the emer-
ging market of bamboo-based paper
brands. While bamboo is less en-
vironmentally friendly than recycled
material, it is still greener than
using pure forest fibers. The other
catch is that the largest bamboo
producers are in China, which does
not have the best track record when
it comes to environmental and labor
rights. Amazon Aware and Caboo
are both B rated bamboo toilet
paper brands.
Paper brands with a grade of D or
F rely entirely, or almost entirely, on

tonelle, Angel Soft and Scott 1000.
More sustainable toilet paper is
typically more expensive than the
lower rated brands and not every-
one can afford to change their life-

ways to live greener. One option is to
simply reduce the use of toilet
paper, paper towels and facial tis-
sues. Use what you need, but avoid
being excessive. It’s not like paper
just grows on trees!

Passover, also known as Pesach, begins at sundown on April 22nd,

and is the celebration of the freeing of the Jews from Egyptian rule
around 3000 years ago. At the time, the Israelites were enslaved by the
Egyptians ruler Pharaoh Ramses II. God instructed Moses to go to the
Pharaoh and ask for freedom for the Jews. According to the Bible, his
plea of “Let my People go” was ignored despite Moses’ warning of
punishments by God if the Israelites were not freed.
God then sent ten terrible plagues upon the people of Egypt. The

Bang Yong-guk US Tour Kicks off in Brooklyn

On April 5th, South Korean rapper and singer Bang Yong-guk of YY
Entertainment kicked off his United States tour at Warsaw in Green-
point, Brooklyn.
Hundreds of adoring fans braved the cold as they lined the sidewalk
outside of Warsaw, some arriving at least 12 hours before the concert
was set to start just to ensure they could get an up-close and personal
view of Bang Yong-guk. Many of these adoring fans describe Bang Yong-
guk as one of the most influential artists both with his musical style and
creativity in the industry.
“I am happy that I am back here in Brooklyn,” Bang Yong-guk told
the crowd, “Thank you, New York City is the first stop
in the tour.”
Prior to the tour, the 36-year-old star released his
EP “3” on March 31st, featuring six songs he wrote
and composed all of which he performed during his
Brooklyn show much to the delight of fans.
As he rapped to hits “Movimento” and “Bad,”
attendees held their Matoki light sticks tightly—a
symbol from his days as leader of the South Korean
group, B.A.P—as they screamed whenever Bang

“I am so happy this tour is right after my new album came out,” Bang
Yong-guk said holding up a signed version of his album. “I am so glad
that all of the new songs from the new album will be played. In the new
album I tried to contain what I really have to talk about…I sincerely
encourage you guys to also take on a challenge and go outside of the
comfort to zone to move forward step by step in your lives.”
For this tour, some lucky fans were able to purchase a Meet and Greet
package coordinated by MyMusicTaste affording them an opportunity to
take a selfie with Bang Yong-guk and receive a signed post card and
exclusive photocards.
“The concert was so fun! Everyone was vibing to the
music and singing along. I was happy to see him come
back to NYC to perform and do the things he enjoys,”
Melina, an avid fan said.
The next stop on Bang Yong-guk’s 11 city US tour is
tonight at the Marquee Theatre in Phoenix on April
19th, the House of Blues in Vegas on April 21st, Har-
low’s in Sacrament on April 23rd, Observatory North
Park in San Diego on April 26th, and ending at the
Vermont Hollywood in Los Angeles on April 28th.

Pop Ups Celebrate TXT’s “Minisode 3: Tomorrow” Album Release

South Korean band Tomorrow X
Together, also known as TXT, burst
to the top of Billboard 200 charts
after their comeback debut of
“Minisode 3: Tomorrow” hit the No.
3 spot, selling over 107,000 albums
this month.
In celebration for the release of
“Minisode 3: Tomorrow,” six KPop
Nara stores throughout the United
States (New York, New Jersey,
Chicago, Woodfield, Michigan, and
Seattle) hosted a “TXT Weekend” for
fans from April 5th to April 7th.
The TXT Fan base, affectionately
known as Moa, were able to pur-
chase various version of the new
album and receive a free cupsleeve
as well as invited to participate in a
trading card event and in-store fan
project where attendees shared
what TXT and being a Moa means
to them. Many of them stated how
much they enjoy the group’s posi-
tive influence as well as the stability
band has provided fans when times
get tough. Moa’s shared that TXT’s
free expression of youth and hap-
piness surrounds them with much
needed love and protection.
High schoolers Natalie Y. and
Cindy C. excitedly clutched onto
their “Minisode 3: Tomorrow,” tell-
ing the Spring Creek Sun that they
were also gearing up for TXT’s June
1st concert at Madison Square Gar-
den, which will be their first concert
to ever attend.
“I like their visuals, they are so
good,” Natalie Y. said. “When I look
at them it’s like wow, they are glori-
ous. I also absolutely love their vo-
cals. The song “Miracle” is my favor-
ite in this album.”
TXT members: Yeonjun, Choi
Soo-bin, Beomgyu, Huening Kai,
and Taehyun first debuted in
March of 2019 under Big Hit Music
(formerly known as Big Hit Enter-
tainment), and five years late the
group have hit milestone after mile-
stone as they become the first K-
Pop group to earn their 10th time
on Billboard’s 200 chart.
“They are really handsome and
funny. I watch their shows and they
are just so talented; they can dance
and sing really well. They are just a
really good group. I love their songs
and their concepts,” Cindy C. said.

