the spotlight on a designer who was showcased during the
Global Fashion Collective—Irene de la Vega.
Irene de la Vega’s fashion house is located in Culiacán
Rosales, Sin. Mexico, where she has garnered a reputa-
tion for creating original designs cultivating a luxurious
sensuality to evening wear. Vega’s fun flirty outfits are not
the usual, very much basic evening gowns you see on
runway shows. Her attire stands out with asymmetrical
details, rich textures, and complementary colors. In short,
Irene de La Vega’s outfits are a daring sense of expression
taking fashion to the next level.
At the Global Fashion Collective I runway show, Irene
de Vega showed off her evening gowns flair with a variety
of styles, from sheer tops, illuminating satin dresses, ruf-
fle skirts, and sequence party attire. Each of these designs
could be worn to a gala, cocktail party, or even a night out
with friends. She honored her Mexican roots by displaying
rich colorsto each of her outfits, which is a must in
traditional Latin dresses.

New York Fashion Back in Action

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) once again took to the runways for hybrid shows from September 8th
to September 12th. The glitz and glamour of the occasion welcomed many influencers, fashionistas,
journalists, and other enthusiasts back to the streets of New York City donning their most fabulous
attire. It also paved the way for a more inclusive platform, allowing designers to host creative virtual
shows that everyone can enjoy.

summer sunshine to the fall show. SARAL ZENS, a women’s wear from China
depicted high-end sophisticated designs in stark whites and blacks. Each
outfit exuded a sense of power with it’s solid tones. The final designer to be
featured was Blue Tamburin from Korea. For the Spring Creek Sun, this last
runway show stole the spotlight with its dramatic attire honoring both Korean
culture with hints of American styles.

How Single-Use Plastics Are Driving Climate Change

single-use plastic is a major driver
of climate change and is harmful to
human health — even when it’s
recycled? According to a new
report, leading consumer goods
companies are driving the expan-
sion of plastic production. And by
doing so, are threatening the global
climate and the health and safety of
communities around the world.
The Greenpeace USA report, “The
Climate Emergency Unpacked:
How Consumer Goods Companies
are Fueling Big Oil’s Plastic Expan-
sion,” exposes the business links

For centuries, North Atlantic
right whales were aggressively
hunted for their meat and their oil,
which was used to keep lamps lit
and to make soap. These iconic 50-
foot long dark blue and white
whales were even named the “right”
whale to hunt, as they were often
found near the shore, can only
swim slowly (six miles per hour),
and float when killed. But by the
early 1900s they had become a rare
sight and in 1935 the League of
Nations, a precursor to the United
Nations, banned hunting them.
But the population failed to re-
bound, and in 1970 the U.S. added
the Northern right whale to its new
Endangered Species List.
Despite these protections, only
400 remain, and human inter-
actions still present the greatest
threat, with entanglement in
fishing gear and vessel strikes the
leading causes of mortality. Since
2017, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Association (NOAA)
has documented 34 dead whales

between the world’s largest con-
sumer goods and fossil fuel
companies. Without this trans-
parency, the report’s authors say
that consumer goods companies
are largely able to avoid accoun-
tability for environmental or human
rights violations committed by the
companies that supply plastic for
their packaging.
“The same well-known brands
driving the plastic pollution crisis
are helping fuel the climate crisis,”
says Greenpeace USA global
plastics project leader, Graham
Forbes. “Despite their best efforts to

strikes. In an attempt to conserve
and rebuild the population, NOAA
announced new regulations in
August 2021 on the Maine lobster
and Jonah crab industries, includ-
ing the closure of large parts of the
Gulf of Maine to lobstering between
October and January and requiring
more traps per trawl to reduce the
overall number of lines in the
water.
Not surprisingly, the fishing in-
dustry isn’t happy. “This is incre-
dulous,” says Crystal Canney,
executive director of Protect
Maine’s Fishing Heritage Founda-
tion (PMFHF). “The whale deaths
are not in Maine at the hands of
Maine lobstermen...instead of
saving right whales, what this
appear climate-friendly, consumer
goods companies are working
alongside the fossil fuel industry to
expand plastic production, which
could lock the world into catas-
trophic emissions levels and a
planet warmed beyond saving.”
Indeed, over 99 percent of plastic
is made from fossil fuels, and
according to industry estimates,
plastic production could triple by
2050. This projected growth would
increase global emissions from the
plastic life cycle by over 50 percent
on 2019 levels by 2030, equivalent
to nearly 300 coal-fired power
plants. This is the same timeframe
that the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change has warned
human caused emissions must fall
by nearly 50 percent to limit
warming to 1.5 degrees C.
The report also details how
single-use plastics hurt people who
live on the frontlines of its pro-
duction. Plastic production has
been linked to health issues like
cancer and asthma, and these
impacts are disproportionately felt
by poor communities and commu-
nities of color.
Despite the many adverse im-
pacts of single-use plastic packag-
ing, the report finds that consumer
decision has done is endanger not
only the livelihoods of many of our
lobstermen and women but also
their lives,” she adds.
The Maine Lobstermen’s Associa-
tion (MLA) is also apprehensive
about the new regulations. In a
statement, the group maintains
that a historic number of right
whales have died in Canadian
waters over the past five years and
yet Canada has not implemented
protections comparable to the U.S.
Furthermore, the latest scientific
evidence points to a change in right
whale migration patterns, away
from Maine waters and into
Canada and other areas. “Accord-
ing to NOAA Fisheries, the Maine
lobster industry has not had a
documented entanglement with a
North Atlantic right whale in over
17 years and has never been

opposing legislation that would
restrict its production
“The world’s largest brands are
working with the fossil fuel indus-
try to use recycling as a smoke-
screen. Recycling will never be the
answer to the plastic pollution
crisis,” says Forbes.
Greenpeace is calling on con-
sumer goods companies to urgently
move toward systems of reuse and
package-free products, to phase
out single-use plastics and to be
more transparent about their
plastic and carbon footprints. To

