Spring Creek Senior Partners Host Pop Up Vaccine Site

Each person patiently waited for their turn to receive the vaccine.

SCSP Staff members were on hand to assist people coming in for the
vaccine.

On March 11th, 12th and 13th,
Spring Creek Senior Partners
(SCSP) partnered with the Depart-
ment for the Aging (DFTA) to have a
pop-up vaccination site at the
Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC) to vac-
cinate SCSP seniors. This initiative
came from DFTA to make it easier
for the seniors to get vaccinated
without having to travel too far.
The SCSP staff members reached
out to seniors to inquire if they
would like to make an appointment
for the vaccine at the BSC.
Ambulnz, the healthcare provider
administered 208 doses of the
Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The
Johnson & Johnson vaccine is only
one dose and differs from the Pfizer
and Moderna vaccines because
they require two doses to be
completely vaccinated.

women about how they’re staying

the findings, 51% said wearing
makeup and changing up their
looks turned out to be a small way
to help them escape the stress of

in quarantine and staying home
doesn’t necessarily mean makeup
falls by the wayside. When it’s
time to make an appearance, say,
right before a video meeting, many
found a reason to pick up their
makeup looks. During our time in,
mascara, eyeliner and foundation
were the top three products re-
spondents found they couldn’t live
without - especially when they
cosmetics, while just over half
(51%) say that using makeup to
change up their appearance -
perhaps to compensate for the face
-covering - lets them feel a sense of
control and comfort during a
stressful time.

“Beware the Ides of March,” or so says the soothsayer to Julius Caesar. The
mid-March date was known in ancient Rome as a time for settling debts,
and in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, it’s a clear warning of the deadly
coming events for Caesar — a knifing courtesy of his friends in the Senate.
Which is why it makes me think of all the great movies featuring assassins.
Here are eight — some funny, some cult favorites, but every one guaranteed
to slay.
Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is dispatched to retrieve the money — by any
means necessary.
“The Day of the Jackal:” The 1973 classic follows a paramilitary group’s
intent to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle. They eventually
resort to professional assistance in the form of The Jackal, a hit man of
infamy, who settles down to business as his identity is slowly uncovered
by a Paris detective.
“Collateral:” Jamie Foxx plays a cab driver who takes one last high-dollar
fare: a man (Tom Cruise) who offers him $600 to make a series of stops.
Catch is, the fare is a hit man wiping out witness after witness.

“Point of No Return:” A robbery perpetrated by a strung-out junkie goes

wrong and she’s given a last-ditch second chance: instead of a death
sentence, train to be an elite assassin under the control of the government.

and chased by a rival killer (Dan Ackroyd).

“In the Line of Fire:” A cat and mouse featuring Secret Service agent
Frank Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and rogue CIA assassin “Booth” (John
Malkovich). Horrigan is the last living agent who served on Kennedy’s detail
in Dallas, and Booth taunts Horrigan with this fact all while threatening to
assassinate the current president.

“The Accountant:” An autistic young boy with a dysfunctional family and
extraordinary math abilities (Ben Affleck) becomes a forensic accountant by
day and cold-blooded killer by night. Dual story lines trace his history with
an FBI agent and his current assignment uncovering accounting
shenanigans at a medical prothesis company.
“No Country for Old Men:” The Coen Brothers tackle the neo-crime
Western genre when a Texas hunter (Josh Brolin) claims the remains of a
desert drug deal gone awry. No crime is secret, and soon hitman Anton

Learning is fun at SELC

The Starrett Early Learning Center (SELC) offers

educational instruction for three, and four-year-old
children. Last year due to COVID-19, each of the classes
worked with their teachers remotely through Class Dojo, a
free online educational platform designed to facilitate
communication between teachers and families. This school
year, SELC teachers were able to host hybrid learning,
allowing the students to participate in both the digital
platform to share classroom activities from home via
videos, photos, and journal entries or safely join in-person
learning.
“Since September 2020, Starrett Early Learning Center
has been able to maintain a safe, nurturing and thriving
3K and 4K program, inclusive of five days of full in-person
instruction with the option of families to choose five days
of remote learning. We have learned how to take the bitter
lemons of this pandemic and produce a refreshing
lemonade beverage,” SELC Director, Tammy Moore said.
Parents of SELC students were able to choose how they
wanted their children to learn. They could enroll in blended
lessons, virtual only classes, or the traditional in-person
experience. No matter the option, SELC staff was ready
with fun educational activities.
“Some of our remote families have found it hard to
facilitate the challenges of virtual learning. Yet the majority
of our remote families eagerly could not wait for the time of the day when Reading is fun at the Starrett Early Learning Center.