Constant Aleve and
Ibuprofen
Consumption Can
Cause Damage

My husband, age 70, had been
diagnosed with osteoarthritis in
his neck, for which he would take
Aleve to relieve his discomfort
when needed. Just before Christ-
mas last year, his back began
hurting so much that he went to
his doctor, who said to get up and
move more. (We have always
exercised and remained active in
life, but he did slow down due to
his pain.)
My husband then added ibupro-
fen to the Aleve he was already
using. His doctor said that the
pain is due to osteoarthritis in
his mid-back area. Apparently,
there is nothing to do for it but
take Extra Strength Tylenol at
the recommended dose. Ibupro-
fen or Aleve isn’t recommended
because it causes liver and kid-
ney damage. So, we bought Ty-
lenol, and he used this medica-
tion instead of his usual. But his
pain only got worse.
So, this morning, he switched
back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is
what helped before and is helping
again now. In addition, he is
using a drug-free Aleve Direct
Therapy pad that uses waveform
technology. He also uses Icy Hot
pain relief cream and a heating
pad. These reduce his pain, but
his back continues to hurt since
before the holidays.
Our question is, should he use
Aleve and ibuprofen instead of
the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to
help? He has actually used Aleve
for a very long time. He just had
his blood tested, and the doctor
said his liver and kidneys are
good. Is there anything more we
can do to relieve his osteo-
arthritic pain? It is hard to see
my husband in so much dis-
comfort when he was previously a
very active, pain-free man.
Dr. Roach says: Osteoarthritis in
the neck is a common and painful
condition, and there are not always
good treatment options. In terms of
medicine, anti-inflammatory medi-
cines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil
and many other brands), can be
very helpful for some people.
However, taking both doesn’t
improve pain relief. It does increase
the risk of toxicity, so he should
never take two anti-inflammatory
medicines — choose just one.
Tylenol helps some people, but in
my experience, most people do
better with anti-inflammatories
instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does
have a smaller risk of side effects.
In addition to liver and kidney
problems, Aleve and similar medi-
cines can cause stomach problems,
ranging from mild upset to life-
threatening ulcers; though, this is
uncommon with over-the-counter
doses. I often recommend a trial of
Tylenol to see if it is as good as the
anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not
for your husband, he should tell his
doctor this, and it seems reasonable
for him to go back to taking Aleve
alone. However, I can’t tell you to
disregard his physician’s advice.
Some people benefit from Tylenol on
top of Aleve.
Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve
Direct Therapy pad uses electricity
to relieve pain without medicine. It’s
fine to combine this therapy with
medicines. Creams — whether they
are anti-inflammatory, menthol and
camphor, or topical anesthetics —
provide some relief, but they tend to
be better on the hands, wrists and
knees than the neck. Though, they
still may be worth trying in
combination with medicines.
In more severe cases, injections
can be used before considering
surgery.

Jane? You probably already know
her cousin, Sloppy Joe. They may
be similar, but here’s how you can
tell them apart. This Sloppy Jane
recipe not only offers a healthier
alternative to its cousin, the Sloppy
Joe, but it also keeps your wallet
happy by being cost-conscious
while creating mouthwatering
sandwiches that won’t weigh you
down.
What sets Sloppy Janes apart

1 pound 90% lean ground turkey
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons granulated garlic
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon chili powder
Optional: 1/8 teaspoon cayenne
pepper, or more to taste
For serving:
4 hamburger buns
1/2 cup shredded cheese
Optional: bread and butter pickles
and/or pickled jalapeno slices
Add the olive oil to a skillet over
medium-high heat. Add the onion
and pepper blend. Cook for 5-7
minutes until they release most of
their moisture and are cooked
through. Push the peppers to the
side and add the turkey. Cook for 5-
7 minutes until browned and no
longer pink. Add the salt, pepper
and garlic, and stir it all together.
Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl stir
together the tomato sauce, mus-
tard, brown sugar, vinegar, chili
powder and cayenne, if using.
Add the sauce to the turkey mix-
ture and simmer for 5 minutes or
until Sloppy Joes are thickened to
your liking, making sure to stir
frequently. Adjust seasoning, if
needed.
Serve hot on toasted buns. Top
with shredded cheese and pickles.
Pair this with a crisp green salad
or crunchy carrot and celery sticks
for a well-rounded meal. Add some
French fries or onion rings to really
make the kiddies (and kids at heart)
happy.
And for those who prefer a set-it-
and-forget-it approach, this slow
cooker method ensures tender,
flavorful Sloppy Janes with minimal
effort. Just brown the turkey, toss
all the ingredients in your slow
cooker, cook on high for 2-3 hours
or on low for 6 hours and let the
slow cooker work its magic.
If you’d like to stretch this recipe
to add extra servings, there are
several affordable options. First,
you can double the veggies. Or you
can just add more chopped onion. A
nice, big, chopped sweet onion
would be delicious. A can or two of
beans would be a good addition,
especially pork and beans or baked
beans. Also, check your crisper
drawer and add any peppers, to-
matoes, celery or shredded carrot.
These sandwiches are sure to
become a household favorite. So
tuck in your napkin, because these
are delightfully sloppy!