Husband Is
Always Tired

My husband is tired all the
time. He functions, but frequent-
ly has to sit to recoup his energy,
even after a shower.
He is diabetic and has been for
over 10 years. He does not take
insulin and manages to keep his
A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs
207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1
inch tall and 75 years old.
His bloodwork always comes
back normal, and a nuclear stress
test came back negative. We have
discussed this chronic fatigue
with our family doctor. His only
explanation is possibly low te-
stosterone (the low end of
normal).
We know that some if not all of
his medications list fatigue as a
side effect, but we cannot per-
suade our doctor to do further
tests. My husband does have an
appointment with a cardiologist
in May for a consultation and any
suggestions, and also a checkup
in six months with our family
doctor.
My concern is his medications
and the fact that they are ge-
neric. I have read many stories
about generic drugs and problems
with their effectiveness.
Dr. Roach says: Fatigue, which is
the sensation of feeling tired, is a
nonspecific symptom and a com-
plaint that’s commonly heard by
general doctors. It can be related to
many diseases, as disparate as
multiple sclerosis to heart failure,
anemia to depression, and chronic
infection to sleep disturbances.
However, your husband notes a
severe intolerance to exertion,
which makes me suspect systemic
exertion intolerance disorder, also
called myalgic encephalomyelitis or
chronic fatigue syndrome.
Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or
concentrating, and having worse
symptoms withstanding also go
along with this diagnosis. There is
yet no lab test for confirmation. The
other causes and testing for those
that make sense after a careful
history and exam.
Diabetes, when not well controll-
ed, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m
not so concerned with generic medi-
cations as I am about too many or
the wrong ones, so a careful review
of medications is appropriate.
I have previously recommended a
graded exercise program for this
condition; however, the study that
led to this recommendation had
several significant issues; many
people will actually have worsening
of their post-exercise fatigue, so
exercise must be used very cau-
tiously and on an individualized
basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy
has had some benefit, but we
desperately need better treatments.

In a recent column, you said that
using peroxide in the ear is a bad
home remedy. Would you please
expand on this subject? My
children grew up with me using
peroxide to clean excessive wax
from their ears, and they now use
the same remedy on my grand-
children.
Dr. Roach says: Most earwax does
not need to be removed. It should
be removed only when there are
symptoms (such as poor hearing,
ear pressure or pain, and some-
times itchiness or dizziness), and
when it is clear that the symptoms
are coming from excess earwax.
This requires a look in the ear, since
similar symptoms may come from
infection.
Hydrogen peroxide is too harsh to
put on skin. Doctors may use it to
irrigate the ear canal while looking
into the ear, but it is diluted,
usually 1:10. Over-the-counter ear-
wax preparations, such as carba-
mide peroxide, may also be recom-
mended once the diagnosis is clear.

Older Adults Shouldn’t Delay Preventive Health Care

Colorectal screening. Like breast
cancer, colorectal cancer risk
increases with age. Screening tests
can find precancerous polyps early
so they can be removed before they
turn into cancer. The USPSTF
recommends screening for adults
age 45 to 75. Medicare covers the
cost of a screening colonoscopy
once every two years for those at

Breakfast Boats
Make Brunch a
Breeze

You know why we love brunch
dishes so much? Because they’re
so versatile. They work for break-
fast, brunch, lunch or breakfast-
for-dinner. Also, most are easy to
prepare and very inexpensive,
making them perfect for stress-free
entertaining or a lazy Sunday at
home.
This breakfast-boat technique is
especially drool worthy. If French
toast and quiche had a love child
it’d be a breakfast boat. You’re
basically baking a quiche inside a
loaf of bread. Along with the salty,
savory sausage, the eggs soak into
the bread as it bakes, making a
creamy custard while the bread
crust gets all crispity-crunchity. It’s
just crazy delicious. It smells
amazing as it cooks and looks
gorgeously rustic on a platter.
As with many ideas I share
through Divas On a Dime, this is
an adaptable technique rather than
a single recipe. You can adjust the
ingredients to suit your family’s

Apple Cider Donuts

Prep time: 30 Min  cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg in another bowl.
Serves: 12
Ingredients
1 cup of apple cider
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of solid vegetable shortening
2 large eggs
1/2 cup of buttermilk
3 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp iodized salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
enough vegetable oil or shortening to fill 3 inches of a frying pan
1 c cinnamon/sugar mixture to coat donuts

shaking them in the sugar. A few of ours broke (still tasty, just not
as pretty). We’d recommend placing the cinnamon sugar in a bowl

This makes it difficult to offer exact
quantities to fill your loaf or give an
absolute baking time.
You can use any kind of unsliced
loaf (French bread, whole wheat,
Italian bread) as long as the crust
is, well ... crusty. Day-old is prefer-
able because it better absorbs the
eggs, is less likely to leak and is
super affordable. If you fill your loaf
with the egg mixture and it looks
skimpy, add a couple more eggs.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings
Prep: 20 minutes

horizontally slice the top inch from
the loaf of bread. Scoop out most of
the center of the bread. Keep at
least an inch away from the sides to
avoid damaging the outer crust.

you remove.)
7. Spoon the sausage and veggie
mixture into the bread, distributing
evenly, and top with the cheese.
Slowly, pour the egg mixture over
the sausage and let it percolate
through toward the bottom.