Whether it’s learning in-person or at home, SELC teachers create an
environment that fosters curiosity, artistry, and the fundamentals of
education. Learning how to communicate with young children virtually
was a difficult task, but Moore proudly shares that she and her staff
evaluated their methodology of teaching and customized their lessons to
use the digital tools as an advantage to motivate students.
To maintain a vast and fun learning experience, Moore instills various
weekly and monthly themes. Last month, the children participated in
Read Across America, where they read a wide array of books such as “Give
a Mouse a Cookie,” “Tiara’s hat parade, “Charlotte’s Web,” and more. In
addition to reading and comprehension, the children tried their hand at
baking cookies, which paired perfectly with their book, “If You Give a
Mouse a Cookie.”
In honor of the book “Wacky Wednesday,” the children wore silly and
strange outfits to play along as they discovered all of the wacky things the
protagonist discovered.

Dear EarthTalk: How does
climate modeling work? What is
the state-of-the-art in the field
these days, and what do these
most recent models tell us
about our future?

Climate models are 3D figures of
the Earth’s surface that demon-
strate the cycling of energy and
materials through the atmos-
phere, oceans and land. They
compile geography, physics, che-
mistry and biology to analyze
historical data and predict future
global conditions. Ultimately,
these models allow researchers
and the public to explore Earth’s
systems, climate change and the
impacts of human activity on the
planet.
The Coupled Model Inter-com-
parison Projects (CMIP), con-
ducted by the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
are some of the most detailed and
expansive climate models to date.
They show that the warming
predicted from this century may
be 0.4 degrees C greater than
what was deduced from the CMIP5
in 2013. This may not sound sig-
nificant, but it takes an immense
amount of heat and, in this case,

habits. He stresses the importance
of consuming food that is jam-
packed with nutrients, so that their
bodies can grow and become
stronger. For their latest cooking
lesson, Legros and Roytman
showed the class how to make the
perfect salad.
Making the perfect salad is all
about pairing your vegetables wise-
ly. Roytman has grown a wide array
trapped greenhouse gases to
warm the atmosphere, oceans and
land that much. In the 1700s, it
only took a 1-2 degree drop in
global temperature to plunge the
Earth into the Little Ice Age.
The CMIPs have also been pro-
ven to be very accurate. Fourteen
of the 17 models done between
1970 and 2007 made similar
projections of temperature change
through the next decade as found
by UC Berkeley researchers. These
findings have bolstered the sup-
port for and confidence in the use
of climate models.
Climate models may be por-
trayed as alarmist or extreme by
some skeptics, but they actually
tend to be more conservative with
their predictions since a net
positive feedback—that is, an
overloading of the system with
greenhouse gases—skews toward
a stronger climate response. One
example is the recorded sea level
rise from satellite data collected
from 1993 to 2008. CMIP3 models
predicted just 1.9 millimeters of
sea level rise while the data col-
lected in the following years
showed 3.4 millimeters of sea level
rise. CMIP models also under-
estimated sea ice melt-out rates.
Between 2007 and 2009, the
amount of sea ice that melted was
40 percent greater than the aver-
age predicted by CMIP4 models.
One aspect of the new CMIP6
models that will work toward
addressing underestimations are
their higher climate sensitivity in
comparison to past assessments.
Climate sensitivity is the amount
of long-term warming expected
of vegetables and herbs within the
Spring Creek Recreational Fund’s
(SCRF) Urban Garden Classroom
(UGC). Throughout her tenure at
the UGC, she has harvested fresh
crops that would impress any salad
connoisseur, including ingredients
such as kale, zucchini, zucchini
blossoms, Nasturtium, Callaloo,
Okra, Collard Greens, Malabar
Spinach, beets, snap peas, toma-
toes, cucumbers, lavender, straw-
berries, basil, dill, parsley, spicy
oregano, and lemon grass.
Prior to making their scrump-
tious salad, Sensei Legros asked the
judokas and their parents to boil
and then bake a chicken. Chicken
salad is the perfect combination of
protein and antioxidants, as well as
a healthy dose of vitamin B.
The first step is always to wash
all the meat, fruits and vegetables
prior to cooking. Sensei Legros then
asked the class to rub lemon on the
chicken and then add spices,
marinating it with your hand. Some
of these spices include garlic,
turmeric, black pepper, Celtic Salt,
and Cayenne pepper. The next step
is to place the marinated chicken
into a pot with one cup of water and
let it boil for a half hour.
While the chicken boiled, Royt-
man showed the class how to
Julienne chop the vegetables. This
after a doubling of carbon emis-
sions that greatly affects the
model’s predictions. To eliminate
more of the uncertainty from past
models, scientists and mathe-
maticians are constantly evolving
climate models to improve their
accuracy.
Though it is undeniable that
models innately have uncer-
tainties and the Earth encom-
passes a collection of complex sys-
tems, climate models have proven
to be reliable predictors of climate
change trends. Whether or not
these most recent models will
continue in that vein can only be
determined over time, but climate
action is not something that can
wait any longer.

