and pencil-free drawing. Here is a brief look at the history and major
XJMMOFWFSBTLGPSQBZNFOUGPSUIJTSFRVFTU

milestones of this iconic red-framed drawing toy:

• 1955: French electrician, André Cassangnes came up with the idea to

create a drawing toy when he made pencil marks on a decal and noticed
that the image transferred to the opposite face.
• 1959: Paul Chaze, owner of a smaller plastic injection molding company,
agreed to invest in the product and produce the official tooling. The
College Scholarship Award
product was originally called “Telecran,” based on the recent availability of
TV sets in France.
• 1960: Cassangnes collaborated with Jerry Burger of the Ohio Art Co. to
perfect the system still incorporated into the Etch A Sketch today. They
shipped more than 600,000 units in the spring, and it was the number one
Christmas toy that year.
• 1998: Etch A Sketch was added to The Strong’s National Toy Hall of
Fame.
• 2011: Time Magazine named the Etch A Sketch in its “All-Time 100
Greatest Toys” list.
• 2016: Spin Master, a global children’s entertainment company, acquired
the Etch A Sketch brand from the Ohio Art Co. That same year, Spin
Master achieved a Guinness World Record title for the most amount of
people drawing on an Etch A Sketch globally at the same time.
• 2020: To-date, 175 million Etch A Sketches have been sold in multiple
variations, styles and colors. To shake things up, Etch A Sketch joined
forces earlier this year with other iconic brands and names for a series of
limited edition variations of the toy, including MONOPOLY, NASA-inspired,
Rubik’s and Stan Lee editions. To mark the milestone anniversary, Spin

Someone just had a birthday! Yes, America, that’s who. And while she
ain’t perfect, she’s worth celebrating and fighting for — and even dying for.
Movies have always been a lens through which we examine our own
values. Here are some of the patriotic movies worth a second look this
month, from the Revolutionary War and Civil War to the Cold War and the
Gender War — and a couple of American gems to round it out. Happy
viewing, my fellow Americans!

“The Patriot” (2000) Mel Gibson and director Roland Emmerich made a
blockbuster out of the Revolutionary War, with Gibson playing a widowed
father of seven who is drawn into the militia to fight against the Redcoats “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) From the opening sequence taking Omaha
led by a particularly nasty Dragoon (played by expert villain Jason Isaacs). Beach, to the sniper fire faced at every turn, Capt. Miller (Tom Hanks) leads
a squad of soldiers across France through questionable territory looking for
the last of four brothers to bring him home alive. The first 24 minutes are
gut-wrenching and visceral.

“Rocky IV” (1985) Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) always was a shining
example of American values: hard work, loyalty, heart. But “Rocky IV” pits
the Italian Stallion against one Ivan Drago, a Soviet supervillain and hard-
driven machine of a boxer. But with those red, white and blue trunks, our
boy is up to the task.

“G.I. Jane” (1997) In a story from real life, Demi Moore stars as military
pioneer Jane Parkhurst, the first woman to undergo training at the U.S.
Navy Special Warfare Group. Tough as nails and with an iron will, Jane
faces discrimination and harassment as she earns the respect of her peers.

“National Treasure” (2004) An unimaginable treasure is tended by

illuminati and hidden by the Founding Fathers, locatable only through an
intricate and elaborate system of maps and clues, some hidden on and in
the very fabric of our nation. Nicolas Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates,
a third-generation treasure hunter who is all-in on finding it.
“Glory” (1989) The story of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts
Volunteer Infantry, an all-Black unit that fought for the Union in the Civil “Independence Day” (1996) An egotistical pilot (Will Smith) and a tree-

Are you wondering how to fix your credit? No one
can legally remove negative information from your
credit report if it’s accurate and current. But there are
steps you can take to fix errors and improve your credit.
Here’s what you need to know about how to fix your credit.
Your credit report has information about:
lWhether you pay your bills on time.
A match made for your wallet.
lWhat loans and credit cards you have, and what you owe on them?
lWhether you’ve been sued or arrested or have filed for bankruptcy.

The more positive information you have in your credit report, the
better your credit will be.
If there are negative items on your credit report, the Credit Bureaus
sell the information in your credit report to creditors, insurers,
employers, and other businesses that use it to make decisions about
you. If there’s a lot of negative information in your report, you could

also could be turned down for a job, insurance, or some services.
Most negative information will stay on your report for seven years,
and bankruptcy information will stay on for ten years. Unpaid
judgments against you will stay on your report for seven years or until
the statute of limitations runs out, whichever is longer.
There are exceptions. In certain situations — like when you seek a job

Without skipping a beat, the staff continued their projects remotely
with students and even hosted an End of Year Performance with the
theme “Time Travel” on June 24th.
Boogie Back to the 70s
Each grade was given a decade to research and gather information
about the historical events, arts, and trends from that time frame. The
kindergarten and first grade classes were deemed the Sunflowers, and
they studied the 1970s. They learned how to dance the hustle and other
cool moves and listened to musical hits from that era, such as Earth,
Wind, & Fire. During their End of the Year film, their instructor shared
videos and photos of the children’s activities in the classroom before the
pandemic along with the online classes.
Cut Loose, For An 80s Footloose
The third and fourth graders delved into the 1980s, during which time
they discovered the era’s big fads (such as yo-yos, the Rubik’s Cube, and
Legos!) They also learned that before songs were downloaded from iTunes
or streamed, people would use boom boxes and Walkman cassette
players.
One instructor asked the children to create a cardboard Walkman and The kindergarten and first graders boogied back to the 1970s,

David Bowie, Michael Jackson, LL Cool J, and Madonna. The students
also created vinyl albums using construction paper and paper plates!