into thin strips. Together with their
parents, the children chopped
onions, cucumbers, and bell pep-
pers, and then mixed it together
with their salad (the children could
use kale, a spring mix with spinach,
arugula, or just plain iceberg
lettuce).
After the salad was prepared, the
next step was placing the chicken
into a glass pan that has been
lightly based in olive oil. Legros
showed the class how to place the
chicken in the oven with the tem-
perature at 350 to 450 degrees,
which was set to cook for about 35
minutes or until it was brown.
As they waited for their protein
portion of the meal to bake, the
class made their own salad dres-
sing. Legros showed the students
how to make an avocado dressing
using only a handful of ingredients.
Together they smashed small slices
of avocado with a fork, diced garlic
cloves, vinaigrette, and added a
smidge of water and lemon.
The lesson culminated with the
class ready to eat a nutritious din-
ner that was high in antioxidants,
vitamins and protein.

Passover or Pesach Facts
When Is Passover? Passover begins at Sundown on
March 27, 2021
Passover is the celebration of the freeing of the Jews
from Egyptian rule around 3000 years ago. At the time,
the Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians ruler
Pharaoh Ramses II. God instructed Moses to go to the Pharaoh
and ask for freedom for the Jews. According to the Bible, his plea of “Let
my People go” was ignored despite Moses’ warning of punishments by
God if the Israelites were not freed.
God then sent ten terrible plagues upon the people of Egypt. The
Pharaoh then conceded and freed the Jews who immediately fled Egypt.
They fled without taking time to bake their dough. They took the dough
and baked it into thin crackers in the hot dessert sun. These crackers
were called matzoh.
To commemorate the freeing of the Jews, matzoh is eaten in place of
bread during Passover.
Good Friday - A Christian Holy Day
When: April 2, 2021
On Good Friday, Jesus Christ died on the cross. He died for us. But
he only died in human form. He then arose from the dead on
Easter Sunday morning to show us that there is life after death
in heaven. Good Friday, also called “Dark Friday”, is a day of
solemn prayer and the final day of fasting for the long lenten
season.
Christ was nailed to the cross at noon. His death came at
three o’clock in the afternoon. During this time, Christians
should spend in prayer and silence.

Sunday is a time of fasting, sacrifice and prayer. It is the Christian way
of replicating in a small way what Christ sacrificed for us, both in his
fasting and his final death on the cross.
The word “Easter” comes for the Saxon pagan festival, honoring the
goddess “Easter” (also called Oestre). The goddess Easter’s symbol is the
rabbit.
Did You Know? Approximately 1.5 billion “Peeps” are sold for
Easter.
Easter also is celebrated with the Easter Bunny, colored eggs, jellybeans,
and lots of chocolate. He (or she, as we are never quite sure about this)
comes on Saturday night leading to Easter Sunday morning. He brings
lots of chocolates and other candies. That’s one meaning to Easter,
especially if you are a kid or a “Chocolaholic”.
There is a famous Easter game called the Easter Egg Hunt. Early
morning kids go outside to find the many colored Easter eggs that the
Easter bunny has hidden the night before. The Easter Egg Hunt was the
first game ever invented. It is said that the reason this tradition started
was because of the Easter Bunny dropped the eggs on the way to deliver
them and they hide themselves. That is how the Easter Egg Hunt was
supposedly invented.
Most of us will celebrate both parts of this spring holiday. Upon
awakening Easter Sunday morning, the children will hunt for the Easter
basket left by the Easter Bunny. Then the family will dress in their finest
new spring clothes, and go off to church to celebrate Christ’s
resurrection. From there, the holiday tradition varies. Some have
a big breakfast of brunch feast. Other family will have a big main
meal with baked ham being the most common meat. Brightly
colored hard-boiled eggs will also be popular. It is not a day for
high cholesterol diets. It is a day to feast as the long lenten season
is over and Christ has arisen.
Easter Lilies are a popular flower and sign of Easter. They are great as
gifts for mom or grandma, or to decorate your home or office. Garden
stores and floral shops force the blooms to peak as Easter arrives,
providing a splash of color to the early spring season. They are grown
from bulbs, and can be transplanted into your home garden after the
blooms have died off. Then, they will bloom in your flower garden every
spring!
Setting the date for Easter: The date for Easter changes every year. It
is the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox.

I am battling depression and
have a question about psilocybin.
I stopped taking Effexor for my
depression because I did not like
the side effects. I also tried SAM-
e, which had only a small effect.
So, for the past three months I
have been trying cognitive
behavioral therapy, using certain
tactics.
I’ve cut back my days of work
and avoid all news when not on
the job. I stringently avoid social
media. I don’t put myself into
situations that I know will upset
me. I am also limiting my alcohol
consumption. Lately I’ve been
reading about how microdosing
the psilocybe mushroom can
Signs That Poor Sleep May Be a More Significant Health Issue
(BPT) - Sleep is essential to
overall immunity and well-being,
so disruptive sleep can affect
personal health, family life and
work. When you don’t get optimal
sleep, it can hold you back from
feeling energized, productive and
healthy, not to mention lead to
more significant health issues.
Everyone experiences a bad
night of sleep every once in a
while. But a new survey of 1,000
American adults reveals that
stress over the past year is nega-
tively impacting quality of sleep for
half of Americans.
Results of the survey, con-
ducted by digital health leader
ResMed, indicate one in three
adults are sleeping less than they
did a year ago.
“This is an alarming trend and
another important consequence of
the COVID-19 pandemic,” said
Carlos M. Nunez, M.D., chief
medical officer at ResMed. “While
trouble sleeping can sometimes be
chalked up to stress or anxiety,

I would like to know your opin-
ion on the use of psilocybin for
depression. It seems to be gain-
ing traction, but my fear is that it
can bring on degrees of psy-
chosis.
Dr. Roach says: I found two stu-
dies on psilocybin, a naturally
occurring chemical in 200 or so
species of mushrooms, especially
those of the genus psilocybe. One
study from 2016 was in 29 people
with cancer, and anxiety and
depression: 60%-80% had “clini-
cally significant reductions in
depression or anxiety.”
Another study (also from 2016)
treated 12 patients with treatment-
resistant depression with two doses
of psilocybin, and their depression
scores were reduced by more than
half at five weeks. All 12 patients
had adverse effects, usually mild,
such as headache, nausea or con-
fusion. Two patients had paranoia.
All adverse effects lasted less than a
day.

But when is poor sleep more
than just a bad night or a result of
a stressful day?
One of the most common sleep
disorders is sleep apnea; 54 mi-
llion adults in the U.S. have sleep
apnea - but more than 80% don’t
know they have it.
Sleep apnea is a disorder in
which the muscles in the throat
relax to the point of collapse,
restricting airflow. This causes
breathing to become shallow and
eventually stop for 10 or more
seconds at a time, depriving the
body and brain of oxygen.
In other words, millions of
people are suffocating each night
while they sleep and have no idea.
Many people don’t realize that
sleep apnea not only impacts your
quality of sleep and prevents you
from getting proper rest, but can

would be gained once you have it.
She is completely healed and said
she has no health issues asso-
ciated with it.
Dr. Roach says: Lyme disease is
caused by the bacteria Borrelia
burgdorferi and is spread by the
deer tick. There are many mani-
festations of Lyme disease, includ-
ing rash, many nonspecific symp-
toms, and late symptoms such as
arthritis.

include constant tiredness, poor
concentration, morning head-
aches, depressed mood, night
sweats, weight gain, lack of en-
ergy, forgetfulness, sexual dys-
function and frequent nighttime
urination, among others.

and is usually a result of carditis,
which is heart inflammation. This
happens in about 1% of cases of
Lyme disease. There were nine
cases of fatal Lyme carditis reported
between 1985 and 2018.
People who are treated early for
Lyme disease, such as those get the
classic bull’s-eye rash, do not get
immunity to Lyme. However, people
who have had Lyme long enough to
develop arthritis do develop some
resistance to future episodes.
Unfortunately, we are still at least
several years away from a Lyme
vaccine.
I could find nothing to support a
significant risk of death from people
who get Lyme disease a second (or
subsequent) time, so I think you
can reassure your friend.

There are nine books, 10 stories in each one, copyright 1943 by John
Sherman Bragg. They’re in good condition. Do they have any value?
A: Howard R. Garis (1873-1962), a reporter and writer for the Newark
Evening News, began writing stories about a rabbit named Uncle Wiggily
Longears in January 1910. A new story was published in the newspaper
every day except Sunday until 1947, when Garis retired. He wrote more

than 15,000 stories for the newspaper. The stories were first published in
a book in 1913. Seventy-nine books of Uncle Wiggily stories were
published. Garis was a prolific writer and wrote stories for several other
series of books under pseudonyms. Uncle Wiggily books with 10 stories sell
for about $5 to $10 each. The price depends on condition and how early it
was published.