Rock into the 90s
The fifth graders entered the 1990s, where they discovered numerous
cartoons and the booming comic book culture. The class participated in
a virtual comic book workshop, creating various drawing blocks, and how
to weave their own stories visually and contextually. According to their
instructor LaShonda, “The goal is to give students the tools and
knowledge they need to develop their own stories to express themselves,
and vent about the world around them.”
Their next project investigated popular 1990s cartoons, such as the
creation of Pokémon, Hey Arnold, Johnny Bravo, and various anime
(Japanese cartoons) series. “The purpose of the 90s cartoon characters
was for the children to learn about television shows from that era,” said
Group Leader, LaShonda. She asked the children to illustrate their
favorite cartoon characters now. A few shared images of Sponge Bob,
Avatar, and some even drew 90s classics like Johnny Bravo and
Arnold.
Hop into the Millennial Zone
Students in second grade showcased their artistry, reading
and comprehension skills, as well as their ability to participate
in the performing arts. They were assigned the 2000s, also
known as the Millennial era. With the artistic direction from
Group Leader Rhamsys Holoman, the children crafted a short
story entitled, A Tale Through Time.
The story follows two children who discover that a necklace is
actually a time traveling device. The protagonists, Ravi and Kai
accidently take a trip back to New York City during the early
2000s. Through beautiful drawings, the students read out loud
the adventure as viewers followed the turning pages. Their
ability to act the scenes, grasp the storyline (which they
created), truly showcased their reading comprehension, writing
skills and critical thinking abilities.
On June 24th, students and their families watched their final
performance showcasing each of their time traveling adventures
with the Spring Creek After School Program’s staff. Many of the
parents were eternally grateful for the program, writing, “I

Taking on Lung Cancer is Worth the Fight

(BPT) - You have cancer. Three small words that impact a person in a
very big way. For advanced lung cancer patients, the emotional response
to a diagnosis can be especially complex as lung cancer is the leading
cause of cancer-related deaths - each year, more people in the U.S. die of
lung cancer than any other type of cancer. For those newly diagnosed with
lung cancer, feelings of hopelessness and defeat can paralyze their
decision-making and may contribute to their hesitancy to seek treatment.
That’s why Merck has teamed up with GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer
on a new campaign, Worth the Fight: Taking on Lung Cancer, to help
empower people with advanced lung cancer and their loved ones to take
an active role in their cancer care and talk to their healthcare team to
understand treatment options that might be right for them.
This campaign is based on findings from a recent survey of over 500 U.S.
patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers to better understand the
mindset and challenges people impacted by advanced lung cancer face
around the time of diagnosis. Despite incredible progress made against
lung cancer over the past few decades, the survey revealed that most
people diagnosed with advanced lung cancer still struggle with navigating
their disease. The survey also revealed a need for more effective
communications between a patient, their caregiver, and healthcare team
and guidance around identifying helpful resources at diagnosis to help
patients determine next steps, including whether they and their loved ones
think it’s worth the fight to take on lung cancer.
In fact, when first diagnosed, most patients (57%) think nothing can be
done to treat their disease. Patients may feel scared (56%), have trouble
making sense of what their doctor says (76%) or feel overwhelmed (41%).
Upon learning of their diagnosis, 72% of patients believe they may have
brought the disease on themselves. While many believe smoking is the sole
cause of lung cancer, nearly anyone can be diagnosed with this life-
threatening disease. The unspoken implication that a person is
responsible for bringing lung cancer upon himself or herself can prompt
feelings of hurt and shame. Stigma can cause people to avoid seeking
treatment and is linked to disease-related distress and poor health
outcomes, the American Lung Association warns.
After Jodi Parker was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in 2013, her
doctors wanted her to start treatment immediately, but she wasn’t
convinced.
For Parker, it came down to protecting the time she had left.
“I’d planned on living out the rest of my life the best way I could and
making the most out of the time I had left. Fortunately, a well-timed call
from a good friend persuaded me that I needed to reconsider. Seven years,
one wedding and three grandchildren later, my cancer has returned. But
it’s never been clearer that it’s worth the fight.”
A treatment decision should be based on an informed discussion
between a patient, their caregivers and healthcare team. But oftentimes
patients are not sure how to weigh the risks and benefits of various
treatment options, even after speaking with their oncologist. When first
diagnosed, 79% of patients said their doctor clearly explained the value of
being treated for advanced lung cancer, but more than half (56%) of
patients doubted treatment would make a difference in their outcome. In
addition, more than a third of patients (33%) and caregivers (39%) said
they did not know enough about the disease to make informed decisions.
These factors may lead patients to leave the ultimate treatment decision
up to their healthcare providers.
“Lung cancer is most often diagnosed at an advanced stage when the
prognosis is poor, making it critically important for patients and their loved
ones to have an open and honest conversation about what treatment
options might be right for them at the time of diagnosis,” said Dr. Jacob
Sands, thoracic medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Worth the Fight: Taking on Lung Cancer is designed to help people like
Parker with advanced lung cancer take an active role in getting the care
they need.
“I know now that an advanced lung cancer diagnosis does not have to
mean giving up. Ask your oncologist questions. Learn as much as you can.
Take control of your care,” said Parker.
Visit www.fightlungcancer.com to download a discussion guide to help
you and your loved ones have an informed conversation with your doctor
about treatment options and additional support resources.
